Day 47, another carnaval hangover
19. februar, Bolivia ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C
Pfff! Not again! Yes. We woke up still a bit drunk 😬 but we had a mission, because we really did not have any clothes left, so we had to go to the laundarette. We have booked a night bus for tomorrow night 22:00, to Uyuni, but our laundary should be ready tomorrow at 08:30. Just in time to pack our backs with clean clothes and check out on time. Let's hope it works! 🤞
We got a few cold, sweet drinks to hopefully cure our hangovers, and went back to the hotel. Around dinner time we went out, but here people mainly eat warm for lunch, so most things were closed. We walked all the way to the main square and found a pizza place, where we ate a small pizza each and shared a big mixed salad together. We also took another pizza to the hotel for later. We relaxed a bit and watched a movie.Læs mere
Day 46, Carnaval keeps on going!
19. februar, Bolivia ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C
After an extreme lazy hangover day, we woke up fresh and energetic, and under the impression that the water fights would be over today. We went outside and people decorated their homes with balloons and flower petals. They also lit little barbecues, but that was not for grilling. We also did not see people selling water balloons, so we thought we were finally safe. In the last two days, it seemed like we were extra targeted because we are tourists 🤭
But then we got a few really hard water ballons splashing on the back of our heads, and suddenly the people who were selling water balloons were also back! So we armed our selves again, bought some beers, and were back in the game! Later in the evening we found the nina ninas again, and met some of the people of two days ago. We are guessing the rest had their hangover day today 🤭 we did not make any pictures because of all the water and foam. We protected our phones in plastic bags, but everything else was completely soaked again. There were some places where the waterfight went really hard, like one street with a 'hidden' park, which was like a trap. In the park there were a lot of people armed to the teeth with water balloons and as soon as a group passed, the whole park went on them 🤣 we had a great day again and met some new people too. We also managed to buy two of the last Nina Ninas tshirts, and went home. Although the city wide waterfight was extremely fun, we hope tomorrow it is over, because we got quite paranoid of it, looking all the time over our shoulders 😂 also, we don't have dry clothes anymore 🤭Læs mere
Day 45, hangover day
17. februar, Bolivia ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C
We didn't do much today. We went outside around 17:00. We could hear the fanfare bands passing the hotel already since 10:00. As soon as we went out, we got hit with waterballoons and foam again. It was quite hard to find something to eat, because everthing was closed because of carnaval. But we found a place that had a nice sandwich. Since we had huge hangovers, we didn't feel like partying again today, and went back to the hotel. When we were almost at the hotel, we got a few more waterballoons that hit us, so there are now a lot of clothes hanging to dry in the hotel room. We relaxed, watched videos and a movie, and went to sleep.Læs mere
Day 44, part 2, Carnaval 💜💚☠️
16. februar, Bolivia ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C
After a very bad start of the day, things only got better 😊 we started walking to the hotel again, and a big dog started following us. He made us feel a bit safe again ❤️ we arrived at the hotel and we had a rest. Carnaval is starting today, with a childrens thing at 09:00, and a grownup thing at 12:00. We don't know what is actually happening today though 🤭
So, after some rest it was time to go outside. About every 20 meters there are people selling filled water balloons. 6 in a bag for 2 bolivianos (0,25 euro). They also sell spray cans with foam. Hmmm... what does this mean? 🤔 every now and then we got sprayed on with water from cars, and some people sprayed foam on us. we saw many groups of people wearing the same tshirts and accopanied by big fanfare bands. We thought there would be a parade so we walked to the main square, but that was closed off for cars and and it was super empty. We got us some breakfast and went on our way again. Then the fun really started! Water balloons were flying everywhere and we decided to follow one group with band. At some places people were throwing buckets full of water over the group and water fights started to happen. Nobody is safe, and water can come from any direction. There are people on roofs and balconies, inside cars, on top of cars, everywhere! So to not just be targets, we got ourselves some balloons and a spray can and started joining the party! 🥳 it seems like a few blocks of houses have their own group, wearing their colors and waving their flags. Every group also has a marching band. They walk around and go into other groups blocks, where water fights then errupt.
We left the group we were following, stocked up on our balloons, and went looking around. We found a perfect group, called Nina Ninas, who were wearing purple and green shirts, with bones and skulls 💜💚☠️ perfect! So the rest of the day we stayed with them and had a lot of fun dancing and throwing and receiving water balloons. We were completely, completely soaked, and when it got a little bit colder around 19:00, we went to the hotel to put on some dry clothes. Here we realised why the fake cop stole Eikes rain jacket, and we also know why.
