    50 | West Coast | Hokitika

    🇬🇧 Today started off rainy, foggy, and swarming with sandflies. We evacuated camp without breakfast and headed down the road.

    Our first stop was Hokitika which is a small town on the West Coast. The main visitor attraction is Hokitika Gorge which is a river with unusually blue water. There was a swingbridge and some lovely views. However, but it was absolutely packed with visitors. We had some lunch on the rocks but were soon found by sandflies, so we returned back to our car and continued south.

    Rob wanted to look for some pretty rocks under a bridge, so we had a short stop. We also went for a swim at the local pool before heading down the road to our next campsite.

    🇩🇪 Unser Tag begann regnerisch, neblig und voller Stechmücken. Wir packten unser Zeug in aller Eile und machten uns ohne Frühstück auf den Weg.

    Unser erster Halt war Hokitika, eine kleine Stadt an der Westküste. Die Hauptattraktion für Besucher ist die Hokitika-Schlucht, ein Fluss mit ungewöhnlich blauem Wasser. Es gab eine Hängebrücke und einige schöne Ausblicke. Allerdings war es dort absolut voll mit Besuchern. Wir aßen auf den Felsen zu Mittag, wurden aber bald von den Mücken gefunden, also kehrten wir zu unserem Auto zurück und fuhren weiter nach Süden.

    Rob wollte unter irgendsoeiner Brücke nach ein paar schönen Steinen suchen, also legten wir noch einen Stopp ein. Und wir gingen auch noch im örtlichen Schwimmbad schwimmen, bevor wir uns auf den Weg zu unserem nächsten Campingplatz machten.    Leggi altro

    50 | West Coast | Macdonalds Campsite

    🇬🇧 We visited this campsite 12 years ago when there was no toilet and only a picnic bench. It now has two flushing toilets and is very popular with campers. No wonder as it's right next to the lake with beautiful views over Franz Josef glacier, and very little sandflies to ruin it.

    🇩🇪 Wir besuchten diesen Campingplatz vor 12 Jahren, als es noch keine Toilette und nur eine Picknickbank gab. Jetzt hat er zwei Toiletten mit Wasserspülung und ist bei Campern sehr beliebt. Kein Wunder, denn er liegt direkt neben dem See mit wunderschöner Aussicht auf den Franz-Josef-Gletscher und sehr wenigen Mücken, die den Blick verderben könnten.    Leggi altro

    51 | West Coast | Franz Josef Glacier

    🇬🇧 After a stunning starry night we woke up to a cold and clear morning. After breakfast we headed into town to visit Franz Josef Glacier. Unless you book an expensive helicopter tour, you can't really get close to the glacier, but you can look at it from two viewpoints and that's what we did.

    🇩🇪 Nach einer atemberaubenden sternenklaren Nacht wachten wir an einem kalten und klaren Morgen auf. Nach dem Frühstück machten wir uns auf den Weg in die Stadt, um den Franz-Josef-Gletscher zu besuchen. Wenn man keinen teuren Hubschrauberflug bucht, kann man nicht wirklich nah an den Gletscher herankommen, aber man kann ihn von zwei Aussichtspunkten aus betrachten, und das haben wir getan.     51 | West Coast | Lake Mapourika

    🇬🇧 After lunch today we headed out to Lake Mapourika where we went kayaking with our guide called Max. We went across the lake and into a little creek. On the far side of the lake is a Kiwi sanctuary and there were lots of birds in the area as we passed. It was very quiet and peaceful.

    Back at the campsite we went for a quick swim in the lake before dinner and bed.

    🇩🇪 Heute machten wir uns nach dem Mittagessen auf den Weg zum Lake Mapourika, wo wir mit unserem Guide Max Kajak fuhren. Wir fuhren über den See und einen kleinen Bach hinauf. Auf der anderen Seite des Sees befindet sich ein Kiwi-Schutzgebiet und als wir vorbeifuhren sahen wir viele Vögel. Es war sehr ruhig und friedlich.

