  • Around Beauty Point - Tamar Valley

    3 janvier 2021, Australie ⋅ 🌧 17 °C

Visited Seahorse World.  Ok but expensive for what it was.  We did get to hold a seahorse though.

Then Platypus Place, just on the other side of the pier, which was great and worth the money. The echidna were super cute. (I will do another post with a little video after this too.)

Lunch in the van in the carpark, then on to Beaconsfield to see the mine.   Was interesting.  Especially the bit about the miners who survived the ANZAC Day disaster. I crawled through the tunnel and saw the space they had made which approximates the space in which the two miners were trapped. Freaking scary.

  • Grindelwald, Lavender, St Helen's

    4 janvier 2021, Australie ⋅ 🌧 13 °C

One of Suzie's friends told us about Grindelwald ...what we thought at the time was a Swiss bakery that apparently had awesome apple strudel.  It was only a 30 minute drive...so we thought a good spot for morning tea.

But it wasn't just a bakery...it was a mini Swiss village...with coffee shops a little store...putt putt....very very cute.  They didn't have apple strudel though...but Suzie had an amazing Dutch apple cake, and I had banana walnut bread.  Yum! Would love to come and stay in the village at a later time. (They have accommodation at the village.)

Then we went to Lavender House Perfumery.  They didn't have many flowers in their fields because they are in the process of renewing their plants which they do every 5 years.  (I was disappointed when I saw the lack of flowers here. One of the main reasons I wanted to come to Tasmsnia was to see the lavender fields in full bloom. Bucket list item.)

However the guy behind the counter was a chemist and made all the products they had himself.  He was very knowledgeable and was lovely to chat too.  I bought quite a few products and am thinking I will buy online again when they are gone, especially the hand serum which I think is going to do magical things for my dry hands.  Suzie got a really good photo of me in the fields here.

Then into the Bridestowe Lavender Farm.  After there not being many flowers in the fields at the perfumery I was a bit worried about if Bridestowe would be the same.  I didn't have to worry on that count.  Lavender as far as the eye could see.  Astounding.  We had a late lunch/afternoon tea.  Suzie had a chicken pie with tomato lavender chutney.  I had lavender scones with lavender blueberry jam and a caffeine free lavender latte.  Both so damn good... especially the latte.  And I had to have a chocolate lavender icecream on the way out.  Nom Nom Nom.  Bought some tasty lavender goodies to take home...if they don't get eaten by us in the meantime.

Then on to St Helens were we're camping tonight. It's been raining on and off today. Hoping it rains itself out overnight and the weather doesn't put a dampener on our east coast explorations.

We've been told that the east coast is better than the west coast. Considering we've completely enjoyed the west coast we're really looking forward to seeing what the east coast has to offer.

(Going to add a video to another post.)

It's raining and cold!! We are hoping to go to Binalong Bay today (southern area of the Bay of Fires) but it looks like we won't be able to see the beautiful turquoise waters that the area is famed for. Oh well, you can't help the weather!!En savoir plus

We have travelled so much today!!! This is our second last night with Europa and already I'm sad!!

This is a cute little seaside village and is also the gateway to Maria Island where you can catch the ferry to. There are some gorgeous early 19th century cottages and buildings here. The double storey boarding house was built prior to 1838.

We are approximately 90 mins from Hobart here 😀

  • Remarkable Cave, Tasman National Park

    7 janvier 2021, Australie ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

A beautiful sea cave with the shape of Tasmania silhouetted at the end of the tunnel. The cave is made of different types of sandstones and has two entrances. These have eroded along fractures made by ancient earthquakes.

Nik was agile enough to climb down a ladder which is meant for emergency exits from the cave when high tides come. Me, no way!! I'll won't get up again!! 😂😂😂😂

  • Tessellated Pavement, Tasman National Pa

    7 janvier 2021, Australie ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

Wow!!! This is amazing. The cracks in the rock are helped along by the tide. The tide comes in, saltwater penetrates the rock cracks and surface. The tide goes out, salt crystals from on and between the rock grains as water evaporates. Over time, the salt water crystals grow, pushing the rock grains apart.

The silt from the central and western part of Tasmania moved 290-265 million years ago, creating siltstone that can crack, making it suitable for the saltwater to crack the stone. A process that began 160-60 years million years ago.

  • Hobart

    7 janvier 2021, Australie ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

We did it!!! We did the Lap of Tasmania!! We are back where we started from in Hobart and I absolutely love it here!!! It's so chilled out and the people are friendly.

We are staying at Lenna of Hobart, which was built between 1876-1880 by Harriet and Alexander McGregor. The original mansion which houses the reception, the bar, function rooms, offices and the McGregor Lookout is connected to the rooms of the hotel by a walkway. It's just perfect!! We are in room 38, overlooking Princes Park and the River Derwent.

We went for a walk tonight along the docks to the Drunken Admiral, a restaurant where I had the seafood chowder I have been after this whole trip!! It was delicious!!

There are so many buildings built by convict labour or from that time. This is such a beautiful historical city. Tomorrow I'm going to the Cornelian Bay cemetary to see the final resting place of my four times great grandmother Mary Ann Amelia Singer, nee Crumb. I'm still looking for evidence of the final resting place of her husband, John McDonald Singer, my four times great grandfather.

  • Arthur Circus

    8 janvier 2021, Australie ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

We are in Battery Point, one of the oldest parts of Hobart, just down the road from our hotel, Lenna of Hobart.

Like Piccadilly Circus in London, Arthur Circus is a roundabout but this is the most beautiful one I have seen. This site was purchased in 1829 by Governor George Arthur.En savoir plus
