European Van Trip 2022

Une aventure de 117 jours par Lucy & Chris En savoir plus
  • Horror Walk

    9 septembre 2022, Lettonie ⋅ 🌙 10 °C

We parked for the night in the middle of loads of different walks and things to see in the woods. By the time we were ready to go for a walk it was pitch black and so the walk to a cave became very spooky. Because we were in the middle of nature bar the information centre, it was completely pitch black so had to use a torch. Funny how different it all seems in the dark 🤣

The video is back by the van in the car park.

  • Bobsleigh Ride - Sigulda

    10 septembre 2022, Lettonie ⋅ ☀️ 15 °C

This is one of my longest standing bucket list items, a dream for as long as I can remember 😍 (I explain this partly to show that nothing was going to stop me from having a go)
We were able to go on a bobsleigh for a run, down the track in Sigulda, Latvia.

We arrived an hour early to avoid the queue, but Lennon decided to have an unusual time nap 😂 so eventually 90 mins later we joined the queue.

With only one bobsleigh going round and round (down the track then towed up quickly by a van to drop the passengers off and pick up the next lot) we were queuing for around 30 minutes behind a group of 8 middle aged - older Irish Men who appeared to be on a lads holiday... They were funny and friendly and Lennon was smiling and waving at them all the whole time we queued.

In the bobsleigh there was a pilot and 2-3 passengers... When we got the front, we asked (guessing he wouldn't be) if Lennon was able to ride, he said no, too small. So I said OK, just me then (assuming he would put me and Brace separately with other passengers)
He said flatly... "2 minimum" and just looked at me 😂
I explained I didn't really know what to do about that as we obviously had to look after Lennon... At which point the group of Irish men, some of who had returned from their ride and some still on, all came over and said "we'll look after the baby if you want! He'll be fine! We have a female with us 😂" (they had a Latvian tour guide who seemed to be working for them) so we looked at each other and just handed him over 🤣

He was happy for about 45 seconds then suddenly realised he was with a load of strangers and started SCREAMING! Like he never has in his life 🙈 we had our hair nets on by then, quickly shoved our helmets on and jumped in the bobsleigh and we were off 😅

The ride was everything I'd hoped and I was grinning ear to ear from top to bottom, some corners were so intense it took all your strength not to whack your head on the side but it was incredible. Top speeds of 85mph and in winter they go up to 115mph!

When we were towed back up to the drop off/collection point we could hear Lennon screaming before we even arrived 😭🙈 he hadn't stopped.

They were all happy enough though and after about 5 mins back with me Lenny was happy again 😅

  • Vilnius

    12 septembre 2022, Lituanie ⋅ ☁️ 12 °C

Capital of Lithuania, and a lovely end to the Baltics.

We have really enjoyed the entire Baltic region, it was much grander than we expected, and so much history and well preserved to see.

The people may not smile much 🤣 but they are a cool bunch who have kept their tribal and cultural roots well despite being taken over by various different powers, an underlying sense of so what we are just going to carry on preserved their language, songs and traditions that would have been otherwise lost over the years.

So just because they don't smile, doesn't mean they aren't happy laid back or friendly, they just 'don't smile to make themselves look nice' as in out of politeness, and only smile when they naturally smile ☺ Lennon made lots of friends so we can vouch for it 😂

  • My big fat Lithuanian night out

    12 septembre 2022, Lituanie ⋅ ☁️ 11 °C

Brace surprised us by taking us to Lokys - the oldest restaurant in Vilnius (the capital of Lithuania) to eat Zeppelins... A traditional Lithuanian food.

We also had a bottle of Lithuanian sparkling wine & Lithuanian beers.

Video one demonstrates exactly what eating in a nice restaurant with Lennon looks like 😅 and video 2 is a little later when the boys were drunk in a bar after the meal.... Lads lads lads 🍻

    15 septembre 2022, Pologne ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

🤣 🤣 🤣 Not sure how I've gone my whole life believing Kraków is the capital of Poland. I've even been to Kraków before 💁🏼‍♀️

So of course Brace believed me and we spent a lovely day in Warsaw, not realising we were in the capital city 😁 whoopsEn savoir plus

  • Wieliczka Salt Mine

    16 septembre 2022, Pologne ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

I went here when I was 16 and always tell people it's one of the coolest places I've ever been, so I was almost nervous to go back after bigging it up SO much to Brace incase it was a let down. But nope, even better than I remembered actually.

It's just an incredibly beautiful, impressive and interesting place. One of the first UNESCO world heritage sites, along with Kraków it's neighbouring city, interestingly Kraków was entirely funded by the salt mined from Wieliczka.

Initially owned by the crown it was very profitable, salt of course used to be currency, valuable especially due to its ability to preserve meat and food.

There are over 3000km of trails in the mine, many chapels and places of worship, minors would pray before beginning work and again at the end of the day to thank god for allowing them to see the light of day once more.

