Well we didn't feel the need to stop today - though I did discover Mimbi Caves on the way past - a spot that you are required to pre book to stay and tour, so not on our 'radar' while concentrating on upcoming our Horizontal Falls tour.
We arrive here in Derby - finally find this Caravan Park that we're looking for (I'm driving so Rog navigating 🤣). Book in for 4 nights - to cover our outing with our tour, and as the park is so quiet (end of season) we can chose our own site. We select 43 as it's nice and close to amenities block. We settle in - as it's hot, we enjoy the air conditioner in our caravan. We relax and do not much. Rog reading and I prepare and cook tea with the Thermie - Asparagus risotto tonight. Followed by a shared block of Cadbury chocolate (a $2 bargain - Lamington 😁). Tidy up dishes, then I set up 9Now on our TV so I can watch 'Postcards' as they have a couple of episodes that feature Dunkeld. Now I'm in TV watching mode so Rog and I to bed and I watch a movie on Prime (so bad a pick, though it did make me laugh, I can't remember it!).
Friday morning, sees us happy we're coasting, already here for our Horizontal Falls tour tomorrow. Roger gets up 1st and has his weetbix for breakie, I get up 6.30am and have my porridge etc. We get ourselves ready for a walk, to go check out the main shop area. Off we go around 8.30am, excited to find the Tourist Information Centre open 8am to 2pm. Learn that we should check put low tide and high tide at the Derby Wharf, there's an Art Studio with a Museum attached that is open in the mornings until 1pm - worth a look. Plus good to checkout the sunset with the sculptures that are in place around the foreshores. So that's pretty much what we did for the day. We finished our morning walk - with Rog getting the ute and meeting (I walked of course!) me at the wharf to see low tide. Then went and checked out the Art Gallery - a beauty, showcasing local talent, with a small selection of art museum pieces to check out as well. Next we drive to the Bakery and get pies for lunch - beef curry Roger, chicken curry for me and a Apple turnover to share. Very yummy all of it! We take these back to our caravan to eat, and it's after finishing lunch that I receive a phonecall I wish I didn't have to get.......our Horizontal Falls tour is being cancelled due to the forecast of heavy rain and bad weather (huh....?). I'm quite in shock during this call (disappointed seems an understatement - Roger and I have been so keen for this 'lash out') but I do get that our chance for this type of tour is done for this year - and the day tour is about to finish as well, and not likely to be convenient for us as in Broome....da de da da......
OK we get a full refund of the tour cost - just leaves us coming to terms with the fact we've booked here for nights we no longer need (and clear no refunds policy when we arrived) and we missed a few opportunities in making sure we got here for this tour. Oh well, just got to roll, and know some things just aren't to be! Doesn't stop me sulking for the arvo though! We now 'chill out' for a while - I fiddle with a new purchase from this morning's walk, a Thermacell Insect Repeller and Roger works on the broken caravan door latch (something that happened while Roger was setting up yesterday). When it comes time for high tide (a bit before) we go for a drive back to the Wharf to see - impressive! Back to our van to relax until we drive out again to watch the sunset on the water with the sculptures about the place - really lovely.
Afterwards back to camp and Roger prepares and cooks tea, while I look on the computer for other things we might do - definitely interested in the swimming with Whale Sharks in Nigaloo at Exmouth, getting to the end of their season though too.....so we'll wait and see...
Tea is a sausage vegetable casserole (pkt seasoning) with rice. Dishes get done and Roger goes for a shower (I had mine just before tea), now relaxing, Roger in bed already, I'm just writing this, then planning to update budget books before bed.
The alarm goes off at 4am - to see us getting up, having our breakfast, Roger making sandwiches for our packed lunch, while I tidy up and get organised for our outing to Tunnel Creek. We head off before 5am for the 180km + drive, seeing plenty of kangaroos at this time (hit a small one unfortunately). Planning to do the Tunnel Creek walk and look around the National Parks out this way.
We get back earlier than expected - around lunchtime - to our caravan after our outing to Tunnel Creek and Windjana Gorge, so we eat our 'packed' lunch in our van. It's got warm now so we're just wanting to keep cool. We relax in the van for a while, then Roger comes up with the plan that we could spend the rest of the afternoon at the Derby Public Swimming Pool. We've already checked its opening times 11am to 5.30pm daily - so we figure this will be the go! So we get ourselves organised into bathers, sunscreen on, camp chairs packed, bag packed with our reading books and snacks etc and jump in the ute and drive to the pool. Huh?? It's not open! We're stunned! Must be something to do with WA long weekend? Though that doesn't really make sense either! Oh well all we can do is head back to our camp site and relax and stay cool there for the rest of the day. Watch some TV in air conditioned comfort, Ghost Busters 2. Tea tonight is reheated leftover sausage casserole followed by fresh fruit salad and yoghurt. Tidy up, have showers, now watch a movie - not bad, then bed.
Sunday morning, I am up before 6.15am as Roger got up at 6am. I decide to go for a 'shuffle' - been a while! I go to the wharf and back - surprises me that this was over 6kms! Have breakfast of porridge with Roger (he waited until I was back) - he's been busy getting us ready to leave for Broome today. After breakfast I go enjoy a shower, then help finish up inside caravan details to leave. We head off before 9am.
Note: we leave after 3 night stay as we got a refund on the 4th we'd booked as no longer required once our tour got cancelled.