Back on the street it was dark and the water fights just kept on going, so we got some rain ponchos. We found the Nina Ninas again and partied with them untill about 01:00. They kept feeding us booze, and we went very drunk to bed.Læs mere
Day 44, We got robbed
16. februar, Bolivia ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C
The busride felt quite short because we slept quite a lot. The bus was also 45 minutes early. The hotel vas only an 18 minutes walk away, so we decided to walk instead of taking a taxi that would charge us too much. That was a bad idea. We were walking for about 5 minutes when a woman came to us, asking for directions. A car stopped and a guy said he was police and showed us a badge. He looked at our passports and let us walk again. 2 minutes later another guy asked us for directions, and again the police guy showed up. He wanted to check our bags for drugs and got a taxi saying he was intelligence and showed the taxi his badge. We had to go to the police station he said. The guy who asked us directions also had to come with us. The taxi stopped somewhere and the guy had to give his bag to the police guy to get it searched. Then eike had to give his bag. Nina started asking a bit pissed why we didn't go to the police station. It was because the other guy was in a hurry he said. The police guy smelled everything and kept asking if we had more money in our bags. We lied and said no. Then everything was ok he said, and let us out of the taxi. The taxi then quickly drove off. Since everything was really fishy and weird, we checked if we still had everything. Eikes money was gone (about 100 euro) and it seemed ninas wallet was gone too, but luckily we found it later. Later eike also found out that his rain jacket was missing (sounds weird, but in the next pinguin of today it becomes clear why). It could have gone a lot worse, and they could have taken everything. Luckily our passports, bank cards, cameras and ipad were still there. We feel really really stupid we stepped into this trap, because we both knew it was wrong what was happening, but we also know that they were with four people and they could have knives or something. We walked away unharmed but 100 euro and a rain jacket lighter.Læs mere
Day 43, spending daytime in Cochabamba
16. februar, Bolivia ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C
It was raining a lot during the night ant went on this morning. We planned to have the hotel breakfast, but there wasn't any. 🤷♀️ we checked out and went to the minivan. There we had to wait a bit for more people to fill up the van. The drive was easy again but Nina didn't manage to make a picture of the road that had half broke off and fallen down. Schade!
We arrived 2,5 hours later and started roaming the streets. Our bus to Sucre was going at 21:30, so we had some time to kill. We were very hungry and went to Dumbo. We got an extreme anount of food and we were really full. We started walking around some more and came to a cinema. The newest movie about Linda Liddle (evil dead) was going to start in half an hour, so we bought two tickets and went inside. There were only 4 other people. The movie was dubbed in Spanish, but it was not difficult to follow. The movie was not what we expected, but it was funny 😊
When the movie was finished, we walked to the park and sat there for a while. Eike really felt like having a frappé, so we went to get some, and some cake. We went back to the park and waited a bit more, and then took a cab to the bus terminal. It was super super filled with people there. At 21:00 we could finally go to the bus and get to our seats. We went to sleep quite fast.Læs mere
Day 42, last day in Torotoro
16. februar, Bolivia ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C
We slept long today and as usual missed the breakfast. We went to grab a sandwich and coffee and booked a nightbus for tomorrow evening from cochabamba. From here we have to go back to cochabamba because the minivans are not going anywhere else. Then we went to the tour office and booked a small tour to the turtle cementary. We had the same tourguide as with our big hike. The walk was easy this time and the weather was nice too. The dog (not Malo), who was following us since our hotel, walked also with us. We walked through the town and then a bit further, through farm fields. It is so beautiful here ❤️ we came to a building where Victor gave us a lot of information about the beginning of the world and how the bible is so wrong 🤭 he gave us information about how the land changed and how the dinosaurs adapted to it. There was also a little bit ceramics from before the inca's and pieces of turtle remains. Then he showed us a video which had nothing to do with the information, because it was a promotion video to go to torotoro 🤭 then we went outside and it was an archeological digging site where they had put some replicas of dead turtles and a crodile, but it was a bit of an anticlimax. We didn't mind because the walk was nice anyway. We walked back and said goodbye to Victor. The rest of the day we hung out with the dogs and Malo found us again ofcourse. We bought some eggs and bread, gave Malo two eggs and a bread, and then we gave the rest to a small thin dog, and the saddest dog we saw here. He was really happy with it, but also didn't seem to understand why he got a whole bread. He went to sleep right after, because he finally had a full belly it seemed. Then we went to the hotel, packed our bags and went to sleep.Læs mere
Day 41, lazy day
12. februar, Bolivia ⋅ 🌙 15 °C
It was a lazy day today, because we had muscle pain in our legs and arms. We did manage to get the hotel breakfast, but went back to bed after that. We did not plan another walk for today, and we hung around the village. We have so many doggie friends now, but every day new dogs show up that we haven't met yet. One dog manages to always find us, and when he does, he stays with us for hours. But he is also the naughtiest dog of all. He sometimes barks at certain people and he is very protective of us, so he chases all our other dog friends away. 🫤 we call him malo, because he is a bad dog. But he is sweet too and always so happy to see us again. He has a bad leg, and we think his elbow is displaced and his nerve is stuck. We also think a motorcycle might have run into him because he chases only certain motorcycles. So. Enough about the dog!
Fun dinosaur fact: When you look at the picture above, the map where torotoro lies, you can see that it lies in a crocodile tail shaped valley. This whole valley and the 'crocodile tail' plates are full of dinosaur footprints, but most of them still hidden in the limestone plates.
