    Day 1 -Friday So the journey begins

    6–7 okt. 2023, Singapore ⋅ ⛅ 31 °C

    Well this will be some journey, leave Heathrow at 11:25 am to Singapore, just the one change and on to Hanoi, expecting to arrive on saturday at 11:25 am ! (+7hr time) difference

    Well left on time and I'm surprised at how big and comfortable the seat is, plenty of wine, and lunch was really nice (roast chicken &veg, cheese, crackers, bread roll then ice cream, only six hours into flight just between Tbilisi and Baku and already had 3 glasses of wine and a tiger beer 😜

    Bought and downloaded an e SIM so I can have internet and phone whilst in Vietnam, download was easy once I'd worked out how to copy qr code, ended up taking a photo of it onto my camera and then scanning the camera screen back onto phone. Well let's hope it works 🤣    Läs mer

    Day 2

    Well a good night's sleep on flight to Singapore, probably helped by lots of alcohol and food 😜

    Fifty minute stop for next flight to Hanoi and here we are in hanoi, cleared customs, met my guide now just waiting for some more. First impressions very busy, people seem polite and welcoming ....and it's really humid 🫠

    Day 3 Lunch

    Restaurant for lunch,then to the Museum of ethnology

    I must say the food has been really good, fragrant fresh and tasty and lunch was excellent , just enough for our walk around the museum.

    Only a small museum on two floors but it's to show the cultural differences between the many groups that make up Vietnam, with the distinctly Chinese feel to the northern regions but really to show people how diverse the population is.Läs mer

    Tonight's evening meal is with our guide introducing us to "safe street food", so we are off touring the delicacies.
    Started at a place serving beef noodle soup, then moved on to try "proper Vietnamese spring rolls" followed by another site serving egg coffee, which is made with egg and condensed milk being cooked up to a thick almost custard consistency with the coffee then poured in but it settles at the bottom of the cup so you have to then stir it in 🥴
    It was ok but I liked the idea that instead of a saucer the coffee cup arrived sat in a bowl of steaming hot water, something I might try with my espresso at home 🤣    Läs mer

    Stop for coffee

    Day 4

    9 oktober 2023, Vietnam ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

    Today it's a long coach journey through the country to Northern Vietnam's rice terraces in Hoang Su Phi where we will be stopping in an ecolodge in panhou village before setting out for a hike the next day. (God help me what have I done...me hiking 🥴)

    What fantastic scenery as we travel into the hills, our guide says we are within 100 kilometers of china

    Cant believe the crops, rice, sweetcorn, dragonfruit, oranges, tea, lots of wood drying for plywood.

    Stopped at a truck stop for lunch, really nice meal, never had pork in dock leaves before. Took a short video of a motorcycle loaded up with live fish 😵‍💫    Läs mer

    Day 4 (pm) Panhou ecolodge retreat

    Well after a long drive we ended up at panhou retreat, not quite what I was expecting but as we are hiking tomorrow I'm pleasantly surprised 😎

    The grounds are lovely with a spa, massage centre, pool, hot tubs , certainly very relaxing indeed. When I get home I might well click on the qr code and see what it says.

    There's no TV or WiFi in the bedroom but I think the idea is to encourage people to relax, and if you need wi fi then it's available in the bar and restaurant, funnily enough no phone signal here either 😜    Läs mer

    Day 5 - the hike

    Well today is the day I see if I can manage the first hike, our tour guide, Mr binh Nguyen (known as win win) has told us it's 3 hours up the mountain then we visit a farm where the farmer is going to cook our lunch, then it's a different route down back to the spa...to me that sounds like a six hour hike..so watch this space 🥴

    Day 5 - recovery time

    Well pleased with today so now it's bar time, several people in the group are doing the spa and massage thing until tea tonight so it's relax time now

    Day 7 back to hanoi

    Well all packed and ready for road trip back to Hanoi for one night

    Well we grounded the bus a few times on the rough roads, had to get out a few times 🤣

    Great scenery coming down, stopped for a rest break and they had bee larvae for sale, god knows what you do with them 🥴 according to our guide they eat the grubs and the bees are put into wine to make bee wine 😝Läs mer

    Day 8 overnight cruise

    Today we set off for an overnight cruise on ha long bay, apparently it's about a 2 1/2 hour drive from hanoi , again I've no idea what to expect.

    Well we stopped for a break at a right tourist trap. Everything was quality and meant to be non profit with money going to local community but bloody hell the prices were a rip off, the hotel we had stopped in were charging £2.50 for a fridge magnet, the identical one in this place £5.00, shirts £40 in the tourist trap lol needless to say I bought nothing lol

    Day 8 - the cruise - part 2

    Well a lovely boat, with a bar and sun deck plus yet again good food, we parked up at an island so we could climb to the top for a view.
    400 steps up , 91.6 metres up, 15 mins up and 15 mins down then on the beach for half an hour then we are setting off again and next stop is kayaking and a visit to a pearl farm then we sail off into the sunset 🤣🤣😎

    Cruise to the caves

    Well up early to watch the sun rise as we move to see some sea caves, but first is meant to be a tai chi class on the sun deck.

    Well, tai chi turned into a meditation class which was hard enough for me so god knows what I'd have done for tai chi, at least I touched my toes lol

    The cave was gigantic and if you use your imagination you can see all sorts of images, a monkey climbing a tree, a turtle, a dragon, a snakes head, a Chinese dog lol

    After the cave it's a cruise in the bay and then a flight to hoi an for a base for three days.    Läs mer

    Day 9 flight to

    14 oktober 2023, Vietnam ⋅ 🌧 25 °C

    Well that's the mountains of the north completed so it's now back to Hanoi for an internal flight to Da Nang which is only around 90 minutes by air, then we check into hotel to start our discovery of the middle area of Vietnam.

    Well we've arrived but it appears a tropical cyclone is just off the coast of mid Vietnam and to be fair it's not just raining cats and dogs but it's coming down by the bucket load complete with thunder and lightning lol

    We are all wondering if our excursions and activities will take place tomorrow, bearing in mind about 3000 people have been moved from river areas due to flooding, and tomorrow we are planned to go on the river 🤣🤣🤣

    Day 10 oh dear

    Well a tropical cyclone / typhoon hit the middle of Vietnam, woke up this morning and it's still here so no idea what we will be doing today 😕

    Well rain stopped so it's onto the river to go in a coracle, then an hour and a half cycle ride to a farm for a cooking demonstration where we each cooked our starter , egg roll, lunch then followed and then a look round the herb farm.

    Well the rain stopped enough for a few of us to head down to the old town market.

    It's a place so full of life and the sound and smells are amazing, luckily the river hasn't broke its bank yet so the market went ahead.

    We went to VJ,'s market restaurant and I had stuffed squid, the whole meal (shown in pictures) including a beer each, only came to £36 !!    Läs mer
