• Winterthur Switzerland

    August 14 in Switzerland ☀️ 29 °C

Zurich, on Bodensee (Lake Constance), in northeastern Switzerland: a good jumping off, or jumping in, point for Europe. Winterthur, where I am staying, is the sixth largest town in Switzerland. It was picked arbitrarily off the map as somewhere to recover from jet lag and not have to pay Zurich prices for a hotel. Fifteen minutes by train from the airport station, it turned out to be a good choice - charming tidy town currently hosting a music festival with street music and, at 36 degrees, everyone drinking lots of beer in the streets; and fresh food markets in the town square.
It is, however, a linguistic challenge as only Swiss German is spoken here. Duolingo prepared me somewhat for the other end of Switzerland where they speak French. Plenty of tourists, or are they visitors, being polite and well behaved. The streets are clean and tidy and there are not many curves; few old looking buildings and everything works. I knew it was 9:15 because that is when the train arrived.
Glad for my air conditioned room and my hotel has beer on tap. Fun train trip to Lausanne tomorrow where I will catch up with someone I met as a volunteer at the koala hospital.
    Gute gesundheit
