  • Choragic Monument of Lysicrates

Wandering through the heart of Athens brought us to the doorstep of the Choragic Monument of Lysicrates, an ancient symbol of celebration dating back to 335/334 BCE. We admired the Corinthian columns as they basked in the Grecian sun, their intricate carvings casting playful shadows around us. The monument's frieze, a lively depiction of Dionysus turning pirates into dolphins, seemed to dance in the light breeze, echoing the festive spirit of the times. Known affectionately as the "Lantern of Demosthenes," this proud structure once stood among a row of monuments, all singing praises of Athens' rich cultural heritage. • Greek Coffee

    24 maja 2024, Grecja ⋅ ☀️ 81 °F

Embarking on a journey through the aromatic lanes of Athens, we found ourselves steeped in the rich history of Greek coffee. This beloved beverage, a symbol of hospitality and leisure, has roots that delve deep into the Ottoman era.

The story of Greek coffee begins in the 19th century, perhaps even earlier, when the traditional brewing method in a kettle—now fondly known as “Greek coffee”—spread across Greece. Imagine the clinking of copper pots, the fragrant aroma filling the air, and the anticipation as the coffee grounds settled into a thick, velvety brew.

In the bustling streets of Athens, the kafeneion, or traditional Greek café, emerged as a cornerstone of social life. These quaint establishments, often simple and unassuming, became the gathering spots for animated discussions and the exchange of news over a cup of the aromatic brew. The kafeneion was more than just a café; it was a cultural institution, a place where men congregated to debate politics, philosophy, and the events of the day, much like the ancient Agora of Athens once did.

As we wandered through the historic center of Athens today, we still caught glimpses of this enduring tradition. The preparation of Greek coffee, with its distinctive foam known as kaimaki, remains a ritualistic art. Whether sipped slowly in the shadow of the Acropolis or enjoyed in a modern Athenian café, Greek coffee continues to be a vital thread in the fabric of Greek culture—a delightful pause in the rhythm of city life, inviting locals and travelers alike to savor a moment of timeless connection.

As we meandered through the storied streets of Athens, a city where ancient whispers met modern strides, the Roman Forum beckoned us. It was like stepping into a time capsule, where togas were the trend and orators held the public’s rapt attention.

Nestled between the iconic neighborhoods of Plaka and Monastiraki, the Forum stood as a proud reminder of the Roman influence on Athens. Its weathered columns and worn cobblestones whispered tales of emperors and traders, their footsteps echoing through the centuries.

We imagined Julius Caesar and Augustus strolling here, discussing politics and commerce. The bustling marketplace came alive in our minds—the aroma of spices, the clatter of coins, and the lively banter of merchants.

And as we stood there, surrounded by history, we couldn’t help but feel connected to those who had walked these same paths long ago. The Roman Forum wasn’t just an archaeological site; it was a bridge between past and present, inviting us to be part of its timeless story.

  • The Hill of the Muses/Filopappou Hill

    24 maja 2024, Grecja ⋅ ☀️ 75 °F

As the sun painted the ancient city in warm hues, we found ourselves standing atop the Hill of the Muses, also known as Philopappos Hill.

Legend has it that the nine muses—the goddesses of inspiration—once called this hill home. Imagine their ethereal presence as we wandered through the whispering pines. Musaeus, the poet and disciple of Orpheus, rests here too, his verses echoing across the ages.

At the summit, we encountered the monument to Philopappus, a tribute to the Roman consul Gaius Julius Antiochus Epiphanes Philopappus. The statues of Philopappus and his family stood weathered but proud, inviting us to ponder their stories. How did they view this same vista centuries ago?

As we climbed to the peak, the city unfolded before us. The Acropolis, with its majestic Parthenon, stood like a guardian. The ancient city sprawled below, its secrets hidden in the cobblestone streets. We snapped photos, hoping to capture the magic.

Was this where creativity bloomed for the muses? Perhaps their whispers still lingered, inspiring all who paused here.

  • Memorial

    28 maja 2024, Grecja ⋅ ☀️ 68 °F

On December 13, 1943, the town of Kalavryta experienced a horrific war crime committed by the 117th Jäger Division of the German Wehrmacht¹.

The massacre was a retaliation for the execution of 78 German soldiers who had been taken prisoner by Greek Resistance fighters in October of that year. In response, the German division's commander ordered the execution of the male population of Kalavryta¹.

On that fateful day, German troops separated the men and boys aged 13 and older from the women and children, leading them to a hill outside the town. Meanwhile, the women, elderly, and small children were locked inside a schoolhouse, which was then set on fire. The men on the hill were executed by machine gun fire, and only a few survived by hiding under the bodies of the dead. The women and children managed to escape the burning schoolhouse, and the next day, the German troops burned down the Agia Lavra monastery, a symbol of the Greek War of Independence¹.

This event is commemorated at the Kalavryta Sacrifice Memorial, which stands as a solemn reminder of the lives lost and the atrocities committed during the war². It's a poignant part of Kalavryta's history that is remembered with great respect and sorrow.
