  • Munnar.....time for tea

    2 marca 2020, Indie ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

Arrived yesterday internet a bit dodgy hence delay, 5hr zig zag drive, stopped off for a pleasant coffee for 20rupee, all regretted not having the local lunch served on a banana leaf. Mike a little green in the gills saved by one of Andrews mints.....he's eating more than me! Last few miles stunning views. Hotel great built into the hillside, next to the Tamil workers housing slum....that's India. Room on minus 3.....a bit confusing as it's all upside down. Czytaj więcej

  • Tea plantation walk

    2 marca 2020, Indie ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

After a short drive we reached the local tea plantation and met our guide ' Monie'......we then started our 4 hour trek up the steep mountain tracks. He pointed out birds, trees etc. Along the way. Due to the altitude we were all puffing quite a bit. Few pleasant stops ate some passion fruit, green satsoma and the ubiquitous banana.

Wild elephant on the roam only sign of it was some old poo.....thankfully. All felt the 1000cost per person great value esp as hotel charging 3000!

Local lunch at the Ali Baba, Mutton ( really goat ) curry, dahl, CTM .

Chill out this pm. TEA factory tomorrow. Looks like they only use 'waste' tea in tea bags.....let's wait and see

Tonic water refuel thanks to Saleel ( our driver )

  • Tea factory

    3 marca 2020, Indie ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

Interesting tour ( 400 rupee ) around working tea factory, guide a little difficult to understand but we eventually worked out the process; white tea the uber best, then green ,then a series of grades of brown then the twig fibrous remains ( aka the rubbish ) are used in tea bags.

50% chance of seeing elephant today.... not us :(
A bit frustrating as according to the guide a family of elephants visited the petrol station last week.

  • Munnar to Kofiland resort in Thekkady

    4 marca 2020, Indie ⋅ ⛅ 26 °C

Very interesting and twisty driver from Munnar, took about 3 hours and had a pleasant stop by a massive dam, with coffee at 20 rupee each, even splashed our on a Kit Kat. Last bit of drive through the cardomen laden hills.

Lunch at the Bamboo cafe less than £10 for 4...we will be back.

Afternoon boat safari at Periyar tiger reserve ( looks like Tigers don't do paparatzi or tourists ) started off a bit drab but had some great close up sightings of elephants swimming. Linda caught the guides eye and he took some great shots using her phone and a pair of binoculars.

Out for dinner at the Thekkady cafe, popular with locals had ' fish n chips' Masala fried fish with tons of garlic.

Couple of rain showers, frequent power cuts.

  • Elephant trip & Spice garden tour.

    5 marca 2020, Indie ⋅ 🌧 25 °C

Ride, wash/ scrub and then bath with the elephants. Very clean location , elephants very well behaved and seemed content and well cared for. Leela 32 and Meena 35. Getting on off them was a bit of a groin strain but great fun.

Spice garden 1 hr guided walk around organic spice garden,; all spice, pepper, coffee, turmeric, cardamom, nutmeg/ mace. Lovely shop selling good selection of herbs and spices......and chocolate, as it wasn't made from dairy didn't melt in the heat. Varieties included nutmeg, cardamom, ginger and mango.

  • Houseboat day 2

    7 marca 2020, Indie ⋅ ☁️ 24 °C

Spent the might moored in the middle of nowhere, chef conjuring up some amazing meals, digestion seems to be surviving the 3 curries based meals per day.

Linda & Karen hoping for another shopping opportunity, but it looks like we are drifting aimlessly around the backwaters...... struggling to relax as there are constant sights to see.

Short stop and shop....refilled Tonic water, K&A bought Tiffin tins.

Sundowner with copious Kingfisher Blue....made all the more authentic by sighting several kingfishers. Sun setting with gentle back ground music drifting from the nearby temple.

  • CRUNCH time

    8 marca 2020, Indie ⋅ ⛅ 26 °C

Very worrying time Mike managed to fall / trip / swallow dive / horizontally piroett off the houseboat falling 5ft onto rough concrete steps, wedging himself between the boat and the concrete jetty.... a few expletives and several pints of blood later we managed to extricate him. Following a patch up on board and a threesome shower ( what happens on the boat stays on the boat ) we transferred Mike to a local hospital. He was expertly cared for by a team of Catholic nuns. Our faith in humanity was restored by the amazing kindness shown by all the staff, Babu & Jimmy who spent the whole night attending to Mike and one of the local residents who kindly transferred us to the hospital.

Thankfully Mike survived despite copious cuts, bruises and rib fractures.

  • Day 3 on the houseboat

    8 marca 2020, Indie ⋅ ☁️ 28 °C

Final day drifting along the backwaters..... amazing sites with everyone going about their daily lives; washing, swimming, fishing for tea. Passed several highly decorated Catholic churches.

Another lovely lunch; Keralan thali served on a banana leaf.

Passed an area famous for ducks, crowds of young ducklings darting in front of the boat..... one of them featured in an excellent ( rather bony) duck curry for our dinner.
