    Off to Fiji

    May 17, 2019 in Fiji ⋅ 🌬 26 °C

From Flinders to Melbourne to Nadi to Beqa Island in 1 day.
We leave Flinders with Sharp Airlines then spend the afternoon at Jimmy's. We meet up with Jimmy, Lauren and Will, 5 of us make up "Team Crawford ". Brian and Leanne call in to drop off some dive gear for the others to pack, I have my own.
We head off to airport and meet the rest of the group, some we already know, some we don't.
We leave around 11.30pm so we all should sleep on the plane. Some do, some don't, I didn't 😢.
After 4 1/2 hour flight we get in around 6am local, and get on a bus for a 3 hour drive. Half way there we stop at Sigatoka for lunch and a souvenir shop look.
Back on the bus to Pacific Harbour for a 1 hour boat ride to Beqa Island resort.
We get a beautiful welcome from the Fiji staff.
I haven't slept since we left Flinders and not functioning too well. Settle into room then have a nap.
Explore in the arvo, get to know people and then a lovely sleep.

  • First day diving

    May 18, 2019 in Fiji ⋅ 🌬 25 °C

    Carpet Cove and Pearl Point.
We do 2 dives in the morning and the afternoon free for other activities like exploring the island, visiting villages or just chilling in the ☀
We are sharing this resort with 2 other dive groups from America.
In the afternoon, we play a game Jim and Lauren brought with them, a Scandiniavian game with wooden pegs similar to Bocce called Kubb. Was a real hit with the Americans and locals

  • Day 2 diving

    May 20, 2019 in Fiji ⋅ 🌬 26 °C

Today we didn't take photos as I forgot to charge one camera and think I drowned the other :(
Again we had 2 dives in the morning. Jimmy and Ed didn't join us as they were too hungover. Adrian and Will came but was a tad seedy !
In the evening we were treated to the Beqa Island Firewalkers and serenaded at tea by the locals

  • I join the girls and see Suva

    May 21, 2019 in Fiji ⋅ 🌧 24 °C

There are 3 wives of divers who don't dive. They do other things.
Today on offer is a day trip to Suva so I forgo the diving and have a day with the girls and our lovely guide, Joseph.
We do a sight see of Suva then some free time. I go see the food market and then find a building where locals have stalls and sell supposedly handmade souvenirs. I buy a few, much cheaper than in the shops.Read more

  • Suva Museum

    May 21, 2019 in Fiji ⋅ 🌧 24 °C

A visit to the Museum was fascinating. Some of the girls "just wanted to shop" and didn't really want to go but they were happy they did. Got to have a bit of a shop there anyway

  • Shipwreck dive

    May 21, 2019 in Fiji ⋅ 🌧 24 °C

While I was in Suva, the rest did another reef and a wreck dive, an old Chinese fishing trawler that was sunk as it was poaching in Fiji waters

  • More sharks

    May 22, 2019 in Fiji ⋅ 🌙 24 °C

We did 2 dives with them. 20 metres down, directly under the boat. There were many species of fish including a few different sharks. Tiger, reef tip, bull-nose sharks.
Towards the end of the 2nd dive a feed bin tipped over and there was a fair feeding frenzy - a bit scaryRead more

  • Waterfall hike

    May 22, 2019 in Fiji ⋅ 🌙 24 °C

In the afternoon, after the shark dives we boated around to a village to hike up a hill or 2 to get to a lovely waterfall. It was a pretty slippery track so we all had a few tumbles and got pretty muddy by the end. Pretty waterfall and very refreshing for the hike back.Read more

  • Last full day

    May 23, 2019 in Fiji ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

Steve has been having so much fun, he's done all dives even though originally he thought he wouldn't. Steve said this dive was one of the prettiest and he is getting used to using the camera
I decide to not go diving again and just enjoy the islandRead more

  • Snorkelling and chilling

    May 23, 2019 in Fiji ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

A few other people take the day off diving and enjoy the resort too.
The snorkelling is just off the beach and there are a few concrete statues to be discovered , I found a few.
I was amazed at how much life there is still in only about 30 cm or less of water, the tide was going out on 2nd snorkel and it was so low I couldn't swim anymore but the fish life was still plentifulRead more

  • Last night shenanigans

    May 23, 2019 in Fiji ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

Last night at our lovely resort with our lovely locals. We get to see and participate in a fireshow, conga line, general good time.
Jim hops over the bar and takes over the DJ job.
Some of us jump in the pool, clothes and all.
We drive the Americans mad with our noise.
    Still in bed by 11-ish

  • Beqa Lagoon

    May 23, 2019 in Fiji ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

Beqa Lagoon is a lovely resort with beautiful locals looking after us. "You are part of our family", we certainly felt that.
Everything is "Bula" when you see them. Even in Suva the locals would call it out.
Most of our group got pretty attached to 1 or 2 of our dive team or activity leaders. They knew their names but I never did, they all seemed to be called Joe!!
I think they enjoyed us Aussie's as well. Our head dive master is actually an Australian.
When we left Steve and Jimmy became Facebook friends with their special people. Jimmy is actually going to have a baby named after him!!!

  • Sad last day

    May 24, 2019 in Fiji ⋅ ⛅ 28 °C

In the morning some of us walk to a nearby village to get last minute souvenirs. Steve hasn't been to a village except the one we walked through to get to the waterfall, now he feels like he's done everything.
Around lunch time we leave and our locals sing us off, very sad actually.
We were given a hibiscus flower, if you throw it in the water on your way out you are destined and welcome to come back again.
After an hours boat ride we bus to Nadi airport via Sikatoga again. Our flight is delayed slightly as plane needs changing over.
After a 4 1/2 hour plane trip we say goodbye to our fellow travellers until next year and pop over to the Airport hotel for the night.
A very enjoyable week , not long enough
