    Escadaria Selaron

    September 10, 2023 in Brazil ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

Selaron Stairs are as crazy as the man who made them, seemingly.

Selaron himself was a Chilean born painter and sculptor that travelled around to 50 countries by selling his art before finally found home in Rio.

He began painting the steps in the colours of the Brazilian flag, plus red for his love of Formula 1. Constantly running out of money, he would sell his paintings to fund his now obsession with renovating the steps. Gathering tiles from contruction sites and other waste areas around the city originally. Then as his work became more recognised, tiles begun to be donated from over 60 countries in the world.

He said "This crazy and unique dream will only end on the day of my death", and that was what happened when he was found dead on the steps in 2013. 215 steps measuring 125 metres (135 yards) long, which are covered in over 2000 tiles.

Featuring in Snoop Dogg's "Beautiful", as well as U2 also filming there. This is clearly a work of passion, and as busy as it looks, it was actually relatively quiet compared to the high season.
