    Byebye cold but lovely Sverige

    September 15, 2023 in Sweden ⋅ ☁️ 11 °C

We were ice blocks once we woke up in the morning. The heating hadnt worked all night so we had cuddled as much as we could but it still hadnt been enough to keep ourselves warm. However we pulled ourselves together, finished packing everything and drove to the place where we had rented Bro, the van. On the road we stopped for a quick breakfast but since we didnt want to dirty our dishes again we had to be a bit creative and come up with a way to eat our muesli. I admit that it looked a bit nasty but its the naked truth. We dont want to cover up anything here;) At the rental we said bye to bro & got an Uber to the Airport, where we‘re currently sitting and waiting for our flight:)

So, that was our holiday, hope we didnt get you toooo jealous:))

See you (hopefully) soon for another blog:)))

    Traffic disaster in Stockholm

    September 14, 2023 in Sweden ⋅ ☀️ 13 °C

As planned we woke up at 6 and left for Stockholm right after we had packed everything together. We stopped only once for a small breakfast and of course coffee. Nene had a cinnamon bun with gluten, i‘m happy he did, he always tries to forgo good with gluten because of me, so i‘m glad when he doesnt once in a while and gets something really good:) he can enjoy it for the both of us I guess:) When we arrived in Stockholm we drove to the Avici Globe Arena first, to get a view over the city. Nene had been there as a child and wanted to take me there, I really liked it:) Then we drove to the city center and after a couple of attemps we managed to find a place to leave our van. We went to a vintage store called Pop, it was by far the coolest and most exciting vintage store i had ever been in. After checking it out for a while we chose outfits for one another, which was super funny and absolutely sexy as you can see:) Since we didnt have much time that day, we grabbed a segway scooter and drove to the Gamma Stad, the old town of Stockholm. It was funny but also kinda scary and sketchy. We strolled around the old town, drank a coffee, went into shops and eventually made our way back to the van. We had planned on driving to the coast, better known as „Schären“ :) but it turned out to be way harder than expected. It was almost impossible to drive out of the city and our GPS was going crazy (see the video) . At some point we finally made it and got on a highway that led us out of this hell. We had read that Waxholm was quite a nice city to see so we drive there but got quite disappointed. We had expected a cute little village at the sea but it was just some houses, no people and everything was closed. Having no other choice at that point we made fun out of it and drove on. We really wanted to find a place along the coast where we could jump off some stones into the sea but every single road led to a private property or somewhere we didnt want to go. A bit disappointed we looked for a camping for the last night which had showers, water, a kitchen and everything we needed to get the van ready.
On the way while I was driving, I suddenly got the message that the results of the exams were out. After at least 3 mental breakdowns and 2 panic attacks (i’m not even joking) in a row I overcame my fear and opened the website where my grades were shown. Phuuu I passed, thank god. So we had to gelebrate. Arrived at the camping, we popped our bottle of wine and went to the sea where (wohoooo) we foung domr stones we could sit on and „jump“ off:) - the day was saved;) Before dinner we played minigolf, guess who won;). For dinner we finished our leftovers as good as possible and packed our stuff. It was already past midnight when we were finally done. Unfortunately the heating system of our car didnt work so we had a freezing night. Thank god it wasnt that long, since we had to wake up at 7 again to prepare for our flight.

