At the top of Monte de Santa Luzia, stands the Sanctuary of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Visible from kilometers away, the building crowns the city of Viana do Castelo or, as the locals affectionately call it, the Princesa do Lima.

Canonically erected in the Parish of Santa Maior, it was founded in 1884 by Cavalry Captain Luís de Andrade e Sousa, who suffered from vision problems from an early age and who, in 1882, began to frequent the small chapel of Santa Luzia, paying devotion to the Santa and having masses celebrated.

When he felt improvements in his condition, being able to glimpse the magnificent panorama that the top of Santa Luzia offers, he decided to make this place a better known and accessible point. Thus, he founded the Confraria de Santa Luzia, with the aim of promoting and giving due worship to Santa Luzia, improving the small chapel and its access, namely through the construction of a road.
