  • Ramadan

    30 mars 2023, Marocko ⋅ ☀️ 35 °C

Ramadan, the ninth month of the Hijri calendar (a lunar calendar), is considered the holiest month in the Islamic faith. Through stringent fasting, discipline, introspection, and prayer, Muslims elevate their level of spiritual and physical submission to Allah, express their gratitude, and seek his forgiveness.

It is believed that during this month Allah revealed the holy Quran to Prophet Muhammad through the angel Gabriel. As a way of honouring this auspicious period of time, Muslims abstain from eating, drinking, smoking, any form of violence, anger, and also husband-wife intimacy from the breaking of dawn until the setting of the sun. Reading the Quran and making a charitable donation (Zakat-al-Fitr) are also encouraged.

The beginning of Ramadan is subject to the sighting of the moon.
On the 29th day of Shaban, the moon sighting for Ramadan 2023 took place. The moon sighting date for Ramadan 2023 varies in each country because the Shaban month did not begin on the same day in every country. In Morocco, a moon sighting this year was held on 21 March 2023.

    Ramadan in Morocco

A typical day of Ramadan in Morocco begins with the nafar, that is the town crier blowing the horn to wake up families for the pre-dawn meal. After the iftar, the sounding of a cannon marks the start of the day-long fasts, and after sunset, zowaka, an air raid siren alerts Muslims that they may now eat and drink.

Moroccans head out to nearby mosques for the tarawih and tahajjud prayers. During this holy month, extra congregational prayers are also held for people to read the Quran and devote themselves to Allah.

Laylat al-Qadr, which is celebrated on mostly the 27th night of the month is amongst the holiest events in Islam. Families come together for this special occasion and share traditional dinners. This is also the only time when children who haven’t reached puberty fast during the month. Young girls deck up in fine clothes, gold ornaments and put make-up and henna. Boys too dress festively in brand new djllabas, fez and balgha.

In the days leading up to Ramadan, Moroccan women prepare traditional sweets like sellou and chebakia for the entire month. The iftar, or as it is more commonly called, ftour usually consists of tagine—a meat and vegetable stew, harira—a tomato and lentil soup, fried fish, hard-boiled eggs, khobz—a crusty Moroccan bread, pancakes, flatbreads and different sweet and savoury pastries. Dates, milk, juices, and sweets are also served as accompaniments to provide the sugar and energy required for the day.

Families and friends often come together to break their fasts. Community and social gatherings are also held as a gesture of brotherhood.

On my North Morrocco tour Ramadan started on second last day, our leader observed the fasting. We certainly heard the air raid siren at 3.30 am marking the start of Ramadan!

On the Women's tour Chama was also observing Ramadan. It's not only fasting from food but water too. We were very concerned for our Muslim team's health and well being during hiking days. They found it very tough, it has never been done in Ramadan before. Thankfully the days weren't too hot but apparently the rest of us broke the record for drinking the most water bottles on a tour!!

It was interesting and very special to be allowed to be a part of their Ramadan even in a small way.
Our first and last meal with Charma was the Ftour meal.

Fasting is from sun up to sun down so they get up around 3.30 am and have a big feed and lots of drink, then nothing until around 6.45 or whenever sunset is when they break their fast with the ftour (like a breakfast,) and drink. Then fairly soon after they have a proper meal. Lots of shops are shut during the fasting hours but livens up at night once they've eaten and are "allowed" to do stuff.

    31 mars 2023, Marocko ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

    Couscous
Steamed over the cooking vegetables and meat 3 times to get it fluffy. A lot more to the process than that which is why couscous is only done on Fridays when family gets together. You usually won't be offered couscous on other days.

    Weaving
The ladies card then hand spin on the spool their own raw washed wool. They dye it and then weave it, can take months.

    Henna
Usually a woman's ritual, especially pre wedding. These ladies don't do the intricate designs just a mudpack. I never did find out why. Apparently, the feet is for married women. For a deeper colour you sleep in the henna overnight. Apparently, it also protects the skin a bit for work in the fields.

    Dress ups
The last evening the ladies dressed us up in traditional Berber wedding dresses. Had our last Moroccon dancing with Mu-Mu

Farewell tea at a lovely ladies place but we're all very tired, some so much they are nearly in tears, so it isn't as appreciated as it should be.

Women's Morrocan music band. Amazing but loud!!

  • Hola!

    1 april 2023, Spanien ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

End of tour this morning. Some ladies have already gone in the middle of the night, some are staying on for a couple of days.

1 is isolating in a room because she RAT tested for COVID!!

Our door card didn't work when we came back from breakfast. It turned out the lock was the problem so I had my luggage locked in my room, released only 10 minutes before taxi arrived!! Big stress!

