    September 15, 2018 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

Very windy. Down to 1 runway at Tullamarine today.
Into balmy Cairns 28 degrees and a tad humid but not much.
    Settled into The Jack backpackers.
Explored Cairns city and Esplanade as it's probably the only free time I'll have here. Been to Cairns a couple of times now so all good. Not here for a holiday 🛍🎈⛱Read more

  • One course down

    September 16, 2018 in Australia ⋅ 🌙 21 °C

Bit tired today- band played till 2 am-as advertised when I booked. Good music. Only about 3 car lengths between my bed and the massive speakers. Could feel the bass through the bed sometimes!!
Did the Practical Skills course today - plastering, suturing, looking at eyes and in ears. Was very good. Met lots of nice people.
Afterwards, went to the night 🌙⏰💤💤 market, had a feed of Asian and then a Chinese massage.
Big band playing again tonight but not sure for how long being a Sunday. 🎼🎹🎤🎸🥁 this lot don't sound as good as last night's singers

  • Made it to Bathurst Island

    September 24, 2018 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 30 °C

Did PCIS (computerised clinical record system) training for 4 hours this morning. Hooly Dooly - scary!! I think she just tried to show me too much at once.
At 2pm RAHC lady picked me up from the hotel and we then went to Darwin airport to pick up my Remote Educator, Jenny Nolan. We then went to smaller part of the airport to Fly Tiwi airlines ✈
20 minute flight later we landed at Nguiu and picked up by Clinic Manager.
Both lovely people, making me feel welcome.
After settling into our house Jenny and I went for a walk down to the water.

  • First day on the job

    September 25, 2018 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 29 °C

First day- met the staff, all very lovely. Did a drive around of the town, pretty big really with a "highway" and "suburbs".
I have an Aboriginal Health Practitioner who knows what she's doing 👍. I have the Child Health job, loving it.
Glad I have my RE with me to help me through the computer program and helping to orientate me, she's been here before.
After work went to one of the 2 shops- the " New" shop.

  • History

    September 30, 2018 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

Nguiu used to be a Mission. There are a few statues of Mary around the place. The church buildings are still here.
It also has significance in the bombing of Darwin in the war. It was people here who warned Darwin of the planes.
The old clinic is over the road and used to called a hospital.

  • Relaxing weekend

    October 7, 2018 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 33 °C

Update on the resuscitation Wednesday night- family turned his machines off Friday, the community held a Mass for him. I didn't go.
Getting used to the Child Health role, getting through assessments faster now. Started a Growth Action Plan on a child.
I had to tell the Manager I couldn't do 1st on-call Friday night - it stresses me so much I don't eat and just sit on the couch waiting - not good. Apparently Child Health doesn't have to do it anyway. I'm fine with 2nd 😀 though. As it turns out I was crook Friday night, felt better by Saturday lunch time. Feeling good today.
Went for a walk about 4-ish for more photos, still pretty hot

  • My workplace - the clinic

    October 10, 2018 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 34 °C

A few pics of the inside of the clinic. It has woman's side and men's side. It's great that it has a good pharmacy room with an employed Pharmacy Assistant. Also have a resident Clinical Psychologist, Mental Health nurse, 4 doctors-1 or 2 are Registrar GP's. Plus quite a few Aboriginal Health Practitioners.
Some other portfolios are Chronic Disease nurse, Midwife, my Child Health role plus the acute nurses also have some roles like Rheumatic Heart Disease, School Age health, Women's Business. Many visiting specialists come and go too.
It's quite a large, busy clinic.

  • Another nice weekend

    October 14, 2018 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 31 °C

Bought some sprinklers from the shop to green up the lawn now I've found a bit of pressure in the tap.
Also found a paddling pool in the shed, no holes! At midday the water was hot!
BBQ tea at the Area Manager's place with other staff.
Today got into the garden and removed a heap of dead stuff so nice new green leaves can come through.

  • Some tropical critters

    October 19, 2018 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 33 °C

It looked like the wet may be coming but we had one afternoon of huge rain, then back to sunny and dry. It is getting a bit more humid but still very bearable. It could be bringing out the critters though.
The centipede walked over my toes!! Eek!!
The green frog was on my doorstep last night. Lots of skinks lately too.

  • Camp

    October 20, 2018 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 34 °C

Hot sticky night but slept well. There were two turtle tracks 🐾🐾 on the beach when we got up

  • Gone fishing

    October 20, 2018 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 34 °C

First attempt at fishing. I hunted shells on the beach and watched the sunset while the others tried catching Mangrove Jack in the river (with crocs!)
    No luck

  • Gone camping ⛺

    October 20, 2018 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 32 °C

After a week at work, that was disrupted a bit by funeral ceremonies, 4 of us went camping and exploring. Candina, Ryan and Lizzie and me, plus Candina's dog, Ally.
First we went to the Frangipani Cafe ☕️ to have coffee and cake with some other staff members.
We then headed west past the airport to a waterfall at a waterhole you CAN swim at. Was getting pretty hot so was a lovely relief.
Then heading north to Rocky Point to set up camp. Then off bush bashing to explore some beaches you CAN'T swim at because of crocs and stingers, and try to catch a fish. No luck.
Small thunderstorm made camp a bit damp but not for long - still very hot. Nachos for tea by the campfire.

  • Fishing Take 2

    October 21, 2018 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 31 °C

On the way home we bush bashed again and found a beach we drove on. The fisherpeople were looking for the mouth of a river. I went shell 🐚 hunting again, most shells have hermit crabs 🦀 in them. Pretty funny watching shells scurrying along the sand.Read more

  • Exploring

    October 21, 2018 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 31 °C

On the way back we found an abandoned shack, a couple of frill neck lizards Ryan ran down (on foot), then popped back into the waterfall to wash off our grime and have lunch. Lovely