The weather here is really nice to enjoy, at daytime it has 25°C and a bit of wind, but the sun is still different to europa. Better to use suncreme before you get burned. Or wear a stupid hat 😅
While nina was writing the pinguin diary, eike went for another walk and ended at the local football place where some kids played. For sure a dog friend was following him and had the time of his life😅. After Eike picked up Nina, we went to drink a cocktail. There was a new dog we did not meet before, who smelled really bad, like cow shit, so we did not pet him 😅 but he was sweet too. We thougt it would be nice to eat something while drinking the cocktails, so we ordered a plate with cheese and vegetables but we got some potato chips, nuts and mais🤣. But fine, we got another beer in the streets and went for local street food for dinner. Pollo, arroz y patata 🤌 ( 1 euro)
For sure our friend dog Malo came by so he could get some pollo too. Eike gave him a piece after we were done eating. We took another walk and we tought it would be nice to buy dinner for Malo too. We can't get rid of him anyway, so we just as well give him some food too. He really liked the pollo sausage we bought him and it was gone in two seconds 😅 The Evening was really calm, drank some beers and enjoyed the streets with our dog friend. At the end of the day we also met Apolinar again, hung out with him for a while and had some laughs. Tomorrow we will see if we can do another, but smaller hike. Good night! 😘Læs mere
Day 40, dinosaur expedition
12. februar, Bolivia ⋅ ☁️ 23 °C
Ha! This morning we did not miss hotel breakfast! We got picked up at half past eight, and we went first to the dinosaur footprints we already saw yesterday from a distance. It is right outside town and about 10 minutes walk from our hotel, but there is a fence around it and you can only go in with a tour guide. Our tourguide was Victor, and he knew a lot about the dinosaurs, the geology and the nature in torotoro. He only spoke spanish, but we understood everything he said. The first footprints were of an ankylosaurus. Victor explained that the mountain was once flat and the stones used to be mud. The type of earth that is in torotoro dries up in the sun and gets really hard. That was also in the time the dinos made their prints, and eventually turned into stone. We also saw the footprints of meat eaters and two legged planteaters. We also understand why there is a fence around it and you can only see it with a guide. Although the prints turned into stone, the stone is made of thin layers that break off easily. It is not as stable as we thought. This site was also dug out by paleontologists, and they only did a little piece of the mountain, to preserve the other footsteps. After we explored this site, we went into the van and drove a little bit further (10 minutes) to walk to the next digging site. This was bigger and flat. Here we could walk on the site, but we had to be careful to not step on the footprints. This was not so easy, because there were footprints everywhere! Small, big, mini, meat eaters, plant eaters, everything criss cross over the site! Eike was so happy! Like a little kid 🥰 Victor explained a bit more about the geology of the valley, about lime stones and sandstones. We explored the footsteps some more and there were also tail prints dragging through the then mud, and meat eaters running over the then sea floor, which you could see because the toes grabbed powerfull in the mud. Spinosaurus!
Then we went on with our hike and Victor asked if we had virtigo, so Nina said yes, and if we would take it slow, it would probably be ok 😅 we walked down a canyon, over a rocky road and everything was easy. Down in the canyon it was beautiful! There was a river and rocks and little watterfalls that went into a little pool and from there a litte waterfall again and so on. The sun started to burn really hard, but Nina had her stupid hat, and eike made a hat out of his bandana, so it was fine. We walked beside the river over a small path and enjoying the views. We came to a cave and Eike and Victor were going in and Nina would walk around it. The cave ended at a deep gap. Victor came to pick up Nina (aparantly the cave was a shortcut) and Nina had to climb over the stones that had fallen over the gap. Under it was also a waterfall from a subterranian river. It was high! Nina's Virtigo kicked in hard, but Victor managed to keep Nina calm, and helped her over the gap 🥳 Eike had walked a bit further already, so he didn't see Nina's achievement 😅 from here the path went down, and smaller and smaller and the abyss (afgrond, abgrund) got closer and steeper 😬 there came a few times where we really had to be carefull, and had to stand with our bellies to the rock wall and go side ways. Yes, here Nina's virtigo was really tested 😵💫 but again, Victor, and now also Eike kept her calm and she made it! 🥳💪 she was really proud of her self! Eike too! When we were aaaalmost down, there came a wooden bridge of about 3 or 4 meters high and also 3 or 4 meters long, and about 40 cm wide. That was more of a problem for Nina than the steep wall , so she went over it on her hands and feet 🤣 then we were at the bottom of the canyon and we had to climb the rocks, which was not that hard. We came at a point where we had to take our shoes off and go through the water. The water was nice and refreshing. We put our shoes on again and climbed further, untill there was a point where we could go through the water again, or climb around it. Eike climbed, and Nina picked the water. We took a break where we ate something and Eike took a dive. Ninas pants were still wet from the water walk, so she was fine. After lunch we climbed further over the rocks at the bottom of the canyon and came to a big waterfall, also from a subterranian river, so it came out halfway the canyon. It was very beautiful. Then it was time to hike up again, but this time it was going up really fast, and Nina got out of breath quickly. Most of the path was stairs, and 300 meters high 🥵 but we all made it! We came to a viewpoint looking over the canyon, made some pictures, and walked further. We walked past, and in a river that was dry, eventhough it is supposed to be rainy season 🤷♂️ here there were dinosaur footprints again, the biggest so far, from a brachiosaurus. It is the 4 steps it makes, and the hind prints stepfor 3/4 into the front steps. We walked a bit more in the dry river and then finally, after 9 hours we got into the van that drove in 10 minutes back to our hotel. Our legs were already starting to hurt of muscle pain so we rewarded ourselves with a nice hamburger and fries. We sat a bit outside with Apolinar and 15 dogs came to say hello(one after the other, ok sometimes two) and then we went to sleep. We slept like babies 😊Læs mere
Day 39, Torotoro Tyranno territorium
10. februar, Bolivia ⋅ ⛅ 13 °C
Our day began really early, we woke up at 6.15am to get ourselves to the land were the dinosaurs once ruled the earth! Our minibus driver took us from cochabamba to torotoro in 2.5 hours, lucky cause we thought it took us 4 hours. It was a nice ride, we could a powernap and saw also one of the beautiful landscapes we ever saw! You could see the tectonic erruption all over the place! The last bit of the trip was exciting. The rockformations are just layers lying on top if eachother, so a bit of rocks slided down on the road, so at some point there was a rocky shortcut because on the real road there were too many rocks. Also a bit later there was a piece of the road missing. That had fallen down on the closed part of the road. Adventure time!
