Ijen and how to avoid the crowds (again)

Lisa and I had to take a night bus from Malang to Banjuwangi. There are many buses that go, but all of them decided to go either 6pm or 7pm. So we took one at 6pm. 1 bumpy ride later, we arrived in Banjuwangi at 2am. There wasn't even a bus station, the guy kicked us out while the bus was in traffic, still slowly rolling while one of the drivers helped us get our big luggage out of the storage of the bus.
Ordering a grab was no problem, as it seemed to be a normal occurence of people arriving here at 2am. He drove us to our hostel and we had a whole day of resting.
Funny enough, we got put into a 4 bed-room and at 11am, after sleeping in, we saw that the other two occupants was a couple that we already met in Malang. Nice!
After they said they booked a tour to Ijen that claimed to have an early start and the group will be the first one on the mountain, we decided to join them.
The tour guide, Qim Qim, picked all of us up at 11pm, and even though our tour went on throughout the night, Qim Qim was displaying 100 percent energy for the whole duration.
It started with a 1h ride to the parking lot, then briefing of our tour. Qim Qim was one of the guides I will remember forever, as his jokes, paired with his professionalism, was lifting the mood of our group all the time. During our busride we also talked to Lena, a french girl also traveling in between jobs like me.
The hike started easy, with only 600m of elevation. We really were the first group to enter, most of the times I was with Lena and Lisa, Rob and Jade a little bit behind with the other people of the group.
We had Qim Qim and Ruffy, Ruffy leading the group and Qim Qim as the last one, to make sure that our group is not split up. We went up to the ridge of the crater in about 1h, before we put on our gasmasks and had to walk 900m elevation down to the blue fire. The gasmask was protecting us from the sulfur vapor, also the goggles that we were wearing.
The blue fire was fun to see. Also impressive as Qim Qim was telling us about the sulfur miners, the people harvesting the sulfur and selling it. The miners harvest it almost every day, with no protective gear. They can carry up to 100kg per load! And also, the average life expectancy is 40-50 years old, which is not much. We also saw some miners and I asked him why he didn't wear a mask. He just shrugged.
As Qim Qim was telling us about sulfur, there was some methane gas blowing over. Qim Qim led us away and then we had to hunch done for a few minutes until the wind turned again. The gas that I breathed in made my eyes water and my throat ichy. Wow!
After that, we went up again, while loads of other people now started their descend. We walked along the crater to a nice sunrise spot and this is where we stayed, drank tea and took nice pictures until all of us were finished. Rob and Jade even had a drone, so I was able to get some of their drone pictures.
Being the first group to arrive, having some fun people around and Qim Qim as our guide, it was an extremely fun and amazing tour, better than I expected it to be!
We made our way down safely to the parking lot and the 1h bus ride back, we all crashed down and slept in our seats, before being dropped off at our hostel.
I even managed to take a shower, give my clothes for washing and eat breakfast before I went to sleep at lunch time and woke up feeling groggy at 4pm.
The rest of the day was spent chilling and researching what to do in the next few weeks. We all used GrabFood to order our dinner.
Wow!Weiterlesen