    Zurück auf dem Campingplatz gingen wir vor dem Abendessen und Schlafengehen noch schnell im See schwimmen.    Leggi altro

    52 | West Coast | Alex Knob Track

    🇬🇧 We got up early this morning because we wanted to go on the Alex Knob Hike which is an 8-hour hike. We only wanted to walk to a viewpoint halfway up, so that's not the reason we got up early. The reason we got up early is because the car park for the walk is tiny and there was only one space left when we arrived there at 8am!

    Before we went up the hill we did a detour to Lake Wombat where we did some bird watching.

    The walk itself was nice and not too strenuous. It climbs steadily up the hillside through dense rainforest. Some parts were quite steep but mostly it was very manageable. At the first viewpoint we decided to walk to the second one which was another 30 minutes away. Although the clouds were hanging really low it was still an impressive view.

    🇩🇪 Wir sind heute Morgen früh aufgestanden, weil wir die Alex Knob-Wanderung machen wollten, eine 8-stündige Wanderung. Wir wollten nur zu einem Aussichtspunkt auf halber Höhe laufen, das ist also nicht der Grund, warum wir früh aufgestanden sind. Der Grund, warum wir früh aufgestanden sind, ist, dass der Parkplatz für die Wanderung winzig ist und nur noch ein Platz frei war, als wir um 8 Uhr dort ankamen!

    Bevor wir den Hügel hinaufgingen, machten wir einen Abstecher zum Lake Wombat, wo wir Vögel beobachteten.

    Die Wanderung selbst war schön und nicht zu anstrengend. Sie führt stetig durch dichten Regenwald den Hügel hinauf. Einige Abschnitte waren ziemlich steil, aber größtenteils war es sehr machbar. Am ersten Aussichtspunkt beschlossen wir, zum zweiten zu laufen, der weitere 30 Minuten entfernt war. Obwohl die Wolken sehr tief hingen, war die Aussicht trotzdem beeindruckend.    Leggi altro

    🇬🇧 We didn't have time to see both glaciers, so we decided to spend most of the day in Franz Josef and only stop at Fox Glacier for a quick picture. The clouds were hanging super low so we didn't miss much.

    🇬🇧 There isn't much in Haast but it's a good halfway stop between Franz Josef and Queenstown, our next destination.

    53 | Haast to Queenstown

    🇬🇧 Our intention this morning to get up early and drive straight to Queenstown. "Unfortunately" this is one of the most scenic drives in all of New Zealand and the views along the way were just too beautiful so the 3-hour drive took us closer to 5 hours. It was totally worth it.

    🇩🇪 Unser Vorsatz heute Morgen war es, früh aufzustehen und direkt nach Queenstown zu fahren. „Leider“ ist dies eine der landschaftlich schönsten Strecken in ganz Neuseeland und die Aussicht unterwegs war einfach zu schön, sodass die 3-stündige Fahrt fast 5 Stunden dauerte.     54 | Otago | Queenstown

    🇬🇧 This morning we explored Queenstown. It's a very touristy place and there's a lot of activities you can do, such as boat trips, paragliding, bungee jumping, speed boating, and the list goes on...

    We both agreed that we'd rather skip all of the touristy activities as we're more interested in visiting National Parks and hiking. So instead we spent the morning getting a nice breakfast, checking out the Saturday market, and enjoying the beautiful mountain views.

    🇩🇪 Heute Morgen haben wir Queenstown erkundet. Es ist ein sehr touristischer Ort und es gibt viele Aktivitäten, die man unternehmen kann, wie z.B Bootsfahrten, Paragliding, Bungeejumping, Schnellbootfahren und die Liste geht noch weiter …

    Wir waren uns einig, dass wir all die touristischen Aktivitäten lieber auslassen würden, da wir mehr daran interessiert sind, Nationalparks zu besuchen und zu wandern. Also verbrachten wir den Morgen stattdessen mit einem schönen Frühstück, schauten uns den Samstagsmarkt an und genossen die wunderschöne Aussicht auf die Berge.    Leggi altro

    🇬🇧 In the afternoon we went to visit Arrowtown, which is a historical gold rush town that has been preserved over the years and looks almost the same as it did 200 years ago. It's got very lovely old buildings and lots of shops, cafes, art galleries, etc. We walked up and down the high street and checked out the river Arrow nearby.

