    Day 76 - Quobba Station

    Two days in a row waking up to Blue Sky, we hope the trend continues. Off to the fishing spot we discovered yesterday, next to the Mine entry. The young guy we spoke to yesterday was just packing up his camp, he didn't catch any fish but saw heaps of bait.

    Down the steep hill we went, only slightly concerned about the long hike back up later. The Ocean was deep blue, no wind (was blowing off shore) and no crashing waves on the rock ledges.

    Looking across to the Mine, there are pontoons, I thought they looked like cars on floats, Wayne thinks I have lost the plot. 🤣

    Again, Wayne fished while I watched the Whales. There was a pod of 6 whales, and I counted one Tail Slappping 8 times in a row, I've never seen it before. Wayne ended up with a huge Dart, the biggest he has seen and a Spangled Emperor, both keepers. Fresh fish for dinner....yum

    Fed a few Seagulls with the remains of the filleted fish. They were happy. Then the trek up the hill, I forgot to take a photo of how steep it was, probably because I was too busy trying to breathe. No heart attacks so we live for another day.

    Back to camp, I collected my dry washing from the line and cleaned up fishing gear, silly Wayne laid down and, of course, went to sleep. I may have also but I read my book instead of a Nana Nap.

    Out to the lighthouse to watch sunset today, a bit of a crowd up there. It was a pretty sunset, still not a cloud in the sky. We discovered another camping ground to the south of Blow Holes while we were up there.

    Went for a drive and discovered a Council Camp for $10 per person, no showers, but had some toilets. It was almost full to overflowing, but right on the beach, I think it's called the Lagoon. Have to remember if we ever get back over this way.    Читать далее

    Day 77 - Quobba Station

    On a roll, another perfect day. Decided that we didn't want to spend a beautiful day driving so stayed another night. Cleaned inside the Van, cleaned the outside of all the windows, rearranged the back of the car again, tidied up the Van tunnels, cleaned the Webber and greased the van suspension.

    Had a great chat to John and Anne, they left today for a 9 week trip across The Gibb River Road and over to Broome, nice to talk to them after so long away, hope to catch up on the track while we are still travelling.

    Jobs done, so off to the beach, went to the one around the corner from Blow Holes, totally different sand than all the other beaches. It had course not fine sand, crystal clear, heaps of ppl snorkelling and swimming, no fishing in this area except for throwing a jig to catch squid.

    Water was so nice, small waves, not cold, no sharks today either which was a relief. Wayne sat in the sun and supervised. Such a relaxing couple of hours, watching the world go by.

    Headed back to camp via the Blow Holes, went to a different spot which was better to view all the holes do their thing. Stopped at quite a few roads to the cliffs on the way back to camp, there were so many whales leaping and playing, of course every time you put the phone down they perform...dam it.

    Spent the rest of the day reading in the sun and Wayne catching up on research and Facebook.    Читать далее

    Day 78 - Quobba to Nanutarra

    Yes, another perfect day. The swell increased overnight, so the waves were huge at the Blow Hole and Lagoon Bay, took some photos, and of course, one at the famous 'King Waves Kill' sign.

    We had a couple of hours of flat landscape as far as the horizon, then changed to Red dirt with Sand Dunes like the Simpson Desert, then Rocky outcrops, 1000's of round red ants nests not like up in NT. then some trees, and back to Sand Dunes. Then, in the middle of nowhere is the Nanutarra Road House.

    Temperature reached a nice 29°, I love it, Wayne is a little apprehensive about what comes next.

    We had planned to stay at the Road House, fill up on water, and watch the State of Origin.....fully booked, so we are in a car park next to Servo. Hopefully they wont throw us out, we aren't the only ones parked here, its not like we are taking business away from them, we will fuel up in the morning and probably have dinner in the Cafe.

    Day 79 - Nanutarra to Samson Pnt

    Very dusty camp with trucks coming and going and one running a generator all night, oh well, it happens.

    Good roads with not much traffic going in our direction, hundreds heading South.