    Rain, birkenstocks and saunafail

    September 13, 2023 in Sweden ⋅ 🌧 17 °C

When we woke up at Wikegårds camp ground we got surprised by a pretty and colourful sunrise. The plan was to leave Öland and drive to Vimmerby and Lönneberga to „visit“ Michel, one of Astrid Lindgrens‘ protagonists in a a series of audiobooks and movies that had really marked our childhood:)
On the way we stopped at Borgholm Castle and in Kalmar, where the famous Kalmarer Union was established by Denmark, Sweden and Norway. As we arrived in Kalmar it was raining and we escaped tried to escape it in a warm and cozy Café where we had coffee and glutenfree snacks (again you see me very happy kn front of the food). Still since we wanted to see the castle we fought our way theough the pouring rain in our Birkenstocks which in the end we could almost wrench out. The castle was very big and the view over the sea and the rest of the city was nice too, even though we didnt see that much considering the weather. We made our way up to Vimmerby and stopped at a small river for lunch where we had salmon, cucumber and philadelphia on crackers. Vimmerby and Lönneberga did not quite meet our expectations. There was a small Michel statue in a hut and as we drove a bit further there were a couple of red houses but it was all pretty deserted. Anyways first we wanted to drive all the way to Stockholm to be closer to the city, but then we found a nice camping on our way which even had a sauna! In order for us to be 100% sure we would get a spot in the sauna we made a reservation plus made a reservation for a nice place for our van right next to the water. On our way we saw the sunset on one side and really dark clouds on the other, it looked as if the world was going to end every second. When we arrived there it was already late but it wasn‘t completely dark yet so we could settle down properly, install everything and have dinner. It was beautiful, the whole camping was decorated with lights, it looked like a magical forest. Nene even managed to light the fairy lights that were hung up around our van:) There weren‘t any people in the camping though or we just couldnt see anybody. After dinner we got ready and went to look for the sauna. There weren‘t any signs or anything so we just started walking around and eventually looked it up on google maps. Nene was really sure that he had seen it so we walked and walked in that direction only to end up in front of a private building which definitely was not a sauna. We walked back and had almost lost all hope as suddenly we found it. However when we got in we saw we had to light the fire ourselves and there was barely any dry wood and just one small lighter. We didnt give up at first but after several attempts we admitted to ouselves that it was quite hopeless, so we walked back to the van. Our mood wasnt the best anymore but we decided to make the best out of the next day and set the alarm very early to arrive at Stockholm before 10am.

Långe Erik and a picnic with a view

    September 12, 2023 in Sweden ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

We woke up at the harbour Stallpläts and now with daylight we even found a toilet. My bladder and me were very relieved. Since it was sunny we made scrambled eggs för breakfast following Nene’s mom’s recipe. They turned out delicious:) We headed to the northern part of the Island and stopped at a sight where people had piled up thousands of flat stones along the coastline. Later on we drove to the „raukar“ where water had dug itsself into rocks and shaped them. For lunch we had a picnic in the sun at a spot we stayed for a while. The last goal of the day was to see the lighthouse called långe Erik at the very northern end of Öland. We even took a selfie with „him“. Even though it had been cloudy most time of the day, at Wikegård Camping, which my aunt had recommended, we were able to see the sunset while we took a quick bath in the sea. After a hot shower and a very tasty dinner cooked by Nene we‘re now super tired and ready to fall asleep:)Read more

    Mystic Aspö

    September 11, 2023 in Sweden ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

After a good night sleep under a sky full of stars Pentti and Britt spoiled us with an amazing breakfast that consisted of omelettes, veggies and self made carrot and oat bread. After getting ready we went to Kivik and Vitemölla, two small fisher villages right at the sea next to where the two of them live. When we got back to their place at about 11 am we thanked them for their hospitality and left for Ahus, where we went straight into the next systembolag to buy wine for our next dinner:)
We made our way to Karlskrona, Pentti had told us about, and took the ferry to Aspö. After 25 minutes we arrived on the Island which was covered with fog. Eventually the fog lifted and we could see some rays of sun in between the treetops. It looked very mystic and a bit creepy. We drove around the Island with our van but stopped several times at viewpoints or small harbours.
After taking the ferry back to Karlskrona we refuelled Bro (the van) and drove all the way to Öland. We stopped twice: once at a river where they fished for salmon and once at Kalmar to eat at Max, a famous burger Place like BK or McDonalds. I hadnt had a Burger in ages so when I heard they had a glutenfree option, I had to get one. We arrived on Öland at the Ställplats in a harbour at 9:30 when it was already dark. We couldnt find a toiled and shower, nor some kind of „check in“ so we just parked our camper, brushed our teeth and fell asleep right next to the sea.

