• St Peter's to Sydney

    17 de agosto de 2022, Canadá ⋅ 🌧 19 °C

What a rainy day!! We had planned to go for a walk a on few trails in around St. Peter's and possibly Battery Provincial Park, but it was pouring rain. All day!!
So instead we went to the St Peter's Canal Historic Site and Learned about how the locks worked. We also learned that brackish means a combination of salt water and fresh water and Bras d'Or Lakes are brackish. And we learned that Bras d"or Lakes is an inland sea not a lake.
We then went to the Nicolas Denys Museum. He founded three settlements, one of them being St. Peter's. The museum does not have any of his stuff but rather a lot of artifacts from his time. It was interesting. The most interesting artifact that is in the museum is a book bound in human skin. Yuch!!! They had it DNA tested and it originates from the Spain/Portugal area. Still Yuch!!!
We then went to the Wallace MacAskill Museum. He was photographer and took pictures when everything was in black and white. His claim to fame is that he took the photo of the Blue Nose that was used for minting the dime.
After doing all that we could in St. Peter's we drove to Sydney.
On our drive we saw a sign for the UNESCO Cape Breton Biosphere. We drove for a while before figuring out that the biosphere was not a specific place but the area around Bras d'Or Lakes. However in the unceded Mi'kmaq territory of Potolak. That's where we found Chapel Island. It seems that this island is a sacred place for the indigenous people in Nova Scotia.

After we settled into our "old school" motel, we went to the Marconi Historic Site and Museum. We learned that Marconi was inventor who is known for inventing the radio wave-based wireless telegraph system. Morse code was to communicate messages with this system.
So it was a day little to no pictures but lots of education. We are hoping that we can get outside tomorrow, see some sites and take some pictures.

  • St Peter's/Bras d'Or Lakes

    16 de agosto de 2022, Canadá ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

Today we did Gerard's favourite thing - driving secondary roads so we can see something new. Our drive was from Elmsdale to St Peter's and should have taken almost 3 hours. It took us 6 🙂
St Peter's is a nice little town with lots of touristy things to do. Since we arrived in the evening we found a place to eat and then took a drive through Battery Provincial Park. Only picture I got was of the fantastic sunset. It's from the park looking over St Peter's Bay to the townsite.Leia mais

  • Elmsdale

    16 de agosto de 2022, Canadá ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

After an uneventful but long flight day we checked in at our bed and breakfast in Elmsdale, Nova Scotia. We lost three hours due to time change but that didn't matter. We were so tired from the events from the last few days, that we found a place to eat and went to bed. The meal for us was a late lunch but ended up being a late supper in Nova Scotia.
We stayed at the Briarwood Bed and Breakfast in Elmsdale. It was lovely and we had a great breakfast. The hosts were very pleasant. Besides staying there that's all we saw/did. I would highly recommend this place if you need to stay somewhere close to the Halifax airport.

  • Royal Tyrrell Museum

    15 de julho de 2022, Canadá ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C

Last entry. We drove to Drumheller yesterday evening so we could get up early and go to the Tyrrell Museum. The first picture is the outside our motel room. The kids loved the museum. They were amazed at the fact that at one time Saskatchewan was both under water and at the equator. A good morning of discovering the history of dinosaurs.Leia mais

  • Johnston Canyon

    14 de julho de 2022, Canadá ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

We had time for one small hike/walk. Grandpa suggested Johnston Canyon and what a good choice that was. We've been on the walk to the lower falls many times and it never disappoints. Lily and Oli enjoyed the walk through the cave. They enjoyed the mountains and were asking why we weren't staying there.Leia mais

  • Two Jack Lake

    14 de julho de 2022, Canadá ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

Lake Minnewanka was super busy so we went to Two Jack Lake. We had some lunch and then hung out in the beach area for a while. The water was cold and it took a long time but eventually the kids both went under the water. The kids have also learned how to turn the car into a change room🙂
Oli also discovered a new sandwich, baloney and raspberry. Yup you read that right. Apparently it tastes good, I wouldn't know.

  • Calgary Zoo

    13 de julho de 2022, Canadá ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

We went to the zoo and everyone enjoyed themselves. Oliver's favourite was the Prehistoric Exhibit (dinosaurs). Lily and Grandpa enjoyed the Canadian Wilds. Lily liked the wolves and Grandpa liked the bears. My favourite was the penguins. I took very few pictures of the animals with the exception of the penguin who seemed to be posing. We also had the opportunity to have a group shot on the red Adirondack chair. As anyone who reads these posts the red Adirondack chairs are always required pictures🙂Leia mais

  • Clear Lake South Shore

Found more red Adirondack chairs at Wasagaming. They were on the end of the peer and it also was a pretty setting.
Also, there is a Beaver Tails on the beach at Wasagaming between the change rooms. Talk about a prime location. And yeah I have this thing for Beaver Tails🤗Leia mais

  • Wishing Well

    21 de outubro de 2021, Canadá ⋅ ☀️ 4 °C

I wasn't going to make any footprints for this trip because it was more of a visit with family than a sight seeing trip. Today we went for a few little hikes. Again I wasn't going to post anything as the hikes were nice but not spectacular. Got to the wishing well and the sun was setting so it was time to pictures. Also there were red Adirondack chairs so the required picture of the view had to be taken🙂Leia mais

  • Jasper Skytram

    29 de setembro de 2021, Canadá ⋅ ⛅ 7 °C

Did the sktyram to get to the top of Whistler's Mountain. Spectacular views. There was a mama grizzly and her two cubs off in the distance. In the picture the red arrows are pointing at the bears. That is about as close as I want to get. Some shots of the town of Jasper. And we saw some elk while driving to the sky tram.Leia mais

  • Lac Beauvert

    29 de setembro de 2021, Canadá ⋅ ⛅ 6 °C

This was a nice easy hike around a very beautiful lake. It had a little of everything, a resort with golf course, some wilderness and some very photogenic geese. Take note of the resort's party room🙂

  • Pyramid Island

    28 de setembro de 2021, Canadá ⋅ ⛅ 9 °C

Pyramid Island is a very tiny island on a rather large lake. People have been visiting it since the 1930's. After years of people visiting the island was ruined. The locals took it upon themselves to restore the island and they did a really good job.Leia mais

  • Greig Lake

    24 de junho de 2021, Canadá ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

We spent the morning at one of Gerard's cousins, then drove almost the whole length of Meadow Lake Provincial Park.
We stayed at a lovely place called Water's Edge Eco Lodge. Its got a very nice retreat feel to it and was just nice to hang out after a day of heavy visiting.
Side note: I tried canoeing for the first time ever and it was pretty good. I am not a swimmer and unsure of the water. So this was a huge hurdle. Thanks Linda for planting the seeds for me to think about conquering my fears.
Side note 2:Saw a bear as we were leaving the park but we didn't have a camera ready.
