  • From Fao to Castelo do Neiva

    16 Ağustos 2022, Portekiz ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

A great 10km this morning walking from Fao towards Casa do Afonso. A slow start as I developed some horrible blisters but a great pharmacist in a village was a huge help and we are back on the road.

This morning we have walked inland and through some interesting villages. We have stopped at a beautiful Camino cafe where they can’t do enough to welcome you.

  • Viana do Castelo

    17 Ağustos 2022, Portekiz ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

Our last 3km into Viana do Castelo was over the Lima River. The city's origins date back to before the Christian era, as it can be seen in the hill fort near the Basilica of Santa Luzia.

It is said that when the Roman legions arrived in the first century C.E. at the falls of the Lima River, they were so taken aback with the landscape that they thought they were at the gates of paradise, with the River Lethe, the famed river of forgetfulness at their feet. The men refused to take another step. The then Councilor who accompanied them charged ahead and crossed it alone. He was then only able to convince the others it was safe by calling out the name of each and every man, to prove that the river hadn't caused him to forget everything.Okumaya devam et

  • Eiffel Bridge

    17 Ağustos 2022, Portekiz ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

The Eiffel Bridge was inaugurated on the 30th of June of 1878, in the time of the iron architecture. Designed by the famous Eiffel House, the metallic bridge over the “Rio Lima” allowed the railway traffic but it also replaced the old wood bridge that linked the S. Bento place in Viana to the left bank of the “Rio Lima”(Darque). With 563 meters long and 6 meter large, 2 000 000 kilos of iron had been required for the construction of the platforms that lay on nine granite squared stone pillars, whose substructures reach the 22 meters.Okumaya devam et

  • Viana do Castelo

    18 Ağustos 2022, Portekiz ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

We are incredibly lucky as we arrived in Viana do Castelo during the Festival of Agony.

Agony, the name of the saint is associated with the queen of the pilgrimages and the many traditions of Portugal's biggest party: the Pilgrimage in honor of Our Lady of Agony, born in 1772 of the devotion of sea men from Galicia and the whole coast Portuguese for religious and pagan celebrations, which are still repeated annually on the municipal holiday.Okumaya devam et

  • Desfile da Mordomia

    18 Ağustos 2022, Portekiz ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

The highlight of the Pilgrimage is the Desfile da Mordomia, where more than 500 women parade while wearing the traditional costume of Viana do Castelo, wearing several pieces of gold. During the parade, the women spread what the inhabitants of Viana do Castelo call “chieira”, which can be translated into vanity, despite meaning something much more specific, which only those who live it can explain.

Viana do Castelo's traditional costume consists of a scarf, a shirt, a vest, a skirt, an apron and an “algibeira” (pocket). The women also wear knee-high socks, crafted in cotton thread lace. Finally, the women wear the "chinelas" (slippers). The “chinelas” have a wooden sole and a natural or synthetic calf upper. The colour of the costume varies depending on the region of the woman who is wearing it.

The taste for wearing traditional dress passes from generation to generation, just like the “dressed costume” that may have been in the woman’s family for several years. Once, only women from Viana do Castelo participated in the Desfile da Mordomia, today people from all over the country, and even foreign women, want to enjoy the experience of participating in the pilgrimage and wear the traditional costume. The parade is a moment of union, with a lot of enthusiasm and, above all, a lot of joy."

Whoever wears the costume knows that they will have to follow some rules, such as: do not have painted nails or wear makeup. Before parading, some ensure that women are following all the rules that must be followed to parade through the most emblematic streets of the city, to the sound of "drums, clapping and many voices."

Because the parade is seen by thousands of people, it makes the "moment even more memorable for those who watch, but especially for those who participate." The young woman believes that the gold that women wear, whether in necklaces or earrings, turns out to be the most appealing to those who watch the show, thus being an “important” element. The amount of gold used is at the discretion of the woman wearing the traditional costume. Certain women like to wear a lot of gold, so they use "gold pieces from the whole family and even from neighbours."

The women from Viana do Castelo are proud to “continue a legacy left by the women” of their city.

The ladies’ skirts are made of thick fabric in stripes or checks in bright, vivid colours, in a full ‘bouffant’ style that are shown at their best in their energetic twirling dances. The skirt itself has a deep band at the hem, and the embroidery is very often traditional to a particular village. More often than not, red is the predominant colour, the ‘happy’ costume worn by the younger women, while a blue/green version is sometimes seen, worn in times of mourning or other sadness.