The most impressive and recognisable part of the mine is the huge church with the many chandeliers. The entire place (and it is huge and very intricately carved in so many ways) was actually carved from one single rock. Incredibly it was in fact done mainly by one man, single handedly!! He was just an ordinary miner who the boss recognised as being talented, so asked him to do some more decorative pieces which led to what you see in the pictures, when he finished his brother took over and then another 2 men. The brothers Dad was also a miner 😊

The chandeliers are also made of salt, and basically every carving and statue in all the photos is salt. The ones that look darker are around 97% purity (up to over 99%) the slight impurity gives it the darker colour, but when you shine a torch close on it you can see all the crystals and that it is indeed salt not rock!

Some of the old wonders down there have of course dissolved, nowadays they have a system to ensure the air is kept right, which actually just is keeping a lot of doors closed (as in you all walk into one section of corridor and then close the door behind you before entering the next) and air being extracted up to earth.

There are huge sections of liquid in the mines where boats used to transport the salt and various other reasons, but it isn't water, its saturated brine, meaning it doesn't moisten the air and damage the salt.

Well I could ramble on. But you could just go yourself 😊

  • Night Boat Tour

    17 septembre 2022, Pologne ⋅ ☁️ 11 °C

We were a few minutes late, so they kindly said it was no problem and put us on the next boat... Unbeknown to us it was the Polish tour 🤣 so we didn't understand a word. But funnily we met a scouse couple who also missed the English boat so we made some friends and just enjoyed the views 😂

Then later, Brace's wallet went missing and after many drinks we ended up having a big row about who lost Brace's wallet 😅... Not quite the romantic starlight cruise we planned 🤣

  • Morning trip to Kraków

    19 septembre 2022, Pologne ⋅ ☁️ 9 °C

So in the morning... After missing the boat and losing Brace's wallet... The wallet reappears, on the worktop. There are no photos from that day as we were hungover and lazy, but friends again we decided to go on one last venture into the old town so as to have spent some more time out of the van before leaving for Slovakia.

We came accross a big market and the lovely old lady who had a bakery gave Lennon a little present.

It was nice to be there early too, quieter. So after everything, we left Kraków on a high 🥳

  • Bratislava

    24 septembre 2022, Slovaquie ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

Lovely afternoon visit to Bratislava. Not built to be a capital, it is a lovely city, and not TOO touristy either. We did somehow manage to end up buying our most expensive drinks yet 😂 despite it being around £1.50 a drink here usually... They saw us coming for sure 🤣

The ice-cream man did spice up my ice-cream for free though after I'd complained I'd been boring and picked a boring flavour 💁🏼‍♀️😂 so swings and roundabouts

  • Zichyho Kastiel

    25 septembre 2022, Slovaquie ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C

Sadly in Slovakia, we just didn't plan properly and ended up driving past so many incredibly beautiful things only to realise once we'd done at the bike park and shopping centre we had beelined for... We had driven so far past all the incredible stuff we didn't really have time to go back.

We saw some magnificent castles, one built up on the top of a high cliff/rock like something from a film. Often as we were driving it was just rolling hills and mountains as far as the eye could see in every direction, like the road you were on was all that existed. It was stunning!

We decided we had to go to something cool before leaving, so decided to go to a spot on the Danube River, but got sidetracked by this abandoned castle, which also had its own park and playground... Then we needed the toilet so stopped for coffee in a church turned cafe, (where Lennon was again given a present) then we had to go to Hungary 💁🏼‍♀️🤣

  • Heroes Square & Széchenyi Thermal Bath

    26 septembre 2022, Hongrie ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

Heroes square is right at the edge of the park, near where we slept night one in Budapest. The yellow building is the most famous and popular thermal bath in Budapest, the few photos in it are just in the entrance as I didn't get to fully go in as Lennon wasn't allowed.
The very last photo is duplicated from the last footprint, that's because it's the other side of the yellow bath building.

  • Bus Tour of Budapest

    27 septembre 2022, Hongrie ⋅ 🌧 17 °C

While this wasn't the best bus tour ever (are they ever great?) it was definitely my most embarrassing.

Due to the torrential rain, they had a waterproof tent like cover over the bus, but it was just pooling with water which spilled a bit off each time we turned a corner, meaning everyone but us sat huddled in the middle of the bus to avoid getting splashed repeatedly.

I wanted to push the water off to make it so we could sit on the sides again but when I tried it was a huge downpour and made my seat wet so I left it.

Then we came to a stop and Brace said "this would be a good time to pour off the water, do it now"

Like a good little wife, I instantly and obediently sprang into action without a seconds thought, pushed up the tarps hard... Well it didn't go over the side, it parted 2 sections of the cover and the entire baths worth of cold water crashed down over Lennon, Brace and a total stranger lady (who took it remarkably well).

The entire bus crowd gasped and everyone was staring at me and looked horrified that I had just tried to drown my own son, who was sat there gasping and blinking the water out of his eyes, soaked through 🙈

Then Brace said "I was only joking! It was a joke because all the water would pour onto the new passengers getting on" (the hop on hop off bus)

Well that joke backfired 🙃 but no one dissolved and I stopped blushing after about an hour so all is well 😂
