    Grouse Grind

    Yesterday in Canada ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

Last full day in Vancouver. Weather was rainy as predicted. Kerry suggested we did the grind. We started off with breakfast at JAM. (My choice was disgusting) walked to sea bus then caught bus to Grouse. We did the grind, just over 3km long with 800m elevation gain. It took us an hour. Perfect weather for it. It was freezing at the top. We took the gondola down, then bus and seabus and walk back to Kerry’s apartment. We had lunch and then cleaned the bikes on the balcony , ready for Kerry to sell to some lucky new owners.Read more

  • The Whale

    September 1 in Canada ⋅ ☀️ 14 °C

On Monday, Kerry, Mark and I set off to ride the Strava art whale. Kerry has been wanting to do it for years. Mark was our chief map reader, which was quite tricky at times. We also had to do U-turns a few times as to stay on the art line. We were on hectic traffic roads and also quiet bike paths. Kerry said she rode in areas she has not gone to before. She pointed out the La Salle school to me. Ali was cheering for us when we crossed the bridge right outside his work. We came home had a shower and kerry took us through Gas Town with all the other tourists. We had a poke bowl for lunch and had a drink at the revolving restaurant having a 360 view of Vancouver. Another stunning day.Read more

  • Salt Island Springs

    August 28 in Canada ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

Kerry and Alistair took Friday off, so we packed , loaded bikes onto the car and drove to the free parking lot near Tewwasin Ferry. On the ferry we played the music game which was a lot of fun. We are becoming pros at leaving the ferry first. The island has some punchie climbs, which is hard work with a full bike. We went to the camp site first which was just outside Ganges on a hill! Then we did a little ride to see a bit of the island, which included St Mary’s lake. We went to town and bought supper, climbed the hill and back to camp. Had a lovely evening. Next morning we packed up early. Went back down to town to have breakfast , look at the market and bought lunch/supper. Went back to camp to repack the bikes. Then we headed out to Ruckle Park to the next camp site. On the way we stopped at a little bay to chill, make a sand castle and have lunch. The ride to the camp was full of stops looking at all the honesty box farm stores. We also stopped at a cheese farm. The new camp site was on the shore. Just so beautiful. We set up our tents and went for a little walk. I had a swim, the water was very “fresh” kerry and Ali had a friend who joined us for dinner. We had a lovely evening watching the moon rise. On Sunday we left early and had a super ride back to Ganges, where we had coffee and breakfast and caught the ferry home. A truly beautiful weekend.Read more

  • Thursday -Mnt Seymour and ballgame

    August 27 in Canada ⋅ 🌧 16 °C

Woke up to a dull overcast sky. Shnapps had made a route that went up the mountain, along north shore and home via Stanley Park. In beginning the weather was perfect for riding. When we started the climb I went into my slow steady mode. Shnapps was ahead but always just checking I was okay. The climb was 12km long and we climbed 1000m. It took me 1 and a half hours. The summit was covered in mist and heavier rain. We didn’t stop coz we didn’t want to get cold. After putting on a jacket we descended , it was freezing. We found a very welcoming coffee shop at the bottom to warm us up. We still did a fare bit of climbing on way home. When we got back to Kerry’s apartment, it poured down hard. At 6ish the blue sky returned and we caught an uber to the ballgame. Such an experience. The national anthems were sung. A little boy started the game by saying “play ball”. We bought a yard long hotdog and some beers much to amusement of people around us. The sushi race was won by wasabi. I sung “take me down to the ballgame “ with lots of enthusiasm. All in all a memorable day.Read more

  • Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday

Tuesday was a total chill day. Monday we rode to Port Moody and almost to Fort Langley. We had dinner arrangements with Will Shuter so cut 9km off our route. It was great to meet up with Will, Heidi, Hayden and Caitlyn. On Wednesday we did an airport ride, out on breakwater, dykes and through a cute place called Stevestons. You definitely get to see the city when you ride around it.Read more

  • Whistler

    August 21 in Canada ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

Kerry and Ali took us to Whistler for an amazing experience. This was a hiking weekend, plans were changed due to inclement weather. We caught a gondola up, then chairlift. We hiked amount snow! We had lunch overlooking the most awesome views, including glaciers. That evening we had beaver tails (fried pancakes) and delicious dinner at an Irish pub. We had a chilled time at rainbow lake. Kerry booked us in at the sports resort which was lovely. The next day we hiked up to Garaboldi lake, swimming in glacier fed water, just breath taking. We drove back, having pizzas at stop along the way, due to traffic going back along the bridge.

  • Seamour Forest and Deep Cove

    August 19 in Canada ⋅ ☀️ 14 °C

We followed advice from Kerry and Alistair and took the cycle route across Ironworkers Bridge (could be Steel!) and into the Seamour forests. Another bit of heaven right in Vancouver. We took the tar road up and then lesser traveled gravel road back. There were many signs telling us to be on the lookout for bears. So I made a noise so they disappeared before we got there. We rode onto Deep Cove which is a picturesque suburb with a lovely marina and cute villagie feel. We cycled homeward and had our “padkos” in an arbitrary park called Templeton. On the way home we went past shop to buy freeze dried food for our hike. At home Ali and Kerry prepared a delicious dinner for us. Shnapps and I went for a walk to find a refill for soda stream. Our route took us through drug central. Devastating to see what substance abuse can reduce a person to. (We never found a refill!)Read more

On Friday afternoon we set off following Ali and Kerry through traffic in Vancouver to the Horseshoe Bay ferry(epic, parts like Chapmen’s) to Nanaimo on Van Island, had dinner at a noodle take out , then another ferry to Gabriola Island. Campsite was about 10min cycle from ferry. We set up tents, then watched the sunset. The next day we cycled around the island and had a picnic lunch looking over the ocean. Slept on island again, then packed up, did a little loop and back home the same way we came. Cycling through hundreds of tourists. Vancouver is a very busy place.Read more

    August 14 in Canada ⋅ 🌙 18 °C

Kerry and Ali fetched us from the airport. It was so amazing to see them. They gave us this welcoming card , with iconic land marks and things to achieve while we’re here. Nothing has been ticked off yet. Anyway the next day they went to work. Shnapps and I made a route and stopped for coffee and bought a few things for the bikes. We then followed Shnapps’ route to The Fraser River, where we bought lunch and had a picnic on the banks. It was teaching cycle to learn the rules of road and how to follow cycle lanes. When we got back we showered and changed and walked to shop and picked up food for supper and breakfast. When K&A got back from work we cycled to habour for our picnic and just watch the sights.Read more

  • JAM and Granville Island

    August 14 in Canada ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

I woke up early so went for a walk using a map of Strava. Kerry took the Friday off. It was a rainy morning. We walked to JAM cafe where I ticked of a “Canadiano’ and Shnapps ordered the ‘Americano’ which is exactly the same. I ordered a pancake. Thank goodness the server (waiter) told me they were huge and came with 3, but I could order one. Which I did, I took home half of it! It was like a huge flapjack that covered a dinner plate. We then walked to the hop on/off ferry on the false creek and we went to Granville island(which is not an island) it’s a tourist trap with a lovely food market. Luckily we were full from breakfast. We hopped on ferry and kerry took us to where she works and showed us Alistair’s office.. we caught another ferry home and started to pack our bike.Read more
