After 24 hours in planes and an airport, we make it to Copenhagen. We have slept a bit so not too tired.

It is 27 degrees, very unusual in Denmark, and locals are out in it and loving it.

  • Roskilde Viking Museum

    June 26, 2019 in Denmark ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

    Truly amazing museum.
Steve didn't want to go but was very pleased he did.
6 Viking ships were recovered from the fjord mud and have been reconstructed. They were scuttled around 900 years ago to block of a passageway to prevent enemy ships coming to attack them.
Roskilde used to be the Danish capital.

  • Odense

    June 26, 2019 in Denmark ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

Odense is the home town of Hans Christian Andersen, the author of all the famous fairy tales.
I saw the H C Anderson museum 2 years ago, Steve wasn't interested so we explored the town on foot, had a beer on the street and enjoyed the weather.
    We're in a nice hotel.

    June 26, 2019 in Denmark ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

We found a street food place-it was great. Storms Pakhus is an old warehouse converted to undercover food hall.

We also found an Aussie bar.

    June 27, 2019 in Denmark ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

Next stop was Vejle where Ruby, our niece, is living on a student exchange program. She's been here since January and leaves in December.
She met us in town and showed us around then we had dinner at her host family.
Very lovely evening and Ruby looked very much at home there.
Host dad, Jean Pierre, drove us back to hotel via the Deer Park

After Legoland we go back to our hotel to pick up our gear and train to Aarhus where Thor and Karen pick us up.
For Maree, it's like coming home, this is my 3rd time back.

As usual Thor's family make us very welcome.
Thor cooks us a lovely BBQ for tea.
Ib is away in Bonn, Germany but due back tonight. Nanna is in Copenhagen visiting her grandma. So it's just us 4 tonight.

Karen and Ib and 2 grandsons, Hugo and Albert, are already at the mill.
We relax, check out the building going on and Thor and the boys cook a second BBQ tea. They did very well.
Then around 10 pm, as the sun was setting, we drove back to Aarhus.

  • Moesgaard Museum

    June 30, 2019 in Denmark ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

A very impressive museum. Lots of interactive exhibits. The Big Man, a preserved body found in a bog.
Part of one exhibition, how we honour and remember our dead, are the Australian Aboriginal mob from Gupuwiyak in North Eastern Arnhem Land, Northern Territory.
Also, the main exhibits are the Danish and how they lived through all the different ages up until now. Excellent. It is the second time I've seen it but still find it interesting. It's the first time Steve has seen it.

  • Hanging out with Thor

    June 30, 2019 in Denmark ⋅ ⛅ 28 °C

Today Thor took us to Moesgaard Museum and then a lovely lunch close by. Then for a swim. It is 28 degrees, very much a heat wave here. I've swum in Denmark! The water was a similar temperature to home.
After that Thor took us to his apartment for a coffee and a bit of a drive around Aarhus.
Then back to Karen and Ib's for another BBQ tea made by Thor. He loves cooking.

  • Exploring Aarhus

    July 2, 2019 in Denmark ⋅ ⛅ 13 °C

Walked into town, 5 km, this morning along the stream past "home".
Met Thor at train station where he had picked up a hire car for 2 days. He used Gomore, which is a platform where you can hire private people's cars and is much cheaper.
Firstly, we drove out to Ikea as Steve had never been to one. Thor said "I've never been to Ikea as a tourist attraction 😂!"
We then walked around Aarhus central streets and had lunch at a Street Food warehouse.
Then home for a snooze before going to Malte's for tea.

  • Birthday tea with Malte

    July 2, 2019 in Denmark ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

We went to Thor's brother, Malte's place for tea tonight. He and his wife, Mia, have a 3 week old baby, Mice (pronounced Mesa) .
Mesa was born at home, with little birds chirping. The birds are Mice birds, hence her name 💕
They gave Thor a present and a cake for his birthday tomorrow. They sing a traditional Danish song, use Danish flags and also sing Happy Birthday, although the Happy Birthday may have been for our benefit.
We also sang for Steve and Thor's sister who has her birthday on the 4th!

  • Berlin by Flixbus

    July 4, 2019 in Germany ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

9 hours on a bus. Wasn't too bad actually. You must take your own food though.
Thor and family suggested we try the bus as it's cheaper and more scenic than the train.

  • HOHO bus and boat

    July 5, 2019 in Germany ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

East and West Berlin are now one city but you can still see the difference. Old vs new.
There looks to be a lot of gold featured on the statues and old buildings too.
We did the Hop on hop off bus and canal cruise, which was great for am overview. We got off at Alexander Platz and Potsdam Platz for a look around.
Berlin is a lovely city, a third of it is national parks and very green. Also pretty confronting with all its history too.