    Moose stew and blueberry cake

    September 9, 2023 in Sweden ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

Our alarm rang early so that after a good breakfast outside we were ready to leave for Lund, famous for the amount of universities. Since we went there on a Sunday morning it looked quite peaceful and even a bit sleepy. We walked around the park, looked at some old and famous buildings and had a coffee. After we had at walked every street at least twice, we drove to Ystad, a city in the southern part of Sweden in Skåne, where we met Pentti and Britt. They showed us around in the small city starting off with the monastery garden. It was very interesting too see, smell and even taste some of the herbs the monks used for making medicine. They showed us the main streets, some typical old buildings and a church, while we were talking and catching up on the past year(s) we hadn’t seen eachother. We were invited to stay at their lovely home over night and have dinner with them. Pentti and Britt prepared moose stew with potatoes which I had never had before and was absolutely delicious. For dessert she had prepared a very tasty blueberry cake, of course glutenfree:) We talked for the rest of the evening and went to sleep in our camper which we were allowed to park in their beautiful garden.Read more

    God morgon Göteborg!

    September 9, 2023 in Sweden ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

After a short drive to Göteborg, where we left our car at a park garage because we had heard that many campers standing along the street had been robbed lately, we explored Haga, the old town. There were many shops including pottery and second hand shops. In the second hand shop we tried on funny things and even bought two items. You‘ll probably see us wearing them one day;) We hadnt had breakfast that morning so we went to a glutenfree „baggeri“ which I really had been looking forward to. We tried as many different things as our stomaches allowed. There was a small hill which we hiked to get the view over the city. We went back to Bro (our van) who was waiting for us in the Garage. 296 kilometres and a nap from Nene’s side later we arrived at Kullaberg. In his defence I have to admit that Nene was the one driving out of Göteborg, which had been very exhausting. There were about 50 highway exits and neither our GPS, nor the traffic signs could help us find the way out of this city, so only 3 attempts and 2 wrong exits later we made it on the right road in direction of Malmö. Kullaberg‘s Peninsula was way more touristic than I had expected so instead of following the normal path with the rest of the people to see the view from above we hiked in our Birkenstocks up to a cliff where the view was even better and where we had some more privacy. Originally the plan had been to drive to Lund the same evening to visit the city and to sleep in a camping nearby but as we drove away from Kullaberg nature reserve, we decided we would take it easy and look for a place closer to where we were and check out Lund in the morning. Turns out this was a great decision because on our way we saw a farmers market where we stopped, drank a cocktail and had dinner. (Don’t worry the one that drove didn’t drink alcohol) The food was amazing and our tummies were really satisfied later on. The day finished off with a perfect timing as we arrived at the camping about 10 mins before sunset so we got to see and enjoy it fully. The only thing that bothered me slightly was that they had a disco on the campground which played super loud music until about 2 am. But hey I guess we‘re on holidays and shouldn‘t let that annoy us:)
We fell asleep eventually despite the loud music:)

    Yearn after Tjörn

    September 8, 2023 in Sweden ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