    Fuel at Nanutarra was $2.36 per litre so we drove into Karratha and filled up at $1.89 Booked our accommodation along the way at Samson Point. I assumed that once the School Holidays were over we would be ok for accommodation...not so. One Park was booked out but we managed to get into the other one due to a cancellation, but only one with an ensuite - not cheap but its certainly a nice change being able to leave all the shower gear in the bathroom. Feels like a motel.

    I checked about shopping in Samson Point with the Receptionist when I booked in, she advised to shop at Wickham. We drove into town on the way and I was pleasantly surprised that the only supermarket in town was Woolworths. We thought the prices would be expensive due to it being a Mining town, but very cheap.

    We went for a drive after setting up and a quick repair on the water tap, went to Sam's Creek - looked just like Ross Creek, Honeymoon Cove - nice little bay, was low tide. Checked out the Town Beach - would be good for a swim at high tide, went up a dirt track found a good view. Not much to the town.

    There are 2 caravan parks in Samson Point, didn't notice that they are right next to each other - one either side of a beach, but adjoin on the corner. The other one has a small general store/bottle shop and a Tavern, that is all there is in town except houses and holiday accommodation.

    Did a load of washing and found that the ensuite sites have a clothes line between two sites, nice touch.

    Forgot how noisy ppl are, they don't realise you can every word they say !!!
    No television reception and very little internet, had to walk over to the Camp Kitchen to make phone calls. A little frustrating when trying to organise bookings for the next week or so.    Читать далее

    Day 80 - Samson Point

    Went to the Camp Kitchen to Book for 80 Mile Beach, could only get unpowered, which is fine. Rang around Broome, out of 4 parks I managed to get the last site. Can't believe it is so hard to get into Parks at this time of year.

    Called into Reception and picked up a Fishing Map, so off we went. Down to the Boat Harbour which had a few rock groins which looked ok, Wayne walked out to the end and I sat at some table and chairs in the shade and called Sandy and Alex for catch up chats. Nice breeze thank goodness as their were monster sand flies.

    Heaps of bait moving around, a few schools of good sized mullet and Wayne spotted 2 massive Queenies, not feeding so no fish for us.

    Drove out to Cossack which is a little Heritage town about 15km from Samson Point, didn't know what to expect but it was a lovely place, similar to Silverton. Had an estuary running out to sea and a few islands out front, lots of old buildings, well marked boards describing the history. Good lookout over Settlers Beach and out to Jarman Island.

    I did some research on Cossack and the Art Gallery/Gift Shop has been closed down due to an argument with the ppl running everything and the Government. However, there must of been an event happening this weekend as there were a heap of Porta Loos lined up and a truck unloading sound equipment.

    On the way back to town went over Popes Nose Bridge which had water running over a causeway which looked very 'fishy'. I stayed in the car, no breeze and lots of Sand Flies. Unfortunately no fish but looked good.

    Went to the Tavern for a late lunch - left overs for dinner. Lovely view over the Town Beach, lots of people enjoying the good food and atmosphere. Wayne discovered a loose Upper Control arm on the drivers side, so spent some time trying to book into a mechanic in Broome to check it out.

    The Tavern had free Wifi which was handy, wish I had known that yesterday. Went back to camp and listened to the neighbour learning to cook curried fish on rice, as I said, ppl don't realise or don't care about their volume.    Читать далее

    Day 81 - Samson Pnt to Cape Keraudren

    On the road nice and early, easy drive through Port Hedland and up to the Cape which is a Reserve which has toilets, dump points and rubbish bins. Spent a couple of nights here on last trip.

    Drove over the hill coming into the bay and we were wow'd again by the colour of the water. Lots of Vans spread around the cliffs and bowl near the boat ramp.

    Found a spot with a good breeze, a bit closer to the neighbours than we normally park but within reason. One couple next to us were really friendly but the ppl on the other side weren't happy, the lady came out and shook her head at us. They had parked their car a long way from the Van so we parked next to their car - not near the van. They both proceeded to tell us all the other spots that we could park - of course we stayed right there. haha

    It was low tide so we went for a drive to see where to go fishing tomorrow, it is a 5.5m change over so very little water in the bay. Went back to Van and chatted with the nice couple who were from Victoria, they were travelling south and had been up north of Broome where we are headed. We were told that the wind would pick up early hours of the morning and then drop off again the next day.

