Veszprém – The City of Queens

Veszprém is one of Hungary's oldest cities, perched on rocky hills overlooking the Séd Valley. It is known as the "City of Queens" because, from the Middle Ages onwards, Hungary's queens were traditionally crowned by the Bishop of Veszprém, and the city's bishops enjoyed the unique privilege of anointing the queen.

The city's historic Castle District is home to medieval streets, churches, and palaces, including the cathedral dedicated to Saint Michael. Over the centuries, Veszprém played an important role as a religious and cultural centre and has survived wars, Ottoman occupation, and rebuilding.

Today, Veszprém is celebrated for its well-preserved old town, vibrant arts scene, and proximity to Lake Balaton. In 2023, it was named a European Capital of Culture, further cementing its reputation as one of Hungary's most charming and historic cities.Read more
