Berchtesgaden day 1

Today it was time for the penguins to change nest sites, so they had an early breakfast and caught the bus to Josefiau, with seconds to spare. They changed busses and got to Berchtesgaden just after 10am.

They left their luggage at the hotel and took a very old fashioned red cable car up towards the Eagle’s Nest, Hitler’s summer retreat and base for many NS meetings completed in 1938.

It was a 3hr walk, zigzagging up the hill. There was a bronze lift for the last 25 metres up to the lookout and restaurant. They had lunch and a beer with amazing views!

Afterwards they walked up to a wooden cross with Edelweiss on it, and looked at the old photos of the war, before huddling into the lift.

They played an alphabet memory game in German to pass the time on the descent walk.

After the cable car, they paddled in the river then checked in at the hotel. They met a bit later for dinner, and walked up to a pizzeria in the old town, where they had to wait for an hour for their anchovies and salmon but it was well worth it!Read more
