From Guitar builder to the ancient sites of the City. Seville’s captivating history is a story of successive empires and golden ages. Its foundations were laid by the Romans, but it was five centuries of Moorish rule that forged its iconic skyline, gifting the city the Giralda tower and the original Royal Alcázar palace.
A pivotal moment came after the Christian Reconquest in 1248. With the discovery of the Americas, Seville was granted a monopoly on trade with the New World, transforming it into the immensely wealthy and powerful center of the Spanish Empire. This 16th-century “Golden Age” funded the construction of the magnificent Seville Cathedral and nurtured the genius of Baroque painters like Velázquez.
Though its prominence later faded, Seville reinvented itself for the modern era, hosting world fairs that shaped its vibrant contemporary character. Today, this rich history lives on. Its UNESCO-listed highlights—the Cathedral, Alcázar, and Archive of the Indies—stand as monuments to its layered past, while the city’s soul echoes in the winding lanes of the Santa Cruz quarter and the passionate art of flamenco.
