Short history of Piestany

Piešťany is Slovakia's most famous spa town, renowned for its healing thermal springs and sulphur-rich mud.

Its history stretches back to prehistoric times, but the first written mention of the town dates to 1113. For centuries it was a small agricultural settlement on the Váh River.

Everything changed in the 19th century, when the hot mineral springs began attracting visitors seeking treatment for arthritis and other joint conditions. Under the ownership of the influential Winter family, from the late 1800s, the spa was transformed into an elegant European health resort with grand hotels, parks and promenades.

During the early 20th century, Piešťany became one of Europe's leading spa destinations, welcoming royalty, artists and politicians from across the Austro-Hungarian Empire and beyond.

After World War II, under communist Czechoslovakia, the spas were nationalised but continued to operate as an important medical rehabilitation centre. Since Slovakia became independent in 1993, Piešťany has modernised while preserving its historic spa character.

One of the town's best-known symbols is the Statue of the Crutch Breaker, representing patients who recover so well that they no longer need their crutches. It's a fitting emblem for a town that has welcomed people seeking healing for over a century.

Today, Piešťany combines historic spa architecture, peaceful riverside walks, cafés, cultural events and wellness tourism, making it one of Slovakia's most visited destinations.Læs mere