    🇩🇪 Am Nachmittag besuchten wir Arrowtown, eine historische Goldgräberstadt, die über die Jahre erhalten wurde und fast genauso aussieht wie vor 200 Jahren. Es gibt sehr schöne alte Gebäude und viele Geschäfte, Cafés und Kunstgalerien. Wir gingen die Hauptstraße auf und ab und sahen uns den nahe gelegenen Fluss Arrow an.    Leggi altro

    55 | Fiordland | Milford Road

    🇬🇧 Our journey today took us south from Queenstown into Fiordland National Park.

    We stopped in The Anau just long enough to have lunch and to walk through the Bird Sanctuary, which is free to visit. We saw three Takahe, which is a critically endangered species of bird, and even two chicks. Only 200 or so of them still live in the wild, so seeing them (even in captivity) was still quite special.

    We continued down Milford Road, which leads to Milford Sound, one of New Zealand's top tourist attractions. However, we only went about two thirds down the road to our campsite for the next few days. On the way there were lots of picnic spots and lookout points.

    🇩🇪 Unsere Route heute führte uns von Queenstown Richtung Süden in den Fiordland-Nationalpark.

    Wir machten in Te Anau Halt, um zu Mittag zu essen und durch das Vogelschutzgebiet zu spazieren, dessen Eintritt frei ist. Wir sahen drei Takahe, eine vom Aussterben bedrohte Vogelart, und sogar zwei Küken. Nur noch etwa 200 von ihnen leben in freier Wildbahn, daher war es etwas ganz Besonderes, sie (selbst in Gefangenschaft) zu sehen.

    Danach fuhren wir die Milford Road entlang, die zum Milford Sound führt, einer der beliebtesten Touristenattraktionen Neuseelands. Wir fuhren jedoch nur etwa zwei Drittel der Straße entlang bis zu unserem Campingplatz für die nächsten Tage. Unterwegs gab es viele Picknickplätze und Aussichtspunkte.    Leggi altro

    55 | Fiordland | Cascade Creek Campsite

    9 marzo, Nuova Zelanda ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C

    🇬🇧 This is a huge, DOC managed campsite an hour from Milford Sound. We arrived quite early so there weren't many other campers, but it steadily filled up all evening and there must have been over 100 campervans and tents all over the area by nightfall. The views are beautiful and the wildlife very tame. A whole family of Weka is roaming the camp, and a little New Zealand robin even kept us company while we set up our tent. We're still waiting to see if any Kea show up.

    🇩🇪 Dies ist ein riesiger, vom DOC verwalteter Campingplatz, eine Stunde von Milford Sound entfernt. Wir kamen recht früh an, daher waren noch nicht viele andere Camper da, aber im Laufe des Abends füllte sich der Platz stetig, und bei Einbruch der Dunkelheit dürften über 100 Wohnmobile und Zelte überall auf dem Gelände gestanden haben. Die Aussicht ist wunderschön und die Tierwelt sehr zahm. Eine ganze Weka-Familie streift durch den Campingplatz, und ein kleines neuseeländisches Rotkehlchen leistete uns sogar Gesellschaft, während wir unser Zelt aufbauten.     56 | Fiordland | Milford Sound

    🇬🇧 We left our campsite this morning after another cold and clear night and drove the last hour of the road to Milford Sound where we caught a cruise. It was drier than usual which was great for visibility but not so great as it means fewer waterfalls. Nonetheless it was very impressive, every angle was spectacular, and we took many pictures - plus we got free tea and biscuits. After our cruise we walked along the shore and took even more pictures.

