    Munich with Blanca

    August 15, 2025 in Germany ⋅ ☀️ 30 °C

Met up with my friend Blanca, a fellow Stuttgart au pair from Sevilla in 2015-16, who is spending the summer in Munich. We went up the Alter Peter, walked around the city and caught up before I carried on to Zurich.Read more

  • Day 1 - Zurich to Meiringen

    August 16, 2025 in Switzerland ⋅ ⛅ 28 °C

Dad and I arrived on Friday at 7ish and checked into our chintzy Great Gatsby themed room. Then we headed into town for dinner and collected Cihan from the station at 12am (delays on the DB, hopefully the Swiss trains will live up to their reputation of being punctual!)

In the morning, after a quick supermarket breakfast we headed into town to check out a mountaineering bookshop, where dad reminisced with the owner about trad climbing in the 70s. Guides in hand, we checked out the James Joyce foundation where the manager gave us a brief tour and showed Cihan the German translation of Ulysses which was banned from further publication.

Today is the 59th annual swim in the Limmat river, but no time for us to float - it's on to Meiringen via Luzerne now.

  • Day 1.2 - Meiringen

    August 16, 2025 in Switzerland ⋅ ☁️ 26 °C

Arrived in Meiringen just after four via a panoramic train journey with change in Luzerne. After checking in to the hostel, straight up to the Reichenbach falls (where Sherlock Holmes famously killed Moriarty) via a funicular. Käsespätzli x3 and a beer at the top and then walked down to reach the hostel just before the thunder storm. What a first day!Read more

  • Day 2 - Grindelwald - Rosenlaui

    August 17, 2025 in Switzerland ⋅ ⛅ 12 °C

An epic walk which started with a train ride to Grindelwald via Luzerne. From there, we went up to the Bergstation First and started our walk.

Dad left us at lunch to bag Schwarzhorn and Wildgärst, Cihan and I carried on around the Romantikweg, passing a goat herder (we all agreed on the distinct Goat's cheese aroma) down to the valley where Goethe once walked (1779). It was beautiful, and the road now running through it was a blessing, as we'd missed the last bus back to Meiringen by two hours, but a friendly Swiss man travelling that way by car took us down the 9km, which saved us a long walk!

Falafel and chips for dinner and home to the hostel just after lights out!

  • Day 3 - Bidmi-Mägisalp

    August 18, 2025 in Switzerland ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

After having a chilled breakfast (including the obligatory fight for coffee and milk with the staff of the hostel who withheld precious commodities as part of their policy) we set off to the cable car station. We agreed to get off at Bidmi so that Dave could do some summiteering (i.e. being a sommelier for mountains) while we looked round at the paths more suitable for the young. In the afternoon, we all united to go visit the Sherlock Holmes Museum (the Reichenbachfalls as a key location in one the stories) and learned more about the animals living in that area. We all finished the evening with a pizza and a rather depressing movie about a Portugese woman working in a warehouse in Edinburgh. (On Falling).

  • Day 4 - Engstenalp

    August 19, 2025 in Switzerland ⋅ ☀️ 15 °C

Cihan & I got minibus from Innertkirchen to Engstenalp (1800m) for a wonderful day of alpine lake swimming to the sounds of cowbells chiming, meanwhile dad was walking. Perfect weather before the rain and clouds!Read more

  • Day 6 - Gotthard Pass

    August 21, 2025 in Switzerland ⋅ 🌧 11 °C

Day trip up to the Gotthard Pass in mainly fog. Two great museums and a raclette at 2100m = yes, please! Fortress was very cold though, 6 degrees, and I (Zoe) was a bit scared of getting trapped in there.Read more

  • Day 7 - Stoos loop

    August 22, 2025 in Switzerland ⋅ ☁️ 11 °C

After waiting off the rain and checking out the 11th longest cave system in the world (Hölloch), we got the steepest bergbahn in the world up to Stoos (1300m), a car-free village, to do a 14km ridge walk, bagging Fronalpstock (1920m), Huser Stock (1904m), Rot Turm (1893m), Klingenstock (1935m).
It was fairly touristy, with a lot of people using the cable cars from Fronalpstock and Klingenstock. Two drones and a few influencers. Luckily, the clouds cleared and we got a few views down to the Vierwaldstättersee.

In the evening it was home to Altdorf for a meal at the Lehnhaus and Zoe and Cihan went to the open air cinema to watch Das Geheimnis von Bern, a film about popular music sung in Swiss dialect (of which the Bern dialect proves to be the most popular).

  • Day 8 - Einsiedeln

    August 23, 2025 in Switzerland ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

Our last day in Switzerland was spent in Einsiedeln, a city named after its abbey. Cihan had wanted to visit for a few years. During our visit, thousands of Tamil Hindus were making a pilgrimage there. We took a tour from a local and also made it to another cheesery (Schaukäserei) in the evening before collecting dad from the train station at 6 from his final bagging day. We then went in the chapel and saw the Black Madonna, which dates back to the 15th century.

After sampling James Joyce's favourite wine (according to the man who gave us a tour of the James Joyce foundation in Zurich) which we'd found in the supermarket, we had pizza and a walk up the hill above the abbey, followed by a few beers.

    Switzerland, we'll be back! 🇨🇭
