Cuenca and its surroundig area

On our last days in Cuenca we were enjoying to walk trough the cute old town and parks. Also we did a trip to two little mountain villages. Chordeleg is famous for its jewelries selling all kind of silver and gold stuff, while Sigsig is known for the production of the famous Panama Hats. We visited a association of Ecuadorian women who are making those hats from cutting the wheats until the final product.

Cuenca is definitely our favorite place at the Ecuadorian main land so far and we can highly recommend a stop here.
Since we found out that the popular mountain train “devils nose” is not operating, we changed our plans. We’re going to Riobamba next, for some hiking around the highest mountain in the country: Chimborazo!Читать далее

Hiking at Chimborazo Volcano

After Cuenca we went to Riobamba. The perfect basecamp for hiking tours to Chimborazo Volcano. It’s the closest point on earth to heaven, due to his location close to the equator and the ellipse form of the earth. If you’re measuring from the core of the earth, Chimborazo is even higher than Mount Everest.
The first two days we spent in Riobamba just hanging around because I was fighting with a little cold. Lucky for us on Monday when we went to Chimborazo we had the most perfect weather. Clear all day. By Car we drove to the Carrel Refugio a little cabin for those you want to climb the summit. It’s on 5.000 altitude. From there we startet our 15km hike. First to the next refugio and the Condor Cocha lagoon at 5.100m. The next stop was Templo Machay Cave before we went all the way down to Chimborazo lodge. The altitude was hard to handle, every step was super exhausting but totally worth it.
The landscape was absolut insane and besides wild Vicuñas (Part of the Llama Family) we met a Ecuadorian shepherd with his Alpacas.

Back in Riobamba we went immediately to bed after a pizza and a hot shower. 😅🏔Читать далее

Baños de Agua Santa

Baños is a perfect place for outdoor fans. White water rafting, hiking, canyoning or zip lining. You can find everything here. It’s located in a valley between green mountains, with lots of waterfalls and little canyons. You recognize at the first moments that everything is made for tourists which is sometimes a bit to much. Quilotoa Loop - 3 Day hike

The Quilotoa Loop is a popular track to a beautiful volcano lake 2 hours south of Quito. You can do this hike in different ways between a path just around the lagoon or several days trough little villages in the mountains to end and the crater.
We did a three day hike and stayed in two beautiful mountain hostels. In total we hiked 37km and 2.700m in altitude. Most of the time we were very lucky with the weather. On the last day we finally reached the view point for the lake with its amazing green/ blue color.Читать далее

Cotopaxi - Secret Garden Lodge

Two nights and three days we spent at the Secret Garden Lodge near Cotopaxi Volcano. An absolutely amazing place where you have a fantastic view of iconic Cotopaxi during the clear mornings.
We did two hikes, one to the close waterfalls where I took a bath in only 9 degrees cold mountain water and the second to the summit of Pasochoa at 4.200m altitude. One day we did a horseback riding tour trough the incredible landscapes of Cotopaxi Nationalpark.
Between the activities you can relax in the cosy common area of the lodge in front of a fire, feed the Llamas next to the Lodge or recover in the jacuzzi.Читать далее

Cuyabeno - Amazon Rainforest

Four days we spent at Tucan lodge in Cuyabeno Nationalpark which is part of the Amazon rain forest. The lodge was in the middle of nowhere. We had to take a bus from Quito for 10 hours and then an additional 2 hours boat ride. Being in the middle of this incredible ecosystem was just amazing. We saw the famous Amazon river dolphins, two anacondas, sloughs, 5 species of monkeys, tree boas, caimans, tarantulas and a lot more. With the canoe we went through the system of rivers and lagoons to see all kind of wildlife. One day we spent at a village of indigenous people.
A absolutely perfect end of our 10 weeks stay in this beautiful country. Now we’re moving to our next country: Peru! 🇵🇪Читать далее

Lima

Our first destination in Peru was the capital, Lima. During a free walking to we got to know the historic city center of lima with its impressive buildings. It was a lucky coincidence that we’re able to witness the change of the watchmen form the presidential palace.
We finally met our friend Carlos again which we first met during a diving trip at Cozumel island, Mexico a few months ago. We had some drinks in a nice rooftop bar and he showed us his favorite places for the most famous Peruvian dishes: Ceviche & Pisco sour.
We have to say we both didn’t expect that we’re going to like lima that much!Читать далее

Huacachina Oasis, Ica

Ica is located in a desert, ca. 300km south of Lima. Next to the city huge sand dunes letting you feel like you’re somewhere at the Arabic peninsula.
Right in between these dunes you can find the most iconic sight of Ica: the Oasis Huacachina.

We went there at late afternoon to catch the sunset. The place was full of people and we didn’t feel the magic we were expecting after seeing all the beautiful pictures. But the light of the sunset was still amazing.
We decided to go there again early the next morning and we didn’t regret it. Almost nobody was around so we enjoyed climbing on top of one of the dunes, taking pictures and flying the drone.Читать далее

Maybe the city in Latin America we liked the most. Beautiful architecture, great food and relaxing atmosphere. All this is Arequipa. We loved to walk around the little streets which reminded us at small Italian villages. A absolute Highlight.Читать далее

Colca Canyon

The second largest canyon in the world. Impressive landscapes, hot springs and a perfect spot for hiking. Additionally we were able to see the huge Andean Condor!
