Coast to Coast

Travelling from one side to the other, Brisbane to Perth, to explore this big beautiful country with our Colombian friend. Read more
  • Kata Tjuta

    February 13 in Australia ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

It was still cold and windy, which might have seemed appropriate for the Valley of the Winds walk. But we also had an 8-hour drive ahead of us. So instead, we went to look at and stand on the otherworldly rock at Walga Gorge. Then we said our goodbyes to Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park and were back on the road again.Read more

  • Australian Arid Land Botanic Gardens

    February 14 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

We go to a lot of botanic gardens, but I liked this one from the first time we went there. It is a garden that really highlights the plants that live in arid zones and need next to no water. Saying that, however, it seemed like the garden needed a little bit more water, because it was looking very dry and dead... Which is probably natural, but maybe not the best example.

The guys also had some native ingredient ice creams while I had a quandong thick shake.

  • Outback Discovery Centre

    February 14 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 30 °C

Trying to fill in the missing gaps in our knowledge now that we are leaving the Outback. Last time we were here it was super busy, but this time we got to play on all the devices like the Morse code tester. I might have been trying to get us to take our time here too; we did have a second lot of 5 hours in the car after this.Read more

  • Ceduna and 'The Lodge' AirBnB

    February 14 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

That was a long day of driving, 1000 km, and guess what? Another 4 AM start tomorrow for another 8 hours of driving. So we only had the energy for a little sightseeing in Port Augusta, visiting the pier and Lookout area to learn about the Eleni K ship and its fate. We had a quick run around to look at Ceduna, fueled up, and had Hungry Jack's for dinner. But the cool thing was our Airbnb, which was a converted Freemasons Lodge. It had some leftover memorabilia and ledges around the center floor. It was really handy that we had gone to the Freemasons Lodge HQ in Brisbane on their Open Day, where we learned about the process and how all the lodges were designed.Read more

  • The Pantry

    February 15 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 16 °C

Get it? Pan-Tree. I know how the people on this road feel, it makes you do crazy things.

  • Penong Windmill Museum

    February 15 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C

Where else would you find Australia's largest windmill? Queensland. But where would you find a copy of it? Well, here in Penong of course, with all the other shapes and sizes. Alex really liked this stop. I'm always surprised by the things that tickle his fancy.Read more

  • Nullabor Plain

    February 15 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

Finally made it to the beginning of the plain. Leading up to this, I said to Alex that there were a lot of trees for a place that is famous for not having trees... Then they all just disappeared.

  • Head of the Bight

    February 15 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

It would have been pretty amazing to be here with the Southern Right Whales going past with their calves... However, I still got a little sentimental looking at the huge cliffs at the start of the Bight. I never thought I'd have any reason to see them with my own eyes. Something you see all the time growing up in Australia but just through pictures, and here I was in person.Read more

  • Border Village

    February 15 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

Had to get a picture of True Blue Rooey, right? Probably didn't have to get pulled over by the WA Police with a friendly welcome to the state with a speeding fine, though.

  • Eucla

    February 15 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

The first stop was just across the border at Eucla. This was meant to be a visit to see the old Telegraph station and Jetty, but it was also where I learned that March flies love my legs. So while I got to enjoy the Telegraph station, I was chased away from the track down to the Jetty since I didn't have any DEET on.Read more

  • Wedgetail Inn "Hotel"

    February 15 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 35 °C

Cocklebiddy, right on Nuytsland Nature Reserve... Sorry, that made me laugh, but it was a very long drive.

This was the roadhouse that we were most worried about staying at, actually; it had terrible Google reviews. And after seeing how modern Eucla looked, we thought we might have made a mistake... But Eucla was three hours ago. Turns out it wasn't actually too horrible at all, and thankfully I managed to have a decent night's sleep.

The place gets its name for housing a couple of injured wedge-tailed eagles who can't be returned to the wild.

  • 90 Mile Straight

    February 16 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

The start of Australia's longest straight road. I got a little distracted because the Outback Jazz Man from Tambor QLD was there, so I got chatting to him instead of taking pictures.

  • Caiguna Blowhole

    February 16 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

After a tiresome 5 minutes on the straightest road, we stopped at the Caiguna Blowhole. This was eloquently described by Alex as "just a hole in the dirt" when we were trying to find it. There was no blowhole action today; I guess the wind wasn't in the right direction.Read more

  • Esperance

    February 16 in Australia ⋅ 🌬 20 °C

Oh, Esperance, this was the only part of the trip that we really needed to have beautiful weather, as this is the swimming part of our trip since Esperance has like 4 of the most beautiful beaches in the world. And being here for 3 days, you would think there is a good chance of that, but those clouds with the addition of wind... That's what is predicted for the next few days, then 34 and sunny the day we leave.

Let's have our fingers crossed; the water looks beautiful at Twilight Beach regardless.

  • Lucky Bay Beach

    February 17 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

Didn't end up getting in early enough to see the kangaroos. Need to probably camp in the park to get that privilege before people start driving their 4WDs onto the beach for no obvious reason. There was literally a car park within 15 meters of the beach, and people would just drive on and park at the walking entrance and then leave again... anyway, enough ranting.

Water colours were gorgeous, and a mix of the sun on the rocks was pretty. It was a little early to swim here, but we walked along the water's edge for a while on the white sand.