The first layer of the ladies’ costume is a cotton or linen chemise, with full sleeves, beautifully embroidered in traditional styles, and white ‘pantaloons’, with lace at the knee, long white socks and even embroidered slippers or dancing shoes. The bodice is separate, which is always sewn in two parts - the upper part is of the major colour of the outfit, red, blue, or green, the lower part black. The seam between the two is said to follow the line of the diaphragm! The front is cut low, again heavy with traditional embroidery, a full embroidered apron, and some wear scarves at the neck or on the head. The addition of many heavy gold necklaces can give the outfit a glorious finish. Some even have a separate heart-shaped pocket in which can be carried a handkerchief, but today is more likely to hold keys and a phone!

  • Sanctuary of the Sacred Heart of Jesus

    19 Ağustos 2022, Portekiz ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

At the top of Monte de Santa Luzia, stands the Sanctuary of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Visible from kilometers away, the building crowns the city of Viana do Castelo or, as the locals affectionately call it, the Princesa do Lima.

Canonically erected in the Parish of Santa Maior, it was founded in 1884 by Cavalry Captain Luís de Andrade e Sousa, who suffered from vision problems from an early age and who, in 1882, began to frequent the small chapel of Santa Luzia, paying devotion to the Santa and having masses celebrated.

When he felt improvements in his condition, being able to glimpse the magnificent panorama that the top of Santa Luzia offers, he decided to make this place a better known and accessible point. Thus, he founded the Confraria de Santa Luzia, with the aim of promoting and giving due worship to Santa Luzia, improving the small chapel and its access, namely through the construction of a road.

  • The Romaria

    19 Ağustos 2022, Portekiz ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

Today Helen and Daphne chose to walk on to Praia Ancora while Jaccqui and I chosse to attend the religious ceremony in Vianna do Castelo.

There is a silence is felt throughout the city in an intense moment of devotion and respect but sadly some tourists just did not respect this.

This traditional Religious Procession, the most sacred event in the Romaria d’Agonia programme since the early beginnings.
It is tradition for residents to cover balconies with bedspreads and throw flowers from the windows as the procession advances, as a sign of respect.

The figures of different saints from the São Domingos church are carried in the parade to meet with the float carrying Nossa Senhora de Agonia, awaiting in the sanctuary.

It is with the great effort and faith of the women and men who carry the floats that these travel along the streets of the city flanked by hundreds of participants dressed in costumes to depict various biblical scenes.
A display of faith felt and shared by thousands of people who should watch in complete silence.

  • Nossa Senhora d’Agonia

    20 Ağustos 2022, Portekiz ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

Heading out from Praia do Ancora we walked along the coast and came across another ceremony. This was a smaller ceremony than the one of the festival in Vianna do Castelo but the meaning is the same.

On the day of Nossa Senhora d’Agonia, on August 20th, one of the most memorable events of the Romaria takes place. An ancient devotion of the fishermen to their patron saint, whom they ask for protection in their greatest times of need and to whom, on this day, they give thanks and fulfil their promises and vows.

The end of the mass signals the beginning of the Procession out to Sea. During the procession, the men wearing their finest plaid shirts, as the traditions of the sea dictate, carry the floats with the various saints, on their shoulders out to the quay, always surrounded by their devout wives.

We arrived as the boats were returning and the priest was there and they all proceeded back to the church.

  • Caminha

    20 Ağustos 2022, Portekiz ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

Caminha is a beautiful small town on the border of Portugal.

One of the town’s most significant structures, the clock tower was once the main tower in the medieval castle. It was incorporated into the city walls and sat atop the main entrance to the citadel.

The square is actually more of a circle, radiating from the central chafariz (fountain) which was once the main source of drinking water in the town.

  • Igreja Matriz

    20 Ağustos 2022, Portekiz ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

The Gothic parish church (Igreja Matriz) at the end of Rua Direita was built in the 15th century, at a time when riches from the ‘Age of Discovery‘ dictated that the small enclosed citadel of Caminha deserved the grandest church money could buy.

To make space, the small houses near the river were demolished. However, the main entrance was so close to the city walls that parishioners were reluctant to use it. This was the reason for the grandeur of the ornately sculpted side door, which was more commonly used.

The restaurant is a part of stories. A new House, with beautiful decor and ambience. We ate wonderful mussels, sausages and fritters and regional fish of horta.

The owner was a real character only letting certain people eat at the restaurant and doing everything himself. He also enjoyed a glass of wine or two with us and gave us se really great port.