    Day 82 - Cape Keraudren

    4am the wind was screaming in, we hadn't put out the awning so all good. Went fishing off the rocks next to the Boat Ramp, lost a lure which we will go back for a low tide, lots of bait flicking around but nothing feeding.

    Drove over to the next bay and down onto the beach, I paddled while Wayne threw a lure around for a while - no salmon for dinner.

    Wind finally dropped off completely at 1pm. Lazy afternoon chatting to some new neighbours from Sydney.

    The Ranger did his rounds a couple of times to check that ppl had paid, must have a data base for those registered on line, never asked us for our proof.

    Day 83 - Cape Keraudren to 80 Mile Beach

    Wind didn't pick up last night as strong as the last couple of nights so we did a few jobs then sat out in the breeze and enjoyed our morning coffee.

    We only had 116 km to drive so didn't leave until 10.30, called into Pardoo Service Station (which got flattened in a cyclone last year) just put 60 ltrs in @ $2.39

    The Western Aust Dept of Roads really needs to be commended, the roads are so good, no pot holes, no lumps and bumps. Wayne assures me it is a pleasure to drive on. Not a cloud in the sky and we hit 30 degs today....yay.

    Drove the 9km of red dirt into the Caravan Park, came over the hill and there it is, spectacular coloured water, sand dunes and white beaches. We love this place, which is why we have come back for 4 nights.

    We were given a choice of a powered site with a few vans around us or an unpowered all by ourselves on a lovely grass stretch including good drinking water on tap.... guess which one we chose.

    The Van backs onto the single sand dune onto the beach. It doesn't get any better. We set up, even put the awning out, went for a walk to the beach and got knocked out again by the scene in front of us.

    Low tide so Wayne wanted to find some gutters along the beach ready for fishing at high tide tomorrow, drove for 20km up the firm sand with only a couple of other cars. Found quite a few spots that look good, so headed back to Van so he can get the gear ready, washing and reading for me.

    Sunset is a tradition at 80 Mile Beach, I did a quick count of 100 people just around one access to the beach...it wasn't crowded though, heaps of space for everyone.

    Day 84 - 80 Mile Beach

    This place is awesome, green grass, blue sky, huge camp site, no wind just a gentle breeze, beautiful turquoise water, heaps of fishing, stunning sunsets....what more could you ask for?

    The only and I mean only down side is I can't swim due to sharks :( but everything else makes up for it.

    Wayne has done his research so we headed out two hours before the high tide ready to catch some Salmon or maybe a Mullaway. Found a couple of gutters yesterday to try out, off we went up the beach.

    Tried Pilchards on the 2 beach rods, soft plastic and a Flasher lure on the luring rod, one hit for the 3 hours of trying. Never mind tomorrow is another day. Spoke to another fisherman and he didn't catch a fish either.

    We were talking about heading back to camp and a car got stuck in the soft sand, so we gave him a tow....twice to get him going again. There were a couple of guys there ready to help but the 200 did it easily.

    Relaxing afternoon reading, I was going to clean the Van and wash the towels but my book was calling me.

    We went down for the Sunset again at 5.30, just as good as yesterday and just as many people, still amazed at how far the tide goes out here. Nice way to finish the day, so peaceful.    Читать далее

    Day 85 - 80 Mile Beach

    Well, I must have jinxed myself with yesterdays comments. Woke up to wind and rain. 🫣

    Thought I would test my luck and wash the towels.....nope didn't stop the rain.

    Raincoats on, back up the beach to a different spot. 2 hours and not even a bite. Moved along the beach to where some locals we fishing, nobody caught anything today.

    Got a text from Van Park with a special deal for dinner, Parmie and Salad. Sold, night off cooking. (Was good, too)

    Sun finally came out to play, so we put out the Solar Blanket to top up the power.    Читать далее

    Day 86 - 80 Mile Beach

    Sun is back. 😃 Beautiful sunrise.

    Decided to fish where we caught Salmon 2 years ago, right in front of the Park. There were dozens of ppl doing the same thing and dozens of ppl catching nothing....

