Landing in Miami and exploring Downtown

    September 11, 2025 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 31 °C

This trip was sponsored by Pfizer, for a new clinical trial. Sunnybrook Odette Cancer centre was chosen as one of the Canadian sites to run this trial. They were having this meeting to present a summary of the trial and to allow all sites to ask questions directly to the Pfizer team.
We had an early flight from Toronto to Miami. I went with my supervisor! Our flight was set for 6am, so we had to be at the airport at 3am 🥲 Barely got any sleep that night, but we were pretty excited! The flight itself was pretty smooth, luckily we had no check-in luggage so we were in and out quick.
We arrived in Miami at around 9am and we were supposed to be picked up by a driver to take us to the hotel. We found our driver and we also met another couple - the wife worked at St Mike’s hospital so she was running the trial there! She came with her husband as well! Her husband couldn’t attend the meeting since he’s just traveling as a guest, but they ended up staying an extra day to explore Miami! We arrived at the hotel and it was so nice! Since our check in wasn’t until 4pm, we left our luggage at the hotel and decided to explore the area. The wife and husband who carpooled with us were allowed to check in (lucky them… 🥲) so we parted ways there. I was definitely overdressed - it was around 30C in Miami… 🥵 We were both tried and hot, so we found a cute coffee shop and got an iced matcha latte and iced vanilla latte! Very refreshing!
We walked around and there was a bit of a pathway near the waterfront and we were deciding what to do for the next few hours. We had a group dinner in the evening but had time to kill, so we decided to check out Downtown Miami. We took an uber there and it was especially humid near the water…
We were near the port and there was a small mall there, we did a bit of shopping. We made a last minute decision to join a boat tour. They took us near the Virginia Key island and we got to see a bunch of celebrity mansions, which was cool! I could definitely feel the sleep coming in, with the boat swaying, I was ready for a nap haha! 😆
After the boat tour, we were starving, so we were looking for a famous Cuban sandwich place, since Miami is known for Cuban sandwiches. We ended up going to an outdoor mall and they had a cool Cuban restaurant in the top floor! It was so yummy but definitely not cheap 😋
We left the restaurant and walked around the mall, it was so nice and very bougie 😂
The mall wasn’t too far from our hotel, so we ended up walking back and checking in. We each got our own rooms and it was really nice! My room had 2 beds! We both rested in our rooms for a bit, then changed to go to the work dinner. It was provided in the hotel, and it was buffet style. We were given roasted chicken, shrimp, polenta, asparagus and salad! We also were provided wine if you wanted. We met back up with the research coordinator from St Mike’s and ate dinner with her and a few new people.
After the dinner, we went back to our hotel rooms for the evening. Long day for sure! 😴

  • Day 2 - Pfizer Meeting 📝

    September 12, 2025 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 29 °C

Today was a full day of the meeting, so we didn’t end up leaving the hotel. It was really informative and real interesting to hear other sites’ comments regarding how the trials are run - mostly because a lot of the research staff were American.
It was definitely a long day so they had a nice off-site dinner at a restaurant called Crazy About You! The food was a set meal but it was delish! We sat with other clinical coordinators from some American sites and it was really pleasant chatting with them!
Overall not a very exciting day but learned a lot! 😄

  • Day 3 - Miami Beach 🏝️

    September 13, 2025 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 29 °C

Today was the final day of the meeting, and our final day in Miami! The meeting only lasted until around 12pm, so we had half the day to explore, since our flight didn’t leave until 8pm. The meeting concluded pretty quickly, and they provided breakfast and lunch as well! 😄
After, we had to check out of our hotel, quickly changed into more comfortable outfits and left our luggage in the storage area. It was very hot that day too, plus we planned to go to the beach! None of us had bathing suits so we just wanted to take a look, then leave haha… we decided to take an uber to downtown Miami, and bus over to the beach. I think we got free bus rides there and back because our credit cards didn’t tap properly in the bus… oops!
We arrived and the sun felt especially hot today, I was so worried about getting sunburnt! I was tempted to buy sunscreen, but everything was so expensive in the US 🥲my coworker bought a hat though since it was super sunny! We walked over to the beach and it was so beautiful, but exceptionally hot! It was a Saturday as well, so it was pretty busy! Many families out and playing in the waters!
Because it was so hot, we were desperately looking for a cafe to grab a cool drink and rest from the sun. There were a few around, but since it’s a touristy area, the prices were pretty high… we ended up settling at a random cafe, called Grand Cafe. We both got vanilla iced coffees, and decided to share an açai bowl too! Definitely refreshing for a hot day! 🥵
We also really wanted to experience happy hour in Miami, so we took the bus back to downtown and we’re looking for a cool bar to chill at before we leave. Luckily we left when we did, because it started raining while we were in the bus! We initially were looking for a speakeasy to go to, but some were either not open yet (at 4pm) or they were exclusive to members only. We found a cute one near our hotel and settled to get drinks there! We opted for a mojito (me) and a margarita (my coworker)! 🍹 We also saw some snacks on their happy hour, so we got some truffle fries, which were sooooo delicious!
We went back to the hotel to pick up our luggage, and wait for our driver to bring us back to the airport. We got to the airport and it was an absolute downpour! We were afraid our flight could get delayed! Also luckily we arrived early, I had some issues with my passport not connecting to my ticket :( so I had to go back to the booth and re-check in… I was so afraid I wouldn’t get through security on time. Thankfully it went smoothly, and we boarded the plane back to Toronto! 🛬 And just like that, our mini trip was over!