    🇩🇪 Wir verließen heute Morgen nach einer weiteren kalten und klaren Nacht unseren Campingplatz und fuhren die letzte Stunde der Straße zum Milford Sound, wo wir eine Bootsfahrt machten. Es war trockener als sonst, was zwar gut für die Sicht war, aber nicht so gut, da es weniger Wasserfälle gab. Trotzdem war es sehr beeindruckend, jeder Winkel war spektakulär, und wir machten viele Fotos – und bekamen dazu kostenlosen Tee und Kekse. Nach unserer Bootsfahrt spazierten wir am Ufer entlang und machten noch mehr Fotos.    Leggi altro

    56 | Fiordland | Lake Marian

    🇬🇧 We spent longer than expected at Milford Sound and only got back at 4pm so we weren't sure whether we wanted to do this 3-hour hike. However we're both very glad we did as Lake Marian is stunning. The views help you forget that you had to climb uphill for almost 1.5 hours to get there. Rob even almost went for a swim but the water was very cold.

    🇩🇪 Wir verbrachten länger als geplant am Milford Sound und kamen erst um 16 Uhr zurück. Daher waren wir uns nicht sicher, ob wir diese dreistündige Wanderung machen wollten. Wir sind jedoch beide sehr froh, dass wir es getan haben, denn der Lake Marian ist atemberaubend. Die Aussicht lässt einen vergessen, dass man fast anderthalb Stunden bergauf klettern musste, um dorthin zu gelangen. Rob wäre fast schwimmen gegangen, aber das Wasser war sehr kalt.    Leggi altro

    57 | Fiordland | Lake Howden & Lake Gunn

    🇬🇧 We started our day in a slight drizzle but we had prepared and put a tarp over our tent to keep us dry. Our plan was to walk to Earland Falls, which is a 6 hour round trip. As we left the car park it was still a bit drizzly but we decided to go halfway and decide then whether to carry on. The weather progressively got worse into a full-blown rain storm. We arrived at Lake Howden and could barely see the water for the fog. Even after waiting in the shelter for a while the weather didn't ease up, and we decided to head back. As we arrived at the car we were both soaking wet and spent a while drying out and warming up.

    Later on in the afternoon it did clear up so we made up for what we missed by having a walk near Lake Gunn which is right next to our campsite. We even spotted a Yellowhead which is a rare New Zealand bird.

    🇩🇪 Wir begannen unseren Tag bei leichtem Nieselregen, aber wir hatten uns vorbereitet und eine Plane über unser Zelt gespannt, um trocken zu bleiben. Unser Plan war, zu den Earland Falls zu laufen, ein sechsstündiger Hin- und Rückweg. Als wir den Parkplatz verließen, nieselte es noch leicht, aber wir beschlossen, die Hälfte des Weges zu gehen und dann zu entscheiden, ob wir weitergehen. Das Wetter verschlechterte sich zunehmend und entwickelte sich zu einem ausgewachsenen Regensturm. Wir erreichten den Lake Howden und konnten das Wasser vor lauter Nebel kaum noch sehen. Selbst nachdem wir eine Weile in einer Hütte gewartet hatten, besserte sich das Wetter nicht, und wir beschlossen, umzukehren. Als wir am Auto ankamen, waren wir beide klatschnass und brauchten eine Weile, um zu trocknen und uns aufzuwärmen.

    Später am Nachmittag klarte es auf, und wir holten das Versäumte mit einem Spaziergang am Lake Gunn nach, der direkt neben unserem Campingplatz liegt. Wir entdeckten sogar einen Yellowhead, einen seltenen neuseeländischen Vogel.    Leggi altro

    58 | Milford Road to Riverton

    🇬🇧 Today has been full of animals. We woke up this morning to a mama weka and her weka-lings scavenging through the woods, and a falcon trying to attack another bird but being in turn chased away by a harrier (which took only 10 seconds in total but looked awesome).

    After 3 days without showers or flushing toilets we treated ourselves to a cooked breakfast in Te Anau. We then drove along the Waiau river and stopped at several viewpoints over the river which were featured in scenes of The Lord Of The Rings. We also did a short stop in Manapouri at Fraser Beach, but the weather was so chilly and windy that we didn't spend much time there.

    From there we followed the Waiau river further south and finally along the coast to Riverton, where we'll be for one week minding two Golden Retrievers. We did a quick pit stop at Monkey Island Beach where we spotted some dolphins and a random dog tried to send us on a quest.