We had a nap first, and then explored the village and got entry tickets for the park, and booked a tour for tomorrow. Sadly we are not allowed to hike on our own. Torotoro is a beautiful small village with houses and streets made of the stones from the area around. The village is completely in dinosaur theme and there are dinos everywhere. It is kind of funny to see such a small place with old houses and fancy big dino statues everywhere 🤭 we love it! There are also a lot of street dogs who are all really nice and come to us to get some cuddles 🥰 unlike Boefie in oyantaytambo, these dogs walk away again at some point.
We ate something and also got some groceries for our trip tomorrow. Nina was looking for a cap, because the sun really burns on your head, but all the caps were way too big. Then she decided to get a really ugly, touristic, big hat. If she needs a hat, then pick the ugliest! 🤣 After we hang out in the streets and met a really nice local guy called apolinar who is 58 years old and lived his whole life in Torotoro. We sat with him for few ours with some beers, funny conversations and chewing coca leaves. 😊
Bolivian spanish is different to peruvian spanish. It is a bit more difficult but doable. Slang and stuff! We enjoyed our first day here and went to bed.Læs mere
Day 38, Cochabamba
10. februar, Bolivia ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C
We had no breakfast in this hotel, so we ate waffles with fruit in a cafe somewhere in the streets.
After we ate the fancy waffles (€2,40 pp), we went to look for a bus or minivan to torotoro, it was a bit hard, because they mostly sell it in expensive tours. No luck so we went back to the hotel and asked.
A bit far away was a minivan company, so we went with there with a taxi. It would cost us 45 bolivianos in a minivan to torotoro tomorrow at 08:00. On the other side of street was a barbershop, so Eike went to cut his hair. The guy cut him exactly like Eike wanted and it costed as much as the tiny beer at the concert in La Paz! Awesome, latino flow!
We walked in the city an did a bit of sightseeing. Nina bougt a new pair leg warmers, which were also cheap since it is 28° here 😅 Cochabamba is a much nicer city than La Paz, it is much more green and the climate is more like the jungle, but in the city. We have to say it has a nicer atmosphere. We are still at 2500 meters, but there are palm trees, parrots and sadly also moskitos here. We walked around a bit more and found a vegetarian and vegan restaurant and had a very nice meal with different things. We ate a cherimoya ice cream and walked a bit more for the digestion. We were very full! We enjoyed the evening sun and walked back to the hotel, where we wrote some pinguin stuff.
We went out again to get some water and food for the road tomorrow, and we also went for a drink in el baron rojo. There, the bar tender asked us for some songs to play in the bar, so we kept it a bit calm and wrote down ace of spades, jailbreak, i walked with a zombie and painkiller.
They played them all! We sat down at the table of Abath and Niki and we learned a new dice game. It was a bit like yatzee, but different, because the eyes on the otherside count too. We felt like staying more, but we decided to go to the hotel because we have to get up really early tomorrow! Eike met some punks from argentina and hung around with them for a bit.
We felt a bit sad that we spent so much time in La Paz and so little in Cochbamba.Læs mere
Day 37, travelling to cochabamba
9. februar, Bolivia ⋅ 🌙 20 °C
Again we missed the hotel breakfast 🤣 and checked out around 11:30. We walked few meters around the block to the main street and took a taxi to the bus terminal. It was not so far away, 20 min with the taxi but mostly up the hills so it would have been tough to walk with our backpacks. At the terminal we had to wait 3 hours till the bus was going, so we grabbed first a coffee and a baked bread filled with cheese for breakfast. We also got some cheese empnadas for on the way, because the bus ride would take 7 hours. Nina finally found some playing dices with a nice playing cup (only €2,40!) So we can play yahtzee! Then we waited some more untill the bus came. On the way we had to stop somewhere because a woman REALLY needed some coca leaves. The bus stopped a few more times for no reason. Around 19:00 we had a break. The driver really needed this, because he had to avoid all the big put holes in the road 🤭 Eike got a HUGE bag of chips, because it was the only one they had. There was also a giant pig walking around the parking space. We went on our way again and it got dark. Next to the road there were signs to watch out for llamas crossing the street 🦙 we sadly didn't see any. The stars were amazing to see, because it was so dark. We got stuck behind some trucks, and ten hours later we finally arrived in Cochabamba. It was not difficult to find a taxi that took us to our hostel, and luckily someone still opened the door for us. Time to go to sleep!Læs mere
Day 36, last day La Paz
9. februar, Bolivia ⋅ 🌙 21 °C
We were lazy today and left the hotel around 12. For Brunch we had really nice pancakes, yoghurt with fruit, and some fancy hipster coffee special brew 🤷♀️
We ate everything and went on our way to the cable cars (seilbahn, kabelbaan) of the white line. We went all the way to the end and enjoyed the view. Here we also saw crusty the clown selling doughnuts 🤭
The museum del revolucia was also here and we were lucky we could still go in, because it was supposed to close in two minutes. On the first floor there were modern paintings that had nothing to do with the revolution, and in the basement there were only busts of people with hardly any background story. There was also a bust of jesus 🤷♀️
So we were quickly done here and went outside. There we saw the Catfe, a restaurant and bar with cat decorations and glastonbury concerts playing on a tv. First we wanted to drink a beer (Huari) because eike didnt drink that bolivian beer yet, but unfortunatly the owners were waiting for the beer delivery. So we got offered an other beer called Taquiña, as the beer would come in 20 minutes. Its a maiz beer which was also quite tasty. (Nina and eike are unsure if they had another one. Nina says we were waiting for an hour, eike says 20 minutes 🤭) We finished it while listen to the music, and then we got a fresh huari beer in a champagne bucket filled with ice 😅 when we finished it, it started to rain, so we decided to stay here and eat something. The people were nice, and so was Mr. Perry the dog with two eye colors. The lady offered real bolivian food, so we wanted it. 20 mins she said... hahaha. 1,5 hour and two more beers later, we finally got our food. It was really nice potato fries with some kind of stew over it, with meat, sausage, onions, and green peppers.
