Well, that was a terrible night. We stayed at the Giraffe Hotel. The top floor of the hotel was a club at night and you could hear music resonate in the room all night long. It was a way sketchier accommodation then expected.

We caught a cab to the ferry docks. Locals grabbed our bags as we got out of the cab and at first we weren’t sure if they were trying to steal them. They ended up selling us tickets to the ferry and just tried to catch tourists before they go to the official terminal. It was raining out so we went along with it. Not sure how much we got ripped off. From there one of the guys escorted us to the terminal and carried our luggage. He flipped out when we didn’t give him a large of enough tip and demanded $20 US dollars. We didn’t cave in, and he stood around awkwardly for 10 minutes expecting us to pay more.

The ferry had a special tourist level, kind of like VIP. The ferry ride to Zanzibar was long and boring. In hind site, we could have caught a flight directly from Arusha Airport. Wish, I realized that.

We had a bit of time left in the day to explore Stone Town, Zanzibar. We wandered around and as luck would have it, the best recommended restaurant in town had a space for us. They do a roof top private dinner each night with set menu and live entertainment. It was a lovely experience, and the food was delicious.

We continued our exploration of Stone Town. We walked in the narrow streets, bought spices at the market and admired the colonial architecture. The doors are very special in Stone Town. All very unique and ornate. There are many small shops, street vendors, hotels, restaurants, cafes and beaches.

We went to the main square in the evening and purchased are dinner from a few of the different food vendors. One of the locals came up to us and chatted for a while, he wanted to work on his English.

Eric woke early to catch the sunrise on our final morning. We took a cab back to Stone Town followed by a flight to Dar Es Salam and then a really long flight back home.

It’s a bittersweet end to our trip. We are sad that are travels are over but excited to head home and see all our family and friends. 6 months have flown by. We learned a lot on this trip about ourselves and each other and how we like to travel. The people we met, the cultures we experienced, the food we tried were all amazing. Walking away, the epic hikes have to be the highlight of the trip. They pushed us physically and mentally and rewarded us with beautiful scenery and vistas and a sense of accomplishment. We’ll also never forget the good times exploring New Zealand by camper van.もっと詳しく
