  • Glacier Lagoon, wow!!

North Atlantic Sea with black sand and ice.
Boating around the glacial icebergs in the lagoon.
    Just amazing

  • Big drive day to Akureyri

    5 September 2017, Iceland ⋅ ☁️ 9 °C

We travel inland through the eastern fjords to the area around Egilsstadir where we have a yummy lunch at a guesthouse. Many farms are now value-adding by setting up accomodation and meals.
East Iceland's geography is different. Minerals are different and stone is close to granite so stronger.
Mountains are 18 million years old with no volcanic activity or hot springs
Lots of land slides and rock falls. Closing or changing roads. Certainly keep the road gangs busy!!
Water here is clearer as there's no ash. In places it's a bit murky from the recent rain.
Prince Charles fishing area is around here.
Traces of gold and iron found in the these hills. An Australian company is exploring this.
    Birch- native vegetation
Pine- 100,000 xmas trees required. 50 000 come from region Egilsstadir and 50 000 from Denmark. This is the most forested area in Iceland, 99% is planted rather than self sown.
Egilsstadir is the main major town for regional area.
Into highlands, main territory of reindeer . In 1776 they came from Norway as sheep disease stopped food supply
Sheep mustering time- shearing and probably shedding so lots of sheep are seen in roadsidw paddocks. There isn't always fences so often a few sheep are on or near the road.
The landscape ( and the weather) changes rapidly from hill to hill often. Deserts, waterfalks, forests, steam baths, coast, glaciers.
We visit an impressive waterful called Godafoss or Waterful of the Gods, as translated by Frederick. Paganism was abolished 1000 AD and apparently the pagan king threw all the idols into this watetful and converted to Catholic as was the religion then.
We stay tonight at another farm stay at Akureyri

  • Ever had a beer bath????

    6 September 2017, Iceland ⋅ ⛅ 8 °C

Icecream for morning smoko at a dairy, Holtsel farm, that has value added with icecream
Lunch with the cows at Kaffi Ku cafe is in a glassed area over the fully mechanised dairy. The cows walk themselves into the milking "robot" when they feel full. There was also a robot that swept the hay etc off the floor. Their milk is sold on but use and sell meat from bull calves.

Some farms just grow grass and bale to sell. No other enterprise
Hot springs most places - little towns around that as "free energy"
Bring sheep down from mountains in first 2 weeks of Sept as it may start snowing. The 5th today and feels like it
26000 cows in Iceland all Icelandic breed as not allowed to import due to disease. Divided opinion as this will only lead to inbreeding. Some want to keep the breed pure, others see it as necessary
Saw some belted galloway cows, was controversial at first but have adapted well.

Kaldi micro brewery with much value adding. Used to be fishermen but injury stopped that. Decided to brew so studied in Germany but then realised best brewing was in Czechoslovakia so studied there. All their gear and barley comes from there too- not enough barley grown consistently in Iceland to use local barley. They have a restaurant AND beer spa!! Yes, they have a bath with 15% "young beer" in water and nice smelly oils. Plus beer bath salts and other beauty products. Very clever
Look around Akureyri. 19000 people in Akureyri, 5th largest town by population
walked through the botanical gardens. There airport runway juts right into the causeway nearly joining the road!!

  • Completed the Golden Circle

    7 September 2017, Iceland ⋅ ⛅ 9 °C

We're back at Reykjavik which means we've completed the Golden Circle road around Iceland, with a few detours. Big drive again north to south via the west.
Horse show and lunch at Gauksmyri farm - 5 gaited Icelandic horse, normal horses have 4. The extra gait is calld "Tolt", it has no English translation.
They are 14 hands high but DON'T  call them ponies!! Lots of different colours due to ancient genetic make up. Come from the viking era and originate from Shetland pony, Scottish Highland Pony and Mongolian horse
Icelandic horse, like the cow, not allowed back in if gone out of country therefore they choose carefully the ones to go overseas to compete because they have to be sold there. Therefore also no Icelandic horse championships can be held in  Iceland. They're held elsewhere.

Sheep farm, Bjarteyjarsandur, -1600 sheep, 600 ewes. Most other farms 450 ewes. No predators here. Go into mountains  in May/June then herd them up (muster) September. Lamb in April. Natural mating plus AI about 100 ewes. In winter house them. Slaughter them 4-5 months old as lamb, after that it's called something else. House in October,  shear in November. Muster every 2 weeks for about 3 times. Old law means sheep can graze anywhere. One man in area "King of the Mountain" looks for and organises mustering. This farmer is King.
Icelandic sheep have 2 layers of wool, white wool more valuable so separate. Shear twice a year. He shears own sheep.
Delicious late afternoon tea- smoked lamb, cheese and blueberry pancake. Then, a beautiful song by sister-in-law. Goose bumps and had women nearly in tears.

  • Blue Lagoon

    8 September 2017, Iceland ⋅ ⛅ 10 °C

Meeting and powerpoint presentation with the PR bloke of the Farmers Association of Iceland. Very interesting actually.
Sight seeing tour of Reykjavik (translated as "Smokey Bay"). Today is a lovely sunny day so great for sightseeing and taking photos.
After lunch we go to Blue Lagoon, a geothermally heated pool complex. Nice and warm, very salty and the silica makes your hair thick and scratchy for days.
Farewell dinner at a restaurant in town that used to be a Danish Mill.
An hour after bed I look out the window and see the Northern Lights - Aurora Borealis!!