We went to the hotel, because it got dark and cold. We got our jackets, and went to Turno Noctorno, it was open today (we saw it before when it was closed) it had an old 50's hospital theme. We ordered 2 cocktails and heard a lot of modern talking. He did on purpose, because when different song came, he put another one of modern talking on. At cherry cherry lady we left. It costed 36 bolivianos (in total 4 euros), and we got a shot when we left for free. Then we went to Equinoccio, and we had to pay enterance. Two kids told us yesterday they have sometimes metal bands, so we dont know what comes next. The band starts at 00:00 and a tiny beer costs 30 bolivianos, which is expensive (3,60 in euro for 30cl). We drank some beers there and watched the band, which was a latino pop rock cover band. It was quite fun to watch them. The best was the male singer, who looked like he didn't care while chewing gum and looking at his phone 😅 later we think he was new in thw band and had to look up the lyrics. At 1.30pm we left and went back to our hotel and went to sleep.Læs mere
Day 35, La Paz
7. februar, Bolivia ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C
We missed the hotel breakfast, so we went out. We got two big coffees and two sandwiches with fried egg for €2,40. Then we went to the telephone companies office and grabbed a number. We didnt have to wait so long and after half an hour Nina walked out with a Bolivian sim card with internet, so we can finally use google maps here! We decided to take a taxi to the witches market, but it was mainly tourist shops, and three real witches shops. We bought a cuba libre, with real COCA cola. It was not lekker, but also not that bad 😅 there were also dead baby lamas hanging in the witches shops 💔 they are used to set on fire with some other herbs and is supposed to give luck.
We left to get some food. There really are more vegetarian and vegan options on the menu than in Peru, which is nice 😊 we went to the hotel to chill, and booked our next bus tickets and hotel for cochabamba. Then we went out for dinner and decided to try pizza. We were a bit weary because of the disgusting lasagne, but the pizzas were really nice! We also had some home made tiramisu as dessert, which was also not that bad! ❤️ we wanted to drink some beer in a bar, but we had a hard time finding something, so we walked around a bit. We came to a square where different groups were practising their group dances for what we think Carnaval. There was also a beer bar, but it looked not cosy at all, and smelled like food. So we went further on our way. It is also not so easy here to buy beer on the street. We came to a really big kind of market, where they sold miniature stuff, and barbie clothes (including underwear and socks!) , and other different figures and things, from working ants to plants. The further we walked, the more it looked like a fair (kermis). They had many games like table football and mini pool, but also shooting and gambling. It was clear that this stuff was there to throw your money away. Eike tried shooting, which should be easy because it was only 1,5 meter distance, but the game was rigged and it was impossible to shoot straight 🤣 there were also balloons that you had to break with a dart, but the balloons were not blown that much so that would also be impossible 😆 Eike finally found a beer and we took a break. But the market-fair was closing, so we went home and watched a movie.Læs mere

RejsendeJa, veruit de meeste zijn woonflats, en de andere huizen gaan zo ver je kan zien, en verder, over de bergen heen. Er zouden maar 800.000 mensen wonen, maar dat geloof ik niet zo.
Day 34, on our way to La Paz
7. februar, Bolivia ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C
It was not a very exciting day. We had the free breakfast of the hotel, checked out, and went to the bus. After an hour everybody got out of the bus. We thought it was a toilet break, because nobody said anything. But then we had to walk with a soldier around the corner and he made us buy tickets for something 🤷♀️ it was only 60 cents. We then found out that we had to take the ferry, and that the bus was going on its own boat, and we had to take a smaller boat to the other side 🤭 at the other side it was unclear where we would go back to the bus. Luckily we saw it, because the bus would have driven away if we were not there. 1,5 hours later we arrived to La Paz, and the view was amazing! In La Paz it was a bit 'spannend' because the big bus had to make very short and very steep corners, and was shaking very much. It took another 1,5 hours untill we arrived.
We didn't have internet on our phones here in Bolivia, so it was a bit difficult to find the hotel. But we did in the end, left our stuff, and went walking around. La Paz is a very hilly and mountainy city, with lots of small streets, which makes it a little unoverseeable and cramped.
