    July 28 in Iceland ⋅ ☁️ 8 °C

A rest day today after the epic F26.

Got talking to Thomas (Swiss) at Laugar campsite who was interested in my tent - the Tarptent Scarp-1. Thomas has a very impressive old Land Cruiser + fridge + rooftent + tent + 3 children. His wife (also Swiss) grew up in Chandler's Ford and lived 1 km from my house - small world.

After a car rearrangement (my fourth) I washed off the F26 dust and showered. Change of socks today NB travel-bloggers: merino does eventually pong a bit!

Cold and rainy so headed to Myvatn which I visited in 2001. Much has changed. Parking charges at tourist sites now - so parked up and e-biked.

Lunch was local rye bread and smoked trout served by a Scotsman with an Icelandic accent.

  • F26 Part 2

    July 26 in Iceland ⋅ ⛅ 8 °C

After a night camping at Nýidalur hut (4C people i.e. cold) I was escorted across two rivers by the 112 Search and Rescue guys (a thank you to "Victory John").

I had the misfortune to go to the cinema to see one of the latest Bond films. The title escapes me although the tedium of the film doesn't. After five minutes I couldn't wait for the film to end but I knew that I would have to sit through over two hours of the director trying to be "edgy" but failing and so two hours of tedium The F26 was pretty much like that bond film - it was ok for the first five minutes, but I couldn't wait for it to end. It took over four hours.

The Range Rover performed superbly although it is now brown rather than black as it is coated in dust.

  • The F26

    July 26 in Iceland ⋅ ☀️ 7 °C

This road runs north south and was the main route in ancient times. After leaving Landmannalaugar and refueling (diesel and coffee) I headed north. 2/3 done by 18.00. So now camping at Nýidalur. Ranger has offered to escort across 2 rivers tomorrow.

Met a Danish influencer bruhOliver at the Nýidalur hut walking the F26. The folly/inspiration of youth!!

  • What's an F in Road?

    July 26 in Iceland ⋅ ☁️ 4 °C

Iceland F Roads....the off-road-roads of gravel, rock, sand and river crossings. So done with trepidation at first and then...my first river crossing. The Range Rover was set to max height on the air suspension, low ratio and...off I went. Success. A few more rivers and I think I've got the hang of it. However...the Icelanders have snorkels on their air intakes. Do the know something that I don't?Read more

  • F225 to Landmannalaugar

    July 24 in Iceland ⋅ ☁️ 7 °C

Plans, who needs them? Was going to take F208 (no river crossings) but spoke to park ranger and swapped routes. Oh what an epic and I'm no longer a river crossing virgin

  • Jokulsarlon And Crossing The Sandur

    June 11 in Iceland ⋅ ⛅ 9 °C

What a difference twenty years makes. Fancy hotels everywhere, paid parking. Jokulsarlon lagoon like Piccadilly Circus. Perhaps "being in the moment" is better than the Instagram selfie everyone

And the Sandur? Almost infinite black sand and dust. Plus a memorial made from the mangled girders of a bridge destroyed by a jökulhlaup (volcano induced massive glacier flood)Read more

  • The Eastern Fjords

    June 10 in Iceland ⋅ ☁️ 7 °C

An underrated and poorly visited part of Iceland. I can see why as very slow driving around stunning fjords.

Stopped at the "Viking Cafe" and swapped to bicycle to explore, thereby avoiding extortionate parking fees. Chatted with barista in cafe and because I was pleasant he gave me a free ticket to the "village experience"

Hofn for refuel and then partook swimming pool and hot tubs.

Airbnb last night - washing machine and comfy bed. Comatose sleeping

Cycling today up to Vök Spa - looks nice but £50. Cheapskate so went to municipal pool for £7. Pool, hot tubs, sauna.

Cycle paths here - amazingRead more

  • Leaving Bakkagerði

    June 7 in Iceland ⋅ 🌧 7 °C

I came for an hour to see Puffins. I stayed three days. What appears a dying fishing port is a hive of activity. Hotel, spa, shop, brewery, bar, cafe.

I went to the spa and hot tub three times (Nurse Eva was on reception), bar was great, visited "day of fish" afternoon tea at community centre (in Icelandic) : maturinn var ljúffengur.

    A gem of a place

  • Helloooo Iceland

    June 4 in Iceland ⋅ 🌫 4 °C

Uneventful crossing and an entirely comatose 10 hour sleep. Splashed out in buffet dinner in board where I ate fish x 3 (plates). Great staff on the ship. At breakfast I got awarded free coffee for being honest and attempting to pay for a refill - some nationalities (naming no names here) don't do this (allegedly)

Now in Seydisfojdur - expected issues with Icelandic customs being the only Brit on the boat (99% Dutch and German) but sailed through in my black drug-dealer Range Rover

  • Torshavn and Human Kindness

    June 1 in Faroe Islands ⋅ ☁️ 10 °C

Torshavn breakfast and then Kiskjubour. Right on form had Range Rover problem. Limped back to Torshavn. Asked a garage - directed to another - directed to another and then, finally, someone who could fix it. So big the thanks to Wenzel Cars and Martin. Great kindness show.n. Whilst being repaired I thumbed lift into Torshavn from a local politician. Human kindness in abundance.
Car fixed, drove undersea tunnel (and underground roundabout) to Esturoy and camp site. There was a stupendous new pool and wellness suite to sample