Got to airport with 3 hours to spare, found a lovely massage in airport. With argan oil of course.

    Flew with Ryanair.

Picked up by Fiona and David ♥️.
Apartment in Valencia for 2 days before heading south.

Had an Asian meal for tea. Wanted something fresh and light. Yum.

  • Oliva

    4 april 2023, Spanien ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C

Today we drive to Oliva. This town is smaller and quieter and where Fiona and David have given a firm offer on a house.

Firstly we walk a few old town streets to get to Santa Ana's castle and the 12 prayer towers. There is a good view from the top.

Then drive to the area their house is in, get lunch from a bakery, walk the beach and walk 500 metres to the house for a peek.

The owners see and recognise F and D and ask us in for another look and a drink.
They are lovely people, originally from Holland but want to sell to travel.

    It's a lovely home.

Addit: 26/05/2023 - they bought the house and have moved in

  • Gandia old Town and Fallas Museum

    5 april 2023, Spanien ⋅ ☀️ 18 °C

We walk into the main centre and Old Town and back ( over 18 000 steps and 12 Km).

There's a festival in this part of the world celebrating the Fallas. It happened here a few weeks ago. Street parades, overlifesize models representing some satirical theme, beautifully dressed women and girls vying for the best one, finished off with a massive fireworks and fire.

    The History of Las Fallas
Las Fallas is a Spanish festival that dates back to the Middle Ages. The festival celebrates the arrival of spring, and traditionally, giant effigies of paper mache were burned in the streets.

Today, Las Fallas is still celebrated with bonfires, but the effigies have been replaced by smaller statues called ninots. Las Fallas is held every year in the city of Valencia, and it attracts visitors from all over the world.

"The Museum offers you a different experience where you will learn the roots of the Valencian people. You will enjoy the best "Ninots" and the process of creating a falla, you will learn the trade of a fallero artist, unique in the world. You will discover the secrets of dressing a fallera and the typical Valencian clothing, you will experience a “mascletà” firsthand and you will be surrounded by traditional music. Finally we will reveal the mystery of the fire ritual."

Fiona and David saw the festival and said it was incredible.

  • Javea or Xabia

    6 april 2023, Spanien ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

We took a drive down to a coastal town called Javea. Very pretty but it is the place to be apparently. Lots of British have big flash houses here.

We shared a big Paella for lunch by the seaside. It was very nice.

"Javea (or Xàbia, in Valencian) is one of the most beautiful towns on Alicante’s Costa Blanca. In addition to idyllic beaches and coves, it’s also home to Montgó Natural Park, Santi Antoni Marine Reserve, a 15th century fishing port, a long history and wonderful food. And you can enjoy all this in an outstanding climate almost all year round."

  • Adios Espanol

    8 april 2023, Nederländerna ⋅ ☀️ 13 °C

After a "quick" walk in the morning along the Quay and marina we have lunch then drive to Valencia airport.

I bid adios to Fiona and David and board my first flight of 5 planes to get me home to Flinders in 2 days time.

Valencia to Amsterdam with KLM takes 2 1/2 hours., Then a quick 55 minute connection which I only just make with 5 minutes to spare. I'd read it's possible if you walk fast, so I did!

KLM again for a 12 1/2 hour flight to Singapore, cattle class this time 🥴

  • Changi layover

    9 april 2023, Singapore ⋅ 🌙 27 °C

After the quick connection in Amsterdam, I have a long one of 8 hours in Singapore. Not a bad airport to fill in time.

I could have gone and seen the 🦋 Butterfly Garden but I've already seen that twice. I could have gone up and had a swim on the rooftop pool, I even packed my bathers in cabin baggage but it was 32degrees and I couldn't be bothered. Never did find the cinemas.

I did see the Cactus Garden and the Waterlilly Garden, had a couple of cuppas, read my book, tried not to sleep so I sleep on the next flight.
It's a very comfy airport, I found some lounges to lay out on for a bit .

    Boarded for Melbourne 11.30pm

  • Home sweet home

    10 april 2023, Australien ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C

The next leg - Singapore to Melbourne is on Qantas. I have a seat between me and the next person so more comfy. It's an 8 hour night flight so I was hoping I'd get a good sleep but Hola!! I'm still on Spanish time and can't sleep. I watch a couple of movies and just relax.

Into Melbourne 9am, through customs easily then transfer from International terminal to domestic and board Qantas to Launceston at 1230.

Then get Sharp Airlines home to Flinders.

Considering I had 5 planes to catch to get home, I was amazed I got home on time as planned 40 hours later.

When I got home Steve was cooking tea and 2 dogs happy to see me.

Needless to say I was very tired and happy to be home 🏡