    🇩🇪 Heute war ein tierreicher Tag. Heute Morgen wachten wir auf und sahen eine Weka-Mama mit ihren Weka-Babies, die durch den Wald streiften, und einen Falken, der versuchte, einen anderen Vogel anzugreifen, aber von einem anderen Raubvogel verjagt wurde (was insgesamt nur 10 Sekunden dauerte, aber fantastisch aussah).

    Nach drei Tagen ohne Duschen oder Toilettenspülung gönnten wir uns in Te Anau ein warmes Frühstück. Anschließend fuhren wir am Waiau River entlang und hielten an mehreren Aussichtspunkten über dem Fluss, die in Szenen aus „Der Herr der Ringe“ zu sehen waren. Wir machten auch einen kurzen Stopp in Manapouri am Fraser Beach, aber das Wetter war so kühl und windig, dass wir dort nicht viel Zeit verbrachten.

    Von dort folgten wir dem Waiau River weiter Richtung Süden und schließlich entlang der Küste nach Riverton, wo wir eine Woche lang auf zwei Golden Retriever aufpassen werden. Wir machten einen kurzen Boxenstopp am Monkey Island Beach, wo wir Delfine entdeckten und ein Hund aus dem Nirgendwo erschien und uns eine Sidequest geben wollte (wir lehnten dankend ab).     59 - 64 | Riverton with Beau & Finn

    🇬🇧 For the past week we were looking after a grumpy old man and an over-excited teenager, yet we couldn't have asked for better company. Amongst a lot of relaxing (and doing laundry, drying our tent, fixing some stuff, etc), we visited the nearest city Invercargill, learned about local history at the Riverton Museum, went surfing and sea kayaking, saw dolphins several times a day (and once went body boarding about 200m from a pod), collected a zen-garden's worth of pretty stones, and did a lot of sunrise and sunset walks on the beach. We'll be sad to leave but there's still so much to see.

    🇩🇪 Die letzte Woche haben wir uns um einen mürrischen alten Mann und einen aufgedrehten Teenager gekümmert, aber hätten uns keine bessere Gesellschaft wünschen können. Neben viel Entspannung (und Wäsche waschen, Zelt trocknen, ein paar Sachen reparieren usw.) besuchten wir die nächstgelegene Stadt Invercargill, lernten im Riverton Museum etwas über die lokale Geschichte, gingen surfen und Kajak fahren, sahen mehrmals täglich Delfine (und waren einmal etwa 200 m von einem Schwarm entfernt Bodyboarden), sammelten genug farbige Steine für einen Zen-Garten und machten viele Strandspaziergänge bei Sonnenaufgang und Sonnenuntergang. Wir werden traurig sein, wenn wir abreisen, aber es gibt noch so viel zu sehen.    Leggi altro

    64 | Riverton to Stewart Island

    🇬🇧 Today we said goodbye to Finn & Beau and travelled south. We did a quick pit stop in Invercargill to get some groceries, then drove on to Bluff, where the ferry to Stewart Island departs.

    Bluff itself is in a very sorry and run down state, and not many businesses were open. Nonetheless we did a quick stop at Stirling Point, which doesn't just have a good name but is also the "official" southern tip of mainland New Zealand (although it's not the southernmost point, just like Land's End in the UK).

    There was no vegetarian food anywhere in Bluff, so we had to delay lunch until we arrived in Oban. The ferry was quite a small boat and Rob got a bit sea sick in the choppy water. Luckily from the ferry port to our hostel was only a 10 minute walk.

    🇩🇪 Heute verabschiedeten wir uns von Finn und Beau und reisten Richtung Süden. Wir machten einen kurzen Zwischenstopp in Invercargill, um ein paar Lebensmittel einzukaufen, und fuhren dann weiter nach Bluff, wo die Fähre nach Stewart Island ablegt.

    Bluff selbst ist in einem sehr heruntergekommenen Zustand, und nur wenige Geschäfte hatten geöffnet. Trotzdem machten wir einen kurzen Stopp in Stirling Point, das nicht nur einen guten Namen hat, sondern auch die „offizielle“ Südspitze des neuseeländischen Festlands ist (obwohl es nicht der südlichste Punkt ist, genau wie Land’s End in Großbritannien).

