Narrandera Fisheries Centre

We drive straight to here from Helen and Ben's place. We park, and Roger feels like a cuppa, so he gets in the caravan and makes us one - we have them in our travel cups so we can walk about with them. We go over and check out the closest building - it's where we'll meet up for our 11.30am tour. We return our finished with travel cups to the van, then return to wait for our tour. Our tour commences on time - Rog and I the only ones on this tour time - previous 10.30am tour was a bus load of 'Boys in the Bush' students - so much quieter for the same guide. We get to watch a very informative video before we are shown about the 'hatchery' - and also meet 'Agro' the resident Murray Cod, he's been raised from a fingerling (and kept in captivity) - he's now 105cm long and gets cranky if he doesn't get attention.
Good tour. Now time to drive into Narrandera.Read more

Morning walk Rotary Lookout Narrandera

This is such a lovely walk along beside the water canals - from our campsite at Rocky Waterholes to the Lake Talbot Water Park. Roger drives, and parks our ute and caravan beside the water park, and comes for a walk to meet up with me. He shows me a koala sleeping in the trees - glad he found it, I would have missed it for sure.Read more

Lake Talbot Water Park Narrandera

This is part of my morning walk, Roger has parked our ute and van here and is walking with me as we check this lovely area out. This water park is closed at present as it is out of season (weather related) but we can see it is a fantastic family orientated attraction. There is a caravan park right behind it - so ideal for holiday makers when it's open. Our walk about includes the Skywalk that has been built out over the water here - makes for stunning views. I finish off my walk by going to the Rotary Lookout - Roger is content to go and wait for me back at the ute. When I return, we get driving - heading for our next destination.Read more

On our drive here from Narrandera, we stop along the way to get some firewood from the side of the road. When we arrive in the town, we start by checking out a couple of free camping spots as found by using Wiki Camps. The 2 places we look at - are nicely beside the river, one has a permanent camper - tent arrangement - we're not comfy with (rubbish all around the camp) and the other (both really) would be difficult to get out of (slippery clay ground if wet) if the forecast rain comes in. We decide from our drive around - we like the look of Punt Hotel RV camping on offer. It's free - though patronage of the Hotel is encouraged and appreciated. So that's where we head to.Read more

Punt Hotel RV camping Darlington Point

Come here and park ourselves in the camping area out the back of the Hotel. It is very neat and looks good. We go for a walk to the Hotel to see what we need to do to stay. It's shut.....on walking around the building, we find (I assume the owner or manager) working out the back - he tells us we're welcome to stay and that the Hotel opens for business at 4pm during the week - weekends it opens 11am. He is nice and friendly - quite happy to chat, we meet his dog Jasper (big mastiff type - lovely sook) and find out he used to work at the Altina Zoo (for 20 years). We leave him to his work, and go settle ourselves on our chosen site. Once set up (not much involved - still hitched to ute, no awning, no mat out) we have our lunch. Roger has a couple of meat and salad sandwiches, and I have a couple of open toasties - relish, avocado, tomato, salami, capsicum and cheese. Next, Roger goes for a walk across the road to the supermarket to get some mousetraps, I stay tidying up at the van. Once Roger's back - and set up his new traps in the back of the ute, we relax for the afternoon - reading our books. I do go for a short stroll to check out the town - it's a lovely small town, so I'm not gone for long. At 5.30pm we go over to the Hotel to have some drinks and get some tea. We both order Parmigianas - Rog's with salad and chips, mine with vegetables and mash. Good meals and nice company - chatting with fellow travellers. Quite a few customers in the pub tonight. When we've finished our meals, we come back to our caravan. Roger has a shower, I catch up our budget books. Now relaxing (I'm writing this up) before bed. As I head to bed, there is rain! Lovely sound to snuggle up in bed to.
22/05/25 Thursday. I get up before Roger just before 7.30am, I'm keen to go for a run this morning. As I'm getting dressed I hear a light shower of rain on our caravan - not going to deter me! Turns out, the shower of rain was short, I didn't get rained on while I was on my run. I went along Darlington Point's 'Goanna' walking trail - lovely along side the river, by the time I returned I'd covered 6km. Roger has us pretty well ready to go - I just have to have my breakie and shower - which I do. We still have plenty of time before we need to be at Altina Wildlife Park for our 11am tour, so Roger and I go over to the Cafe in Darlington Point so Rog can have a coffee. Then we go to the Tourist Information Centre so I can buy souvenir jerky - emu, kangaroo and croc jerky. Ridiculously expensive- but just be interesting to try it, haven't seen it elsewhere. We decide to head off now (still early), just after 10am.Read more

Altina Wildlife Park Darlington Point

Arrive here with plenty of time before our booked tour - so we have to park outside the entrance gates to wait until they open (apparently 10 minutes before tours start). We fluke it - the gates open to let some staff in - so we sneak in as well. We park our ute and caravan, and wait until we see other visitors arriving before we head on into the office.
We have a great time checking out the animals in the well kept enclosures - all are obviously well cared for. Then have a terrific guided tour - being towed about the property on a trailer with seating and cover. We really enjoyed our guide's commentary- very informative and interesting - and wonderful to have all different types of animals from other countries.
What a great way to spend a few hours. After our tour - we go back to the office/shop and have a complimentary cuppa before we leave.Read more

