  • Arriving at Hwange National Park

    November 19, 2019 in Zimbabwe ⋅ ⛅ 33 °C

On the way to Sable Springs in Hwange National Park, we visited the Painted Dog Centre where scientists work to protect wild dogs. They create wire works of art made from wire that poachers set snare traps in the area. We bought a wire elephant. We started our “game drives” right away & saw more of the big 5 among many other types of animals. All but the rhino amongst the big 5 live here.Read more

  • Hwange

    November 20, 2019 in Zimbabwe ⋅ ⛅ 29 °C

We started today with another exciting Game Drive. They seem to be getting better. We’re seeing lots of animals, many close to our truck. They believe that our vehicle is just another animal so they aren’t scared. The day ended with an infestation of flying termites. Ndaba told us we were lucky to see this, as they flew around the light, mated & lost their wings then died. The locals eat them, so the staff scooped many up & prepped them for us to try the next night!Read more

  • Hwange

    November 21, 2019 in Zimbabwe ⋅ ⛅ 30 °C

Today was the best day! A pair of lionesses walked right past our safari truck. We followed them to their 6 cubs. We got very close to a pair of male lions. Ndaba had the driver drive off the path to within 10 metres of these lions for excellent photo opps!Read more

  • On the road to Lake Kariba

    November 22, 2019 in Zimbabwe ⋅ ☁️ 30 °C

We reluctantly left Sable Springs on our way to Lake Kariba. On our way, unbeknownst to us, Ndaba has purchased a mango tree with a litre of water. We stopped along the side of the road, where he asked a very poor local family if we could stop & talk with them & take photos. In exchange, we planted the tree on their property. They were thrilled to get this tree, even though it’ll take at least 3 years to bear fruitRead more

  • Flight to Victoria Falls

    November 25, 2019 in Zimbabwe ⋅ ☀️ 34 °C

We’re flying to Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe today. This is where Ndaba & his family live. Unfortunately the water levels are very low, so the Falls aren’t nearly as impressive as they often are. This is the beginning of the rainy season, and they expect rain soon!Read more

  • Victoria Falls Lesedi School Visit

    November 26, 2019 in Zimbabwe ⋅ ☀️ 34 °C

The highlight today was our visit to a local school just outside of Victoria Falls. The Grand Circle Foundations has supported this school for many years. The kids are happy & healthy. They’re fed a hot lunch daily. We also stopped at a local homestead where we learned about daily life of locals.Read more

  • Kasane Park in Chobe

    November 30, 2019 in Botswana ⋅ ☀️ 32 °C

Our morning game drive was awesome. Our guides spotted some distressed mongeese & figured a predator was nearby. We waited & eventually this beautiful leopard appeared. We went on a boat trip and saw hippos in an out of the water. These ones were fighting for territory. The last video shows what our guide called a “dung shower” where a dominate male marks his territory!Read more

  • Tour of Capetown

    December 2, 2019 in South Africa ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

We started the day in line to go up on top of Table Mountain on a gondola. The views were spectacular. The gondola ride runs frequently & is very steep. The driver then took us around old Capetown where we saw some brightly coloured homes that Capetown is known for. The streets are quite steep in places, not quite like San Francisco though. In the PM we drove around the Townships of Capetown & Langa in particular, where we saw where many blacks still live. They remain segregated from Whites & Coloureds which are a mixture of different cultures. The blacks certainly were/are very much the poorest. We stopped by a nursery school where the teachers do the best they can with limited funding.Read more