We tried to get a sim card to get internet, but we had to go to an office, but that was closed. We went to eat something, walked around some more, and went to the hotel. We watched movies and fell asleep.Læs mere
Day 33, copacabana
4. februar, Bolivia ⋅ ☁️ 11 °C
We woke up fresh, bit too late for the hotel breakfast. So we went out and got us some pancakes with fruit, jugo and coffee at the lake 😊 we decided to climb the mountain and picked up our cameras first. The beginning of the way was quite ok. But at some point it seemed that the only way up was via a very small and steep path. Nina did her best, but had to turn around because of being afraid of heights, and she saw she was never going to make it 😅 Eike still wanted to go to the top, so Nina was waiting there for him. The way up was really not easy. It was steep and you had to breathe much. It was climbing not walking anymore. But at the Top of the mountain Eike had an awesome view over Copacabana and the lake Titicaca. On Top (4100m) were some inka stuff to see and old men took care of it. But also christian memorials were to see, bigger and more "impressive" then the inka ruins/memorial. Eike spend 20min on top, enjoyed the view, took fotos and gave respect to the inka memorial by leaving coca leaves there. Of course chewing them too 🍃🤤 After 1.5 hours we met again. We walked through the town, but the town was still hungover. Half of all shops and restaurants were closed. Today was the day the people let their cars be blessed, and we saw some trucks who were nicely decorated with flowers for this. We also saw a family with a champagne bottle posing for a picture in front of their nicley decorated car. The car even had a hat! We came to the other side of the mountain that eike climed, and we saw the easy route, which was like stairs and less steep😅 we walked around some more and drank a lemonade from a lady at the lake. We also had three different kinds of empanadas (mushrooms, vegan curry, and cheese, tomato, basilicum), who were really nice. The peruvian people said all the time that they had better food than the people of bolivia, but so far we liked the food from bolivia better, probably because of the vegetables and the vegetarian options😅. We enjoyed the evening by walking by the boulevard at the lake with sun and wind. For dinner we got a traditional food from a lady who was frying pollo and chocle on the street. For two portions not even 5euro. It was really good made. During the day we also got bus tickets to la paz and booked a hotel there. Now we are chilling at the hotel, but not much will happen today anymore 😘Læs mere
Day 32, hangover day in copacabana
4. februar, Bolivia ⋅ ☁️ 12 °C
Since we drank way too much alcohol yesterday, we spent most of the day in bed. Around 16:00 we went out. There was a party going on already since hours, but it was significantly smaller than before. Two of three stages were taken down, and not so many people were partying. I guess everyone had a hangover like we did 🤭 we had a really nice veggy burger with avocado and egg, and we walked a bit around the lake. We got some snacks and went back to the hotel to watch movies. The party outside went on till the early morning, but we couldn't be bothered today.Læs mere
Day 31, the dark virgin of the lake
3. februar, Bolivia ⋅ ☁️ 9 °C
We left our hostel in Puno, after we had breakfast. That included some cereal made of corn. The bus we had today, was not so luxurious as the one we had yesterday, but it was only going to be a 3 hour trip. We drove along the Titicaca lake, to the border of Bolivia. There it took a while for everyone to get their stamps, and around 12 o clock we arrived at Copacabana. The weather was really nice, and the bus stopped practically in front of our hotel. We dropped our stuff and went on our way to find some food. Not far away is the main square, and we saw that they had build three stages there. We decided to drink a beer in the sun, and about 10 minutes later a parade started! It was a little like the one yesterday in Puno, but smaller. We managed to order a small sandwich, which was lucky, because also here a lot of places were closed because of the celebration of the dark lady of the lake (the virgin candalaria, a mix of christian and traditional religion). After a while the parade was over and the dancers drank some more beer (they also drank during dancing in the parade), and the parties at the stages slowly started. It was really loud and chaotic, because the stages were very close to eachother 😅 Me and Eike went to look at the biggest stage first, but then we went to another one, where they partied a bit harder. There we drank and danced with some of the blowing instrumentalists of one of the bands. They all wanted to have pictures with us, and then other people also wanted pictures with us 😅 After a while, a lady (Sandra) who was a dancer in the parade, wanted to dance with Nina, so she did. Eike joined too and it was really fun. The bolivians can drink a lot! When it got a bit chilly the dancers went home to change into a bit warmer clothes. We met Sandra again and we went to another stage. There we danced and Nina ended up dancing with Sandra on the stage 😅 after a while we went to the third stage where it is quite possible that we were filmed and were on bolivian TV 🤭 it was quite a thing that we were there, because the singers of the bands on the stages always said something about us. And all the people who wanted to make pictures with us too. We were the only tourists partying 🤷♀️ after a lot of dancing and beer, we went to the hotel, but it was closed... we banged on the door, but nobody would open. We thought we had to sleep outside, but it was very cold. After 2 hours a guy came, who also was staying at the hotel. He tried knocking first, but nothing happened, so he then just pulled the roller shutter up, and we all finally got in!Læs mere
Day 30, stopover in Puno
2. februar, Peru ⋅ ⛅ 8 °C
We woke up early, to check out and take the bus to Puno. The bus was very fancy, with seats that almost turned into beds, and screens with movies. We slept a bit first, because our night was short. After a while we woke up and saw that we were very high. The altitude app said 4273 meters! The landscape was really nice. There were no more trees and the glaciers were much closer. We saw many cows, sheep and huge herds of llamas. After 7 hours we arrived in Puno at 3818 meters. Nina's childs dream came true when she finally saw the titicaca lake! The funniest name in the Atlas 🤭 we stepped out of the bus and it smelled like farts 😅 we arrived at the hostel, left our bags and went out to eat something. For some reason everything was closed, but we found one restaurant that still served. We didn't know how it worked, so we ordered two plates of fish and some rice. We asked the guy if it was too much but he said it was ok. He even said rhe rice was for one person, but we decided to only take one plate. When he returned we got two plates of cold fish, soaking in lemon juice. It completely ruined the fish and it was not so nice. Then the rice came, but i don't know who could eat that plate alone. It was so much! The rice was nice, but the fish is on a shared first place of most disgusting food we ate, together with the disgusting lasagne in Pucallpa 😅 we went to walk around a bit to make the food go away quicker, and we stumbled on a huge parade. We walked in somewhere in the middle and couln't even see the front of the parade. It is the 1st of february, and marks the beginning of carnaval. For this specific parade, traditional dancers come from all over peru to dance in the parade. They all wear their own traditional clothing. There was also one group that had some people dressed as colonists? We don't know what it had to portray exactly, but Nina wants to try and find out. It was very interesting.
