Deramakot Nature Reserve

We went on an early game drive, but without much luck spotting any wildlife.
It was however very enjoyable driving through the great jungle and looking at some of the many species of ginger.
One of the very tall trees was very popular with wild bees who built their nests high in its branches. Many years ago locals had hammered spikes into the trunk so that they could climb up and access the honey combs.
Our guide - Adi - suggested that we went out at 3:30 for a late afternoon / evening drive.
This started out as a bit of a wet affair, but we were rewarded with a very good sighting of red leafed monkeys and a number of flying squirrels, including a pigmy flying squirrel which is rarely seen and our guide was very excited.Read more
