Another big climb and descent today. Here are some shots from the top. Looks like they have a Stonehenge type rock circle. I have to look that up, read about it once and cannot remember what those are e called.Read more

    April 16, 2025 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C

Spent the night here at the Albergue Casa Baztan. Kind of a crowded situation. Felt sorry for the girl above me as she had top bunk and many bunks don’t even have a ladder! She must have been in great shape and part gymnast to get up there. The snoring wasn’t too bad, but the bag wrestling in other noises did not help to get a good night sleep. Dinner was yummy thin chicken and lots of sides. Tomorrow I should have my own room and will catch up on my sleep. Met a couple of nice guys from Korea, a nice lady from Germany, Holland, and Peppi from Scotland who likes to play his little guitar. And he has the most lovely accent.Read more

  • Eunate church

    April 17, 2025 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 6 °C

Built in the 1100’s! Another Romanesque church. This one octagonal. Had to take a variant off the Camino a couple km to see it.

My first tortilla! Lots of potato and egg for energy. I’ve been making them at home not knowing what that really supposed to taste like but I was close. This town is small and nice. With a very nice bar.Read more

Walked slowly with Yoko, grandmother from Japan, for the last few miles. Said goodbye to her in town. Hopefully she finds a spot in the Albergue gate. She is not reserved anywhere. Tougher walk than expected today. 35,000 steps. 26km. My spreadsheet said 20 km, I did do the longer variant in order to see Eunate church, but I didn’t think it was supposed to add 6 km. Way more uphill than I was hoping for as well. I use the “WisePilgrim” app and it shows profile of the trail but I didn’t soak it in apparently.

This place “Casa Nahia” is awesome. Stocked with food beer and wine and I am going to sleep good tonight. More uphill tomorrow.

  • Azqueta

    April 18, 2025 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C

About 2 more km to go today. Looks like this last bit will be steep. Tiny town of Azqueta has a nice bar. I got a tuna and pepper “empanada” although it is cut from a sheet of a large thin one apparently. Tastes good. Fuel for the last push.Read more

  • Viamayor de Monjardin

    April 18, 2025 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C

I made it! Fitbit says only 26,000 steps and 20km.

“Relive” video shown. Note the landscape is Way More green than what relive shows.

Legs and feet and hips are tired. But otherwise all good.

  • Monjardin to Sansol

    April 19, 2025 in Spain ⋅ 🌧 7 °C

Brrrr. Cold walk today. And some serious mud. I’ve been through the mud before, but today was worse because there was no way around the mud. And it was very slippery. Somehow, I managed not to fall on my butt.

I think it was in the high 30s for much of the morning. I stopped for a nice second breakfast snack at Los Arcos.

Made it to SANSOL around 130. Found a really nice café in this tiny town and they served a big giant burger with really yummy fries too my first Spain burger.

I made it! Very tasty burger here at cafe/bar. Warm in the sun. Cafe video for atmosphere.

Staying in Albergue Karma. It’s kind of funky, maybe a little dusty smelling, but it has character. I even kind of scored a private room since I got here before others. It’s not really private, but there’s no one sleeping on a bunk above me. See video.Read more

  • Logroño to navarrete

    April 21, 2025 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 9 °C

The church here in Navarrete is fancy! Much gold. We had lunch at a bar here in Navarrete that had so many yummy looking items. Lots of locals enjoying the afternoon. Could only try a couple items. And on the way out of Logroño DUCKLINGS!!! So cute!Read more

  • Navarrete to Najere

    April 22, 2025 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 8 °C

We walked for almost 4 hours / 10mi before getting a real breakfast. Good thing I had some nuts and salami things in my bag. Let this be a lesson to me. Always be prepared for some morning food in case there is nothing along the way.

Stopped in Najara for a coffee con leche, breakfast sandwich, and a little fillet of fish of some sort. I was hungry! Six more kilometers to our stopping point of Azofra.

  • Azofra!

    April 22, 2025 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C

Got a room in the tiny town of Azofra. Splitting it with my Camino buddy Don it’s a pension right next to the church. So far, I haven’t heard too many bells. But that could be interesting throughout the night. There is a stork on the top of the church with a big giant nest. So that’s pretty cool. It’s my first stork and nest that I’ve seen so far in Europe.

We walked 14 miles today, the first several miles were right along a freeway. The scenery was nice on the left but freeway on the right. The clouds were threatening to rain, but we only felt a few sprinkles.

The town of Najera we only walk-through, but it had some cool cliffs that look like Arizona Grand Canyon walls.

  • Out of Azofra

    April 23, 2025 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 4 °C

Started by walking 9km to the golfing town of Cirueña where they apparently built too many houses and people did not move there, so there are many empty condos. Also, apparently a quite rude albergue owner who was mean to one of our Australian friends. But the golf course looked kind of nice. Lots of fields, nice trail without too many puddles.Read more

  • Grañón to Espinosa del Camino

    April 24, 2025 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 16 °C

It’s warming up here! Only about 70 but it made for a warm walk uphill in the sun wearing backpack and hat and too many clothing layers. Several pictures from Belorado here which I thought was an extra cute town. Lots of murals and art. 5 storks nests on the church bell tower! Grand Canyon style rock formations.

We made it to La Taberna de Espinosa Albergue in Espinosa del Camino. It is full, but we have beds. The meal was fantastic! 4 courses. Our Australian friend even helped do some of the preparation.