There were also children dressed as alpacas and grown people dressed as llamas. Many of the people in the parade were already quite drunk, and dancing was a bit hard for them 🤭 after an hour a really really dark cloud came in, so we decided to go to the hostel. There we watched a movie and went to sleep early, because we take a bus to Copacabana, Bolivia!Læs mere
Day 29, last day in Cuzco
1. februar, Peru ⋅ ☁️ 7 °C
After a nice sandwich at the nice lady's bakery, we went on a trip to Area 21. It was about half n hour with the taxi up the mountains. On 21 june, 2021 there was aparently a first sighting of a UFO and contact (whatever that may be) 🤭 in this place, so they put up a bunch of alien statues here. It was really fun to walk around and the view from here was amazing. Nina downloaded an altitude meter and we saw that we were at 3800 meter! After about 40 minutes we saw everything and went back with the same taxi that was waiting for us. Gracias Carlos! He took us to the plaza de armas, and asked us to eat something, "no nececito comer aqui, nosotros mucha gusta cerveza por favor!" So we drank beers and sat a bit in the sun. Then Nina realized we were looking at dutch flag all the time. Aparently they had bitterballen, so we wanted to see if they had kaassouffle's too. We went inside to local, but it was a "different" to go inside. 2nd floor. You had to go around 3 houses and do a left right swing, and you got there. They didn't have kaassouffle's (ofcourse not, why would they put something vegetarian on the menu?), so we tried the bitterballen. They were actually not that bad, but the mustard was so so. It was happy hour, so we drank a cuba libre, and after that we went to the hostel where Kuki worked. It is an expensive hostel. One night in one bed in a dorm room costs as much as our hotel room for two with our own bathroom. The atmosphere is nice though. We watched some UFC, ultimate fighting championship, but we missed the main fight because the bar was closing. We saw at least seven fights. But before the bar closed, eike took part in a local drinking dice game. Let's say 5 people play, then those 5 people have 3 tries to throw 4,, 5, 6. If someone doesn't manage this, this person has to pay 5 shots. But if everybody throws 4, 5, 6, then it goes on to the next round, untill someone loses the round and has to pay all the shots from all the rounds 😅 when you drinknyou say: arriba, abacho, el cento, el sexy moviomento! And then drink. Eike didn't lose, but Kuki did 🤭
end of story. It was raining very hard when we left, so we took a taxi. We packed our bags, because tomorrow we have a 7 hour bus to Puno., on our way to Bolivia!
PS: it was raining earlier on the evening too, and the thunders were so loud, a deaf person could hear it. The whole building was shaking.Læs mere
Day 28, cuzco
31. januar, Peru ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C
The morning was a bit slow, because we felt the beers from yesterday. We went to eat breakfast at our favorite breakfast place with the nice lady. Then it was time for Nina to get her forever memory of peru. Today the little baby cat Artemis was there, and the son of kuki and his cousin, so Eike had something to do when Nina was getting tattooed. Artemis really liked Eike and was miauing loudly when Eike tried to put him down 😅 so Eike had cat paralysis (when you cant move because a cat is on your lap). Two hours later Nina's tatoo was done. Nina is really happy with her tattoo, kuki did a very good job. After the tattoo session we went back to the hotel. We took it easy today, so we only had dinner (pasta, it was nice, but an italian would have found it disgusting. It was more peruvian-italian fusion), got some snacks, and watched movies.Læs mere
Day 27
30. januar, Peru ⋅ ☁️ 5 °C
The breakfast at this hotel is worse than the breakfast in the hardcore cheap hostel in iquitos 😅 but it was nice to get something to eat and a coffee anyways. Eike had a tattoo appointment at 11, that got postponed to 12, so at 11:30 we went to get a second breakfast at a coffeeshop where the lady is really kind and loves to talk to us. Its already the second time we have been there. Manana tambien! Muy rico. She knows how to make nice food with the ingredients of bread. After we ate a nice vegetarian sandwich and another doughnut we went to kukis tattoo place.
2 hours later eike got his perfect forever memory of peru! Gracias kuki!! When the tattoo session was done we went around the corner in our hostel. Haha. Perfekt!
We took some rest and watched a movie. Meanwhile the water in our room didnt work for hours. Haha.
