Close encounter with a male western capercaillie (Metso) for the first time in my life.
It's a scary bird! Crazy territorial and aggressive to the extreme!

Thankfully this wasn't directly on my path and the route was going away from it, but still it emerged quickly from the woods and was approaching me aggressively. And it's not even their mating season!

Managed to hike fast away from it. And no, I didn't even think of taking a picture of it.Read more

First time snowshoeing for me. This was a guided group as I wanted some instructions and tips for snowshoes.

It was nice experience. Snowshoes enables you to completely forget trails and just go where you want outside the trails.Read more

First time trying skin based skis. These are more or less Finnish innovation and hard to come up with a proper English name, because even the Finnish name is strange, liukulumikenkä.

These are basically shorter skis designed to be used outside of premade ski tracks. Similar types are used in mountains and found with alpine ski name.

It was crazy weather trying these. The snow was hard as rock and these have no grip for sideway movement which makes downhills dangerous.

I will probably get the longest ones for next winter which are closer to skis and have better skiing abilities.Read more

Finally, enough snow and I got to try my new back country skis that I bought in the Autumn.

It was as nice as I anticipated. Too bad, next week it will be plus degrees again and probably rain. Bye bye snow.Read more