  • A biiigg long travel day back to Denmark

    9 September 2017, Denmark ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

Awake at 2.30 AM Iceland time to catch the 4am bus to Keflavik Airport. Our flight isn't until 8.30 but others fly out at 7 or 7.30 so we just go woth them. Free bus! Otherwise pay a 50 euro taxi fare 👍
Icelandair flight to Copenhagen takes about 3 hours so we all manage a bit of a snooze to keep us going.
We then catch the right train for a 3 hour ride to Aarhus. So we managed some mire snoize. One thing - when I booked the train I apparently didn't book seats so we were in other people's seats but they were all good about it. Dad did have to play musical chairs for a while!
Thor and his girlfriend Julie picked us up. Sooo good to see and hug my boy again!!! He was just as stoked 💕 Julie is lovely, she lives in Copenhagen and is in last year of nursing. They met in Australia!!!
Thor brought us around to Karen and Ib's place . Nanna was there to greet us, Karen and Ib were next door at a neighbours party 🎶🎵🍻
Nanna, Thor and Julie made us a very lovely meal. Karen and Ib came back around 8-ish. We talked until we couldn't stay awake any longer.
Looking forward to being able to relax and just be in one spot for a while.

Home to relax a little then tea/chat/bed.
Julie is driving back to Copenhagen tomorrow so we say good bye to her. We probably won't see her again this trip

  • Washing and Aarhus library

    11 September 2017, Åbyhøj ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C

This morning we catch up on our washing and just chill. I ring Steve and have a nice chat.
After lunch Karen takes us to look at their new town library. It is very nice, so many little areas to study or read, a section for kids and babies. They were setting up an exhibition about technology aids to help with independent living. That was very interesting
There is also a very clever carpark that takes your car and a lift thing takes it under the building and apparently then "under the sea". We are right at the harbour...so maybe..
It rejected Karen's car "not enough clearance" so she had to park elsewhere. We watched someone else "retrieve" his car - fascinating.
After that we pick Thor up from his place so he can have tea with us.
I'm struggling to fight the "flu" everyone had on the farm tour. Getting into the honey and lemon drinks to try and boost the immune system

  • Sickness and Aros museum

    12 September 2017, Denmark ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

Had a fever and sweats through the night but felt ok by morning. A few periods through the day when the lurgy wanted to claim me but I am enjoying the lemon and honey drinks 👍
Thor took us to one of the Aarhus museums before he had Uni this afternoon. It's modern art so some pieces are quite questionable...."that's art??" ...and some were interesting. There's a huge very lifelike creation, Big Boy. It has been there for a while apparently and an Australian made it. There was also a film piece there by an Australian.
We came back to a lovely soup made by Karen then a rest afternoon. By then I needed a snooze- the flu was getting me a bit.
Nanna made us tea and we had a movie night with Thor. Ib and Thor usually watch movies of a Tuesday night but Ib is away tonight so we are standing in for him 😉
We watched Red Dog with German subtitles!

  • Museum, church and botanical gardens

    13 September 2017, Denmark ⋅ 🌧 12 °C

We go to book train tickets back to Copenhagen on Monday, with booked seats this time! !
Aros (the name of yesterday's museum) is actually the viking name for Aarhus. Visited a small underground viking museum where they actually excavated the exhibits on site in the 60's. Skeleton and all - murdered man
Domkirk-lovely. Built over viking stones when Christians took over but now reference to that in the church. The decorations here are a lot more colourful than others but done in chalk type paint
Also visit the Botanical gardens in big glass houses. Very nice. They have some Australian trees there too.
    Arvo snooze. Getting better.
Ib is back. Thor is in Copenhagen

  • Moesgaard Beach and Museum

    14 September 2017, Denmark ⋅ 🌧 11 °C

Today it's Ib's turn to show us his special places. He takes us for a bit of a tour of Aarhus, some bits we've seen already with Karen but we have Ib's interpretation, plus a few others. Also we go for a chemist run to top up on cough medicine and panadol etc for us with colds. It looks like Karen may have caught it too :(
We go and see Moesgaard Strand, a beach that is very nice and looks as it would be very busy in the summertime. Then we drive through the forest of beech trees to get to the museum. We were here 5 years ago but the museum today was not there then. Then, it was a weekend get together of viking re-enactment people/festival that we could go and visit.
This museum is built into the hill and has grassed roofs that you can walk on. The museum is not just about the vikings, it is an archeological and anthropological museum as well, so many of the exhibits are about other cultures. Aarhus Uni also have something to do with it. Ib has done work there too.
There was an Australian Aboriginal Christmas room!! There were very clever technological interactive stations right through the museum. We spent 3-4 hours but could've spent more.
Home for a late lunch and the usual arvo rest. This cold really makes you tired by the afternoon.
Poor Karen, I feel bad that she may have caught our bug
Thor is on his way home on the bus but is held up by a 12 car accident on one of the bridges so we may not see him tonight

Further east is Egeskov Castle. This is a great complex with castle, outbuildings, gardens, play areas and car and motorbike museums that the owners have collected.

  • Ruins, a Mill and farewell dinner

    18 September 2017, Denmark ⋅ ☀️ 15 °C

We're with Thor again today. We drive to a castle ruin which is a national park now and has a long cobbled causeway out to it. Thor and I walk it. Mum and dad stay at carpark and sit in the sun. Another lovely sunny day.
We then go the short distance to Visoft where they have a holiday shack and are restoring an old Mill. It is heritage listed so has to be done to guidelines. We stayed here 5 years ago and felt the wooden bits could collapse anytime.
Have lunch and afternoon tea there then another tourist drive where there are viking burial mounds
Home for tea and Andreas catches up with us. He came back to Australia with Thor 2/12 years ago and stayed with us.

    Extra battery pack for mobile
Look at the right sign when deciding what time to return!! Departure, not arrivals!
Buying priority on Finnair was well worth the $25. I got straight through the check in and not line up for miles
International simcard. Make sure your handset is unlocked though so you can use any network