    In Bluff gab es nirgendwo vegetarisches Essen, daher mussten wir das Mittagessen verschieben, bis wir in Oban ankamen. Die Fähre war recht klein, und Rob wurde in dem unruhigen Wasser etwas seekrank. Zum Glück waren es vom Fährhafen zu unserem Hostel nur 10 Minuten zu Fuß.    Leggi altro

    🇬🇧 Once we had arrived on Stewart Island and checked into our campsite, we had a short walk around through the woods and to several beautiful beaches. The weather cleared up after a big storm last night, and you could hear lots of different birds. We also went out later in the evening as Stewart Island is famous for star gazing die to its lack of light pollution. We saw a few stars to begin with, but the clouds came in after an hour or so and we called it a night.

    🇩🇪 Nachdem wir auf Stewart Island angekommen waren und auf unserem Campingplatz eingecheckt hatten, machten wir einen kurzen Spaziergang durch den Wald und zu mehreren wunderschönen Stränden. Nach einem heftigen Sturm letzte Nacht klarte das Wetter auf, und man konnte viele verschiedene Vögel hören. Wir gingen auch noch später am Abend hinaus, da Stewart Island aufgrund der geringen Lichtverschmutzung für die Sternenbeobachtung bekannt ist. Wir sahen zwar viele Sterne zu Anfang, aber nach etwa einer Stunde zogen Wolken auf, und wir beendeten den Abend.    Leggi altro

    🇬🇧 This morning we got up early to catch another boat, this time to Ulva Island, which is a predator-free bird sanctuary. We had 5 hours there in which I was hoping to see a rare New Zealand Saddleback. Just as we stepped off the water taxi, a tour guide (from another tour) said "Oh I can hear some Saddlebacks calling up the hill", and literally 3 minutes after arriving we saw a family with two juveniles flapping around the trees like you could see them every day. Mission accomplished... only 4 hours and 57 minutes to go! Luckily there was a lot more island to explore and a lot more birds to see.

    🇩🇪 Heute Morgen standen wir früh auf, um ein weiteres Boot zu nehmen, diesmal nach Ulva Island, einem raubtierfreien Vogelschutzgebiet. Wir hatten fünf Stunden dort, in denen ich hoffte, einen seltenen neuseeländischen Saddelback zu sehen. Gerade als wir aus dem Wassertaxi stiegen, sagte ein Reiseleiter (von einer anderen Tour): „Oh, ich höre ein paar Saddelbacks oben am Hügel rufen.“ Und buchstäblich drei Minuten nach unserer Ankunft sahen wir eine Familie mit zwei Jungvögeln, die in den Bäumen herumflatterten, als könnte man sie jeden Tag sehen. Mission erfüllt … nur noch 4 Stunden und 57 Minuten übrig! Zum Glück gab es noch viel mehr auf der Insel zu entdecken und viele weitere Vögel zu sehen.

    🇬🇧 Finally the time has come! We paid some really knowledgeable ladies to take us to see the kiwis. With a group of about 20, we trudged through the dark, hoping they would grace us with a glimpse of them. We were successful and saw two chicks and a young adult male. With a 5% survival rate into adulthood, seeing two chicks in the same night was very lucky. So despite the light drizzle the night was a success! (Unfortunately my phone camera was very bad so all I have are blurry photos).

    🇩🇪 Endlich ist es soweit! Wir haben ein paar wirklich sachkundige Damen dafür bezahlt, uns zu den Kiwis zu führen. Mit einer Gruppe von etwa 20 Leuten stapften wir durch die Dunkelheit und hofften, dass sie uns einen Blick auf sie gewähren würden. Wir hatten Erfolg und sahen zwei Küken und ein junges erwachsenes Männchen. Bei einer Überlebensrate von 5 % ins Erwachsenenalter war es großes Glück, zwei Küken in derselben Nacht zu sehen. Trotz des leichten Nieselregens war die Nacht also ein voller Erfolg! (Leider war meine Handykamera sehr schlecht, daher habe ich nur verschwommene Fotos.)    Leggi altro

    🇬🇧 Today has been a travel day. We took the ferry to Bluff and drove another 3.5 hours to Wanaka. On the way we stopped a couple of times to take pictures. We also did a short detour to the bridge where Rob did his first bungy jump 12 years ago.