    Spent 3 hours using different baits, throwing lures and Wayne caught a Black Tip Shark and another Stingray. I caught a Seagull, someone thought it was very funny!!!

    As its our last day here we gave the car a wash to get rid of salt and sand on the outside and I then stripped the inside for a vacuum and dust down. Looks nice inside and out.

    Lots of tiny Wallabies around the Park. Easy night in the Van.    Читать далее

    Day 87 - 80 Mile to Broome

    Another sunny start to the day, sad to be leaving here as it is such a chilled spot to spend time - even when we didn't catch fish. On the road early (9am).

    Would have like to check out Barn Hill Station, but it was booked out. I had a few ppl telling us how nice it is.

    Had a horrible reminder along the road of the dangers of towing. Car and Caravan roll over, an old couple and their dog blocking half the road. Luckily, they were all ok, thank goodness. Fortunately, they didn't need medical assistance, as it is 4 hours from Broome and 4 hours from Port Headland. Basically, in the middle of nowhere.

    Stopped to make sure they were ok and didn't need immediate assistance, quite a few vans had also pulled up, Wayne suggested that they disconnect the battery in case it caught fire, which they agreed was a good idea.

    For the first time in weeks, there was heaps of road kill, mostly small wallabies, rabbits, and 1 very bloated cow, which looked ready to burst...yuck!

    Returning to Broome was nice. We all like the atmosphere here. The Vacation Village is out of town a little bit and about 6km from Cable Beach.

    Quick set up and went to find some lunch. Of course, we headed to a familiar Cafe right on Cable Beach. Beautiful location with green lawns right out front of the beach. A big and very good surprise is there is now Life Guards on the beach so it is safe to swim....so excited. Naturally, I didn't bring my togs.

    Day 88 - Broome

    Up early to do some washing - nope both machines busy. Checked again - nope. Guess I will wash tonight.

    Off to Tackle World for some fishing line and yes more Lures. Next stop the Tourist Info Centre to find out about going north of Broome next week to Smithies and Cape Leveque, Chemist for new sand fly repellent, I hate Bushman's, last shop was Bunnings for tap fitting.

    Guy at tackle shop told us the Cape Leveque is now closed, left to rot with no maintenance so is now unsafe to enter. Tourist Info gave us some brochures about Ardi - Dampier Peninsula, it was a very busy place, short staffed I think, cued up for 20 mins to get to the counter. Bunnings was packed with stock and people, staff were really helpful and friendly.

    Lunch, swimmers, block out, The Locals insect repellent and water packed. Off to Coconut Wells Lagoon, Rock Pools and Willie Creek.

    I didn't do my homework with the tides so our first stop at the Lagoon was low tide so we headed to the Rock Pools, so peaceful watching the tide come in, Wayne had a nap on the beach while I had a swim. Went back to the Lagoon when the tide was almost in but not big enough to create the Lagoon or for the creek to flow...bummer.

    Off to Willie Creek, which was 9 km of red corrugated dirt, reminded us of the Cape. Went to the Pearl Farm but quickly turned around and went to the creek where there were a few Vans camped in the scrub. Drove down onto the rocks next to the creek which was the most beautiful blue, looking across to the white sands where the creek ran out to sea.

    Water was crystal clear, had our lunch on the back of the car then I went for a swim as the tide receded from the rocks. Was a lovely way to spend the afternoon.

    Day 89 - Broome

    Hit 33 degs today, loving it. Decided to hang around Broome and play tourists today.

    Went to the Port Jetty which serves a vital function within the Kimberley regional economy. It services vessels working in the pearling, fishing and charter boat industries, cruise ships, naval and customs boats with the majority of the port’s annual income derived from the offshore oil and gas industry, cattle export, petroleum, and general cargo.

    Beautiful beach right next to the jetty with another 'Nature Window', love the interesting rock formations.

    Then went over to Croc Jetty in the turquoise water of Roebuck Bay, also called the Town Beach, great water park on the shore for the kids.

    Low tide so didn't take enough photo's. Back to town for a top up at Woolies, we are without the car tomorrow, getting it checked out for a noise in the front end.