At 19.00 we went out for some dinner, because we really needed energie. We only had breakfast twice till then. A lady asked us if we want to go to this fancy reastaurant. We said that is was too expensive and then she showed us a menu for the poor people. Hahahahah. It was the most fancy 3 course dish we ate. Potato salad first, chicken and fries next and for dessert ice cream and una ensalada de frutas. It was really fancy but delicious. We left to get some drinks with kuki, but nina had to get some money first. For some reason her bank card is suddenly not functioning anymore 🤷♀️ so eike got some money and we went to kukis other work. It was a tattoo stand at some really fancy hostel, where one bed in a dorm room costs as much as our private hotel room with (shitty) breakfast 😅 we had a good time hanging out with the cuzcokian people. We met a guy who's real first names are Mao Stalin 🤭 he is a really kind person. We also met mike, another peruvian guy from lima who loves dinosaurs like eike. He has also a megalodon tooth around his neck. Eike licked it immediatly. He also told us the places to be in bolivia for the dinosaur stuff! After drinking a bit too much (nina is getting her forever peru memory tomorrow, and kuki has to work tomorrow to give nina her forever memory), we all walked home together. Kuki told us on the way back some more inka history of cusco... so to say fuck the spanish colonist people back in time. The churches in cusco were build on top of the inka temples. So everybody should forget about their beliefs and switch to christianity. Immagine! Under the churches on the pics you can see, are temples everywhere. Catacombes!
We had a really nice and unforgettable evening again, see you tomorrow!Læs mere
Day 26
29. januar, Peru ⋅ ☁️ 7 °C
We left Ollantaytambo with a shared taxi to Cuzco. We took a different route and saw some big rocks that had broken off the mountains and had fallen on the road. We could pass them and had no road blocks luckily. We arrived in Cuzco, and felt that it was higher than Ollantaytambo, because the air was thinner. We had less problems with it than when we arrived the first time here, so it was a good choice to stay in Ollantaytambo first. After we checked into our hotel (which happened to be somewhere on a hill 🤭), we went to explore the city a bit. We also got our free drink at the irish pub 😁 The city is very touristic and there are a lot of people who want to sell you stuff, but it is all the same stuff. 20 different people a day want to sell you the same drawings that they all made at the art academy. It seems like the art academy is more like an art factory. Eike contacted a friend from Teo (we met him in lima), and made an appointment to see him about a tattoo. Tomorrow at 11:00 Eike has an appointment again. We walked around in the city some more, and when it got dark, the city looked even more amazing. All the lights around on the mountains looked like christmas. But it got quite cold, and we were tired too, so we grabbed a sandwich on the way and went back to the hotel, where we watches some movies.Læs mere
Day 25
27. januar, Peru ⋅ ☁️ 12 °C
We were supposed to leave Ollantaytambo today, but we didnt see any ruins from up close yet. Our plan was to look at the big ruins in town, but our hosts were going on a hike to ruins somewhere else, and asked if we wanted to join them. It sounded great, so we decided to go. We took a short bus ride first, and then we started climbing a mountain. The road was tiny and steep. Eike had no problems, but nina didn't get so much air. We stopped a few times, but we kept going. It is weird. You get out of breath really quickly with this air, but when you take a break, it also doesn't take so much time to get your breath back. When we were at 3600 meters, we finally reached the ruins, and the view was spectacular. We could explore the whole area. It was amazing. No tourists around, just us and one local who took care about this ancient place! We spent there one and a half hours. Ate some chocla and drank some coffee we took. We took also coca leaves with us, to chew and offer them to the spirits of this holy place. The way down went a lot easier, also for nina. We did not take the bus back, but walked next to the river, past beatiful mountains, and more ruins. The ruins are really everywhere around. There must have been so many people living here in the inca times. Masters of architecture, incredible. After 15,5 km we arrived at the town again, ate somethin, and went back to the hotel. No dogs were following us, but it started to rain. The rest of the evening we stayed in the hotel, relaxed, and had bread with cheese and tomato for dinner.Læs mere
Day 24
27. januar, Peru ⋅ ☁️ 12 °C
Waking up with a hangover on almost 3000 m altitude is something different! 😅 But we were hungry and had to go into town. We sat down in a restaurant, and had 3 dogs around us and under the table 🤭 when we were finished eating, we went back to the hotel to chill a bit more, but one of the dogs really liked us. REALLY liked us. He followed us everywhere, and he followed us all the way back to the hotel (30 minutes walk). Our neighbors have a dog that 'our' dog was really scared of (he made some sad noises), and he was hiding behind us. We didn't want to leave the dog there because of this, so he went with us into the hotel courtyard. We didn't know what to do with the dog, so we chilled a bit with him. He was really enjoying himself, but we had a hangover and wanted to chill too 😅 So we decided to bring him on his way to the town. Every time he was a bit further away from us, we turned around and started walking back. But the dog was not easily fooled, and he always came back. At some point he also didn't want to walk ahead anymore and kept walking next to us. We had to walk all the way back to the market place in town, where we first met him, and then we finally could shake him off in the chaos of all the people and other dogs. It was really sad to do it this way 😭 we wished we could just have told him. 💔 we quickly went on our way back, and then along the way 4 or 5 other dogs started following us. We didn't give them attention, so luckily they all left at some point. At the hotel we watched some movies and had a rest. In the evening we went carefully to town again to eat, looking around behind our shoulders hoing our dog friend 'Boefie' would not follow us again. We didn't see him. Then we went to sleep.Læs mere
