  • Lisbon Tiles

    2022年8月10日, ポルトガル ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

Tiles are a huge part of Portuguese history and come in many forms. They are made of ceramic and are painted and glazed to withstand weather and wear. They are a huge part of Portuguese culture and traditions. People who wanted to build their monuments with Portuguese tiles always tried to relate them to the building’s history.

The tiles were originally from Egypt, they were first brought to Portugal by the Arabs, in the 13th century at the time of their invasion.

most of the tiles you find, combine the colours white and blue (mainly).
The colours were considered very fashionable at the time of the Age of Discoveries (from the 15th to the 18th centuries).

  • Lisbon Aquaduct

    2022年8月10日, ポルトガル ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

The"Aqueduct of the Free Waters"is a historic aqueduct in the city of Lisbon. Water was in scarce supply even for Lisbon's earliest inhabitants. The Tagus estuary bordering their settlement was too brackish to be potable due to tidal influx of seawater. People used to bath 3 times in their lives - at birth, before marriage and at death.

King John V decided to build an aqueduct to bring water from sources in the parish of Caneças, in the modern municipality of Odivelas. The project was paid for by a special sales tax on beef, olive oil, wine, and other products.

After delivering its first water in 1748, the aqueduct fed a whole new network of fountains built in the city simply by gravity.

The Tagus river was the initial factor that established Lisbon as a significant Roman port as the estuary provided protection from the ferocious Atlantic Ocean.

At the narrowest point of the mouth of the Tagus estuary the Ponte de 25th Abril suspension bridge connects the capital with the southern commuter distracts of Almada. The design is very similar to the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco.もっと詳しく

  • Port from Porto

From the Quintas of the Douro Valley comes the fine sweetness of the world famous port wine. The oldest controlled wine-growing region in the world shines with a unique creation of world fame - and traditionally stamps the grapes by foot and music, just like hundreds of years ago. It was the British, Dutch and Germans who introduced port wine to the great stage of the wine world. But the dessert wine is typically Portuguese lust for life, between songs, sun and slate. Port wine is something special, whether Ruby, Tawny, White Port or Rosé.もっと詳しく

  • Vila do Condo

    2022年8月15日, ポルトガル ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C

Thanks to an earlier and cooler start, after 10km we Vila do Conde, one of the oldest settlements in northern Portugal.

Its origins date back to the founding of the Portuguese territory; the earliest written document (953), by the Countess Mumadona Dias, refers to the Villa de Comite, in a chart used for the sale of land by Flamula Pelagius, to the Monastery of Guimarães.

An absolutely beautiful little place that was incredibly quiet as we walked in but due to the public holiday, Assumption of Mary, it came to life after mass.

  • Assumption of Mary

    2022年8月15日, ポルトガル ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

The Christian feast day of the Assumption of Mary celebrates the belief that God assumed the Virgin Mary into Heaven following her death. Assumption Day is celebrated on or around August 15 in many countries, particularly in parts of Europe and South America.

Assumption Day commemorates the belief that when Mary, the mother of Jesus Christ, died, her body was not subjected to the usual process of physical decay but was “assumed” into heaven and reunited there with her soul. This holiday, which has been celebrated since the fourth century CE, is a Christianization of an earlier harvest festival and, in many parts of Europe, is known as the Feast of Our Lady of the Harvest.

For centuries celebrations were held in the honor of the goddess Isis of the Sea, who was born on this day according to mythology. With the coming of Christianity church leaders decided that the easiest way to handle this pagan ritual was to simply change it into a Christian holiday, hence the introduction of Assumption Day came forth.

We saw many people combining a combination of both festivities.

Children dressing up for concerts, window displays in the houses and great family traditions where families queued for considerable time outside a restaurant.

This morning we have walked inland and through some interesting villages. We have stopped at a beautiful Camino cafe where they can’t do enough to welcome you.