    Heading up north of Broome on Tuesday for a week which is off grid so need to be prepared with food, water etc.

    Wayne sorted the fishing gear out so its organised for next week, I had a nanna nap to see if I could fix my back, hurt it yesterday.    Читать далее

    Day 90 - Broome

    Dropped the car in for its inspection. Got the call to collect and told the Upper Control Arms have been recalled and will be replaced under warranty.

    This is good news. However, the earliest they can get the parts and fit them will be Wednesday week.

    We have juggled our plans and will stay up in the Dampier area for longer, not a hardship....

    Had Sushi for lunch, I was going for a swim back at the Park but very crowded. Spent afternoon planning the next leg of the trip. Darwin, Lichfield, and Kakadu.

    Talked to Alex about our plans, and he told us about some of his experiences at Smithies from 2 years ago.    Читать далее

    Day 91 - Broome - Dampier Peninsular

    We are off to Smithys Seaside Adventures today. The website recommends not to come in until after 12, so the vans leaving can get through.

    180km from Broome, the last 43km are a bit rough with corrugations, large lumps like speed bumps, rocks, and the end 10km is only wide enough for one vehicle.

    To add to the excitement, two lads were back burning along the road, so it was very smokey and flames licking the side of the Van. Bit nerve-racking.

    Got here and found 'Reception' . A box on the table with a note asking to leave $25 per head per night in an old plastic container, fill out details in a book, welcome ! Love it. 😜

    Decided to camp above the beach to enjoy the view and the breeze. Nice sandy spot overlooking Pender Bay. Toilets and cold showers are available, plus great drinking water just outside our site.

    The fire came back to bite us when the wind changed early in the evening and filled the whole camp site with thick smoke. Had to close up the Van and put the fans on for the night.    Читать далее

    Day 92 - Smithys

    All the smoke has cleared, and we have blue sky again. Heading up the beach for a fish and swim.

    Just getting organised and Smithy arrives to fix a leaking tap next to us. What a funny bloke. He talked about a dozen different topics in half an hour. Then his wife strolls over to tell him to turn the water back on so ppl can use the toilets.

    We told Smithy that Alex said to say hi, and we mentioned that he had stayed here 2 years ago and there was a scorpion bite and Smithy had to rush the lady to Beagle Bay for treatment, he laughed when he remembered the story. And yes, she survived.

    Up to the rocks at the end of the beach, Wayne headed off with his rod, and I hit the water. Was a bit stirred up with the wind, but the temp was beautiful.

    Relaxing on the beach with our awning out, and we saw that they were burning off again. The Cliffs along the beach are really red in some places and deep iron coloured in others.

    Watched 3 vans coming along the beach. I'm pretty sure the first one got bogged and decided that was where he was staying. The other 2 pulled up behind him.

    We rang the car place to see how our part was coming along. They need more photos before they send the part. grrr    Читать далее

    Day 93 - Smithys

    Up early for phone call at 5.30am...ouch.
    Went for a drive Middle Lagoon, which is about 10 km from Smithys. Paid our $20 for day pass, lovely lady at Reception, great looking park, and the swimming beach is stunning. Chrystal clear water, white beaches, and Whales jumping just off shore. We were both instantly sold, moving tomorrow, booked for the next 3 nights.

    Still having problems organising to fix the Upper Control Arms on the 200. It's hard when going through a third party (Mechanic). Had left messages to find out what they achieved since Monday to get the part, basically nothing.

    Of course there was a problem with phone service, luckily we we still at Middle Lagoon and the LL let me use the landline in the office. Rang the mechanic and told her we would organise ourselves and get work done in Darwin, I think she was relieved.

    Long story short - part being sent, mechanic and wheel alignment booked.

    Back to camp for a swim, relax, and watch silly ppl getting bogged on the beach, was good entertainment.

    Talked to a fisherman camped near us, and he was telling us about how good golden trevally are to eat. We agreed and suggested he try Sashimi. He was keen to try and even dropped a fillet in for us....yum.    Читать далее

    Day 94 - Smithys to Middle Lagoon

    Left camp at 10 and arrived at Middle Lagoon 15 mins later, haha. We were swimming by 11am.