Before leaving smögen that morning we went on our first swim in the sea. Our van was parket right at a spot where you could easily get into the water and apparently some locals knew that to, therefore we were not the only ones waking ourselves up in the cold water.
The plan was to drive away from smögen to see Orust and Tjörn and then go a bit further until arriving at a camping about 30 mins from Göteborg. The road first led us to a tiny harbour where we stopped, took a ferry called Neptunus and stayed at the other side where we had a small breakfast and observed the water which was full of fish, jellyfish and shrimps. Afterwards we drove over Orust to Tjörn and saw landscapes that really blew our minds. We got up some hills where we had an awesome view over hundreds of small islands with forests which extended all the way to the sea. Additionally we stopped at two villages at the sea, one prettier than the other, decorated by its white houses with the read roofs and the rocky shores nearby.
In Skärhamn we went into a fish shop and bought salmon which we later cooked for dinner AND salmon nuggets, which I already knew (and loved) from my time in canada. They weren‘t exactly the same but tasted as good as the canadian ones. The camping we went to in the evening was a big one with many people, especially families with children, but also permanent „residents“ whose campers stayed there all season long. It was alright for one night even though I personally prefer sleeping somewhere surrounded by nature. The thoughts behind our night stop there was to be able to wash our towels, which after the sauna started having a quite unpleasant smell. Next to where we parked was a small hike which led to a very beautiful view. We hiked up and went back to start cooking our salmon I had been excited for all day. At first Nene pointed out I had left it too raw but shortly after he admitted that it was very tasty. After cleaning we visited to women from Switzerland, Doris and Rita, who had invited us to their camper for a glass of wine when we had tried to park earlier. We had started talking because they had heard us asking ourselves about the direction in which we should park the van. Anyways we went to their small and cozy camper which actually was a pick up truck which had been converted in a small cabin to live in. We talked for a long time and they told us about several travels they had done, from journeys in southern america to trips through the sahara. It was very interesting and the wine was excellent too:)
(Sorry for probably a couple of spelling and grammar mistakes, sweden is so pretty and exciting that I barely have time to write this blog;))

    Wir mögen Smögen

    September 7, 2023 in Sweden ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

As the title says, we liked Smögen from the first moment we saw its colorful houses, when we drove over the rocky hills shortly before reaching the sea. We looked after a parking lot, where we could leave the van and walk around the village only to end up in a shop which had many sports clothes on sale. We ended up buying two rainjackets, and taking funny pictures of us looking like paddington;) The shopowner was very friendly and gave us some recommentadions on restaurants and most important on a small parking lot 5 mins from the towns center where we could park for 12 hours for free. The place was even better than we had expected. After leaving our new clothes in the van, we walked to the village, where we couldnt stop repeating how beautiful it looked. The restaurant the shopowner had recommended, called Samuelsson was right in the citycenter. We decided to order a seafood platter and two glasses of white wine which looked and tasted fresh and amazing. After dinner we visited a light show that took place at the village these days. We payed 15 euros each which was waaayy too much for what it actually was, but we just made fun of it and enjoyed the evening anyways. We hiked on some hills and watched the lightshow from above which made it way more interesting and exciting:) But the most exciting thing was definitely the return home where we found out that the seawater right next to our van was full of bioluminescent plankton! I had rarely seen such a spectacle of nature. However one last mistery remains unsolved… how did we actually find out about the plakton? It‘s up to you to guess;)Read more

On the road to the westcoast

    September 7, 2023 in Sweden ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

The place we had stayed over night was quite expensive but in my opinion worth the money. As I mentioned yesterday there was a sauna, of course showers, but even a kitchen with dishwasher! What a luxury for us who don‘t even have a dishwasher at home in Zurich:) but except for the facilities the view was also amazing and it was right by the water. Later that morning, after having had breakfast, we headed down the small Pensinsula and arrived at Slott Läckö, a castle at the lake Vänern. We left the van, which we had now named Bro (after the first place we had stayed at) at a parking lot and walked around. The castle was pretty but it honestly looked better from further away, thats why we walked along the lake and admired it from there. The next stop on our Trip were the ship locks. There are many in sweden but we were lucky and stopped at a place where we got to see old ones from the last centuries and modern ones that were still being used. Shortly after we stopped at a café for swedish „fika“ (a break from activity during which people drink coffee, eat cakes or other light snacks, and relax with others.) The place even had glutenfree snacks and the coffee was delicious. Finally we were ready and full of energy for the last bit: the final drive to Smögen.Read more