    🇩🇪 Heute war Reisetag. Wir nahmen die Fähre nach Bluff und fuhren weitere 3,5 Stunden nach Wanaka. Unterwegs hielten wir mehrmals an, um Fotos zu machen. Wir machten auch einen kurzen Abstecher zur Brücke, wo Rob vor 12 Jahren seinen ersten Bungee-Sprung machte.    Leggi altro

    66 | Wanaka | Albert Town Campsite

    🇬🇧 This campsite is just 10 minutes outside of Wanaka, directly next to the Clutha River. It's the cheapest (paid-for) campsite we've stayed at so far, and it's by far the best value. $4 cheaper per person than a DOC campsite, and you get lots more space, flushing toilets, sinks, and even waste skips.

    🇩🇪 Dieser Campingplatz liegt nur 10 Minuten außerhalb von Wanaka, direkt am Clutha River. Es ist der günstigste (kostenpflichtige) Campingplatz, auf dem wir bisher übernachtet haben, und bietet mit Abstand das beste Preis-Leistungs-Verhältnis. Er ist 4 $ günstiger pro Person als ein DOC-Campingplatz und bietet deutlich mehr Platz, Spültoiletten, Waschbecken und sogar Abfallcontainer.    Leggi altro

    67 | Otago | Roys Peak

    🇬🇧 Another day another hike! Roy's Peak is a challenging hike, it's 3 hours uphill and there is no shade. Both of us have done this hike 12 years ago and it was just as exhausting as I remember.

    Back then we saw maybe 10 people all day. However, the hike has become a lot more popular due to social media. A lot of people were already hiking back down when we started our hike at 8.30am (most likely they went up to see the sunrise). We both counted around 300 people on our way up!

    We took lots of pictures at the lookout point and then walked the final 45 minutes to the peak. The views were just as amazing as 12 years ago and we saw quite a lot of animals from geckos to grasshoppers to different birds. We also saw a falcon hunting from a perch on top of a pole.

    There were a lot fewer people on our way down, and the afternoon was getting very hot! The last hour downhill was super sweaty and my knees were not happy. It was definitely worth it though and we even recreated several pictures from our first time!

    🇩🇪 Ein neuer Tag, eine neue Wanderung! Roy's Peak ist eine anspruchsvolle Wanderung. Es geht drei Stunden bergauf und es gibt keinen Schatten. Wir beide haben diese Wanderung vor 12 Jahren schon gemacht, und sie war genauso anstrengend, wie ich sie in Erinnerung habe.

    Damals sahen wir den ganzen Tag über vielleicht 10 Leute. Durch Social Media ist die Wanderung jedoch viel beliebter geworden. Viele waren schon auf dem Rückweg, als wir um 8:30 Uhr losgingen (wahrscheinlich waren sie hochgegangen, um den Sonnenaufgang zu sehen). Wir zählten beide rund 300 Leute auf dem Weg nach oben!

    Wir machten viele Fotos am Aussichtspunkt und wanderten dann die letzten 45 Minuten zum Gipfel. Die Aussicht war genauso atemberaubend wie vor 12 Jahren, und wir sahen viele Tiere, von Geckos über Heuschrecken bis hin zu verschiedenen Vögeln. Wir sahen sogar einen Falken, der von einem Hochsitz auf einer Stange aus jagte.

    Auf dem Abstieg waren viel weniger Leute, und der Nachmittag wurde sehr heiß! Die letzte Stunde bergab war super verschwitzt, und meine Knie machten mir zu schaffen. Es hat sich aber auf jeden Fall gelohnt und wir haben sogar mehrere Bilder von unserem ersten Mal nachgestellt!    Leggi altro