    We are in paradise. we just love this place. Clear, calm water, big sites, sea view, nice breeze, no smoke from fires, walk 10m to beach, Cafe to buy lunch or coffee, great temperature, fishing off the rocks and beautiful sunset.

    Sat outside star gazing after sunset, first time this trip. 🥰 Either been too cold or full moon. Perfection 💓    Читать далее

    Day 95 - Middle Lagoon

    Early swim at Ridge Beach right in front of the Van, all by myself, perfect. Wayne is going fishing around at the next bay, which is Lagoon Beach.

    Put in a good effort but no fish on shore, plenty being caught out on the reef from boats.

    Day 96 - Middle Lagoon

    It's a bit overcast today, but it's still good for swimming. 😀

    Tried to get service to check on a few things, but no good.

    Fixed a couple of problems with the Van, door sticking, the Webber slide got off track.

    Apart from those jobs, relaxed and people watched the comings and goings.

    Storm clouds rolled in late afternoon, but there no rain.    Читать далее

    Day 97 - Middle Lagoon to Broome

    Back with internet, I need to back track a few days. All caught up, not many photos.

    Washed the Van at the car wash in Broome, about 8 vans Lined up to do the same. Cost about $30 but worth it, Van looks loved again.

    Staying at Vacation Village again, tight corner site, but all good. We have to go shopping to cover food for the next 5 days until we get to Darwin and pick up Alex.    Читать далее

    Day 98 - Broome

    Felt like we hadn't left this Park when we woke up. The phone call we came back to Broome for has been delayed, got some jobs done in town while we waited.

    Washed the car (looks like new....almost), installed new wiper blades, topped up water, washed, shopped.

    Bought some more BBQ cleaner for the Webber, it works a treat. Finally got our call out of the way. Still chasing our Upper Control Arms, apparently they are now being sent from South Australia.

    Quite warm here today around 32 deg and yes I went for a swim in the pool. More than ready to leave Broome now, still hard to get the gist of the town, very spread out and no pattern that is easily followed. There are about 3 different industrial areas, one has Bunnings, Mitre 10 is dead centre of town, camping store at another section, car mechanic in another direction.

    Trying to buy alcohol is difficult in WA, so many restrictions even when you explain that you will be out of town for a week or more. All good, managed an exemption.

    Off grid for the next 4 or 5 days so probably no postings.    Читать далее

    Day 99 - Broome to Mary Pool Rest Area

    Up early, doing nearly 600km today. Rang Tom from Ironman about our parts. Still haven't been sent....grrrr

    Wayne took over the phone and ripped the guy a new butt, kept his cool, but told him the facts. Within an hour, we had the consignment note number, finally!!!

    Driving East today, and the landscape changed continuously, from open fields to low scrub, then started seeing heaps of Boab Trees, which I love. Then, out of nowhere, massive rocks pop up, which formed into the Erskine Ranges.

    Went straight through Fitzroy Crossing, then over the river, which had heaps water. Nearly every creek crossing was bone dry, so it was a novelty to see water.

    Pulled into Mary's Pool at around 5 pm, parked next to a dry creek bed, but think the main part is on the other side. Will check it out in the morning as it's nearly dark.

    Had a good catch-up with Alex and the boys by video, still 32 degs at 5.30    Читать далее

    Day 100 - Mary Riv - to Lake Argyle

    Mary River Rest Area is lovely, plenty of trees, only a puddle in the River, heaps of room, toilets, dump point and hundreds of friendly cows wondering everywhere.

    9.30 am and it's 30 degs. 🌞
    Day 100 - Wow, time is flying, 7 weeks left 😳

    Quick lunch at Warnum, we were going to fuel up, but $2.80 pl, heading to Durack, Doon Doon Roadhouse only $2.34 pl, put in a quick 40 ltrs and drove through to Kununurra, @ $1.97 Saved about $160. 😃

    Slight change of plans. We are now at Lake Argyle, stayed here a couple of years ago, and loved it.

    Have a non-powered site, which is cool, close to the pool, Wayne has checked out where to fish tomorrow, so happy campers.    Читать далее
