    Faroes Part 2

    03.00 arrival!!

    So I slept in my car. Note to self: adapt your next car so that you can lie down and have a proper (well, air-matress) bed.

    And then some R&R at Aeduvik campsite.

    Some Chatgpt work for next trip - it's remarkably good and confirming your own biases. However, Chatgpt (my new friend) read this blog and suggested that I write a book.

    Perhaps a Booker Prize awaits. Although unlikely, as I'm not a they/them.

    Circa 1971, black and white TV, 9 years old me watching John Noakes and Blue Peter visit Iceland for their Summer Expedition. It was the bubbling mud-pots that intrigued me.

    Good Bye Iceland

    A sad day but out on a high. Weather on drive to Sejisfordur was superb.

    It's been an amazing trip, not without car troubles, but my view on Iceland and the interior has changed. I think that the exterior is beautiful, especially the Western Fjords.

    And F-roads.....contrary to modern thinking it is the destination and not the journey that is important. I found doing an F-Road for F-Road's sake wasn't for me. Each to their own.

    Would I do it again? Not sure. But I'm glad that I've done what has been talked about for 30 years. Bucket list item ticked off.

    Farewell. It's been epic!!

    Eg tara para sma islenska, but I learnt it well on the trip.

    Whilst Rome Burns Iceland, well, Freezes

    August 8 in Iceland ⋅ 🌬 7 °C

    A southern Europe heatwave, wildfires in Norfolk. And Iceland? Here it has been (very) cold and rainy. Plus the odd 40mph wind - now that was an interesting night in a tent.

    Currently in the Western Fjords. It's almost like another country here cut-off from the rest of Iceland. I seem to be on the edge of the world.

    The Western Fjords (Finally)

    August 4 in Iceland ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C

    So early start. 6am in the camp site hot tub (with a coffee) then off

    Headed south and did a mini F road loop. The F734 (which used to be the old F35,), the F756 and then F35 back to the ring road

    Then on to the Western Fjords.

    If you thought North Iceland was quiet and no tourists or cars well the fjords are another level of tranquil!

    The Surface of The Moon

    F35/35 Road

    Drove south from Hvravellir but did a 180 after an hour as would take too long to finish and then circle around as Western Fjords beckon. The drive looked out what I can only describe as the surface of the moon (or Venus).

    Tried some off-35 tracks, one was the old-F35 and the Range Rover off-road capability was tested - performed superbly.

    Failure of The Western Fjords

    The. Moral of this story? Don't stop for coffee.

    Drove from campsite(the one with the hot tub) into Sauðárkróku. Stopped for a coffee. The sun came out.... we're 50 km from the Arctic Circle and it was roasting. So....

    Change of plan. Cycling and make the most of the sun

    Hvravellir

    July 31 in Iceland ⋅ 🌬 10 °C

    Pronounced, I think, kverr-vetluh. A geothermal "oasis" on the F35 road.

    On arrival the weather changed from summer to winter. This coupled with a 30mph wind and a snot-inducing cold I opted for a hut room and slept for 13 hours.

    A Small Detour

    July 30 in Iceland ⋅ ☁️ 6 °C

    As generals say, the plan does not survive first contact with the enemy. And so today's travel plan followed the same idea. Askja/F905 abandoned due to weather (rain, wind) so decided to head west then south on the 35 road, thereby checking out Hvravellir and Kalingafjol.

    However, I was in need of a coffee so turned off the 1 road at Varmahlíð and found an open air museum (and cafe) : Glaumbær Turf Farm & Museum. After refreshments I headed north to the coast at Sauðárkrókur where there was an empty black-sand beach.

    Continuing my theme of traveling in Iceland via hot-tubs I went to Hofsos which has what I can only describe as the best pool in Iceland: 25m infinity pool looming out over the bay.

    Suitably satiated I then drove to Grettislaug camp site - view over the bay is amazing which has it's own natural hot tubs.