Hay Showgrounds NSW

After leaving Altina Wildlife Park, we stop at a nearby service station (Darlington Point) to get a hot snack for lunch - we're cold after our beaut tour. Roger has a pie and I get a fancy potato cake (bacon, cheese and onion). Then we continue our drive to Hay.
When we get there, this is the first place we come to, so we can set up camp, and unhitch from the caravan.
On arrival, we call the caretaker Kevin, and he instructs us as to where our site will be and how to pay. We follow these instructions, and are happy with our campsite. Once we're set up, we go for a drive back into Hay to go to the Visitor Centre.
We return from our outing just after 5pm. Time to relax with a drink, before preparing tea. Roger does beef tacos tonight. While he's cooking, I call our lovely Dunkeld neighbour Dave Tyson, for a favour - ask him to go into our house and find a receipt on our laundry pin up board - which he does (legend). We now have all the details of a 'credit booking' from Marong Big 4 Tourist Park (near Bendigo) - that come about back in 2022, when we'd booked to go there for Tarsh and Will's engagement - but couldn't attend due to flooding. We'll try and use that credit for a stay on our way with this trip. After having our tea, Roger has his shower, and I do the dishes. Now time to relax before bed.
23/05/25 Friday I get up 1st at around 7.30am to go for a run around the trotting track that we're camped beside. I do 4 laps, before coming back to our van to go and have a shower at the showground amenities, then have my breakfast. Rog and I tidy up, and do the dishes, and get ready to go checknout some Hay attractions. We drive out before 10am.
After being at the Shearing Centre we come back here and have some lunch. Roger has 2 rounds of meat and salad sandwiches, and I finish off the leftover mince and tacos. While back here, we make some phonecalls regarding collecting the raffle prize I won in Moulamein. After some 'sorting' we establish that we can pick it up tomorrow from Edward River Gardens Aged Care in Moulamein. After this, we drive back into Hay to go to the Goal, we follow this with going to the Museum.
Then we go down the main street so Roger can go to the butcher and the supermarket - getting stuff for our tea tonight. We come back here around 4pm. It's cold and drizzling rain so we're happy just to relax, reading in our caravan. I do try the TV, and end up watching an Australian Story on ABC iView. For tea tonight, Roger cooks in the airfryer, chicken kievs (huge - from the local butcher) and serves this with mashed potato (Thermomix) and boiled vegetables. Our usual routine, Roger goes and has his shower, I wash the dishes. Roger dries them and puts them away when he returns. I give Barb a call, to find out how's she's doing and what Adrian's up to. Also to confirm that we'll use Sally's (from Dunkeld) tickets for Torvill and Dean. Sounding positive about Adrian - he's feeling better and has moved today to Kingston Rehab. Now relaxing before bed.
24/05/25 Saturday Have a bit of a lie in - we get up just before 8am. Have a leisurely breakfast - both have porridge, and Roger also has a couple of pieces of toast (1 vegemite, 1 honey), and our cuppas. Get organised to leave here. We're all tidied up and packed, on the move 9.15am.Read more

We drive into the main street area and find the Visitor Centre. Park and go and check out what we can see and do over the next couple of days. The lady in the centre does a great job of giving us plenty of information. We decide to go and look at Bishop's Lodge next.
We come back to the main street afterwards, and go for a walk to checkout the shops. I take the opportunity to go into IGA Liquor and buy a couple of bottles of bubbles. We then return to our ute and drive back to our camp at the Showgrounds.Read more

Shear Outback Hay NSW

Get here in good time for the 10.30am shearing demonstration. We pay our $20 each entry fee - and I purchase a hatpin. Then we enjoy looking at the displays before heading to the Woolshed to see 'Jack' shear a cross-bred sheep. Jack gives a very good outline of the shearing 'game' and its costs and potential earnings.
After this, we check out the outside maze - I can't be bothered trying to work it out, Rog has a go, but the drizzly weather has us going back inside the display shed. Feel proud and sad at the same time to see a memorial blade plaque in honour of Adam McClure RIP.
We spend quite a while here - looking at the history and reading about shearing in Australia and beyond.
When we leave, we're ready to have some lunch - decide to go back to our caravan to make up our own.Read more

After having our lunch we drive to here. $5 each for entry (honesty). There is so much to look at here. Some tough times for the female inmates in the past here! Also includes many and varied collections of historic items. Good way to spend some time today with the colder weather.

Lovely to see the old Railway Station being cared for and maintained.
After finishing here, we're ready to go back to our caravan - then Roger remembers he'd like to get some grocery items - so we do that next, before going back to our camp.Read more

As we're leaving Hay I ask Roger if we can stop at Bushy Bend Reserve and do the short loop walk there - to check out the sculptures. As it's a lovely morning, Roger happy to oblige.
We have a nice stroll beside the river (most of it) and I get to see the sculptures.

Our return to Moulamein, so we can collect my raffle prize. We arrive, and park to use the public toilets - and while stopped we decide to go to the Wattle Cafe for a cuppa. Roger has a cappuccino and a couple of dimsims, I have a hot chocolate. Once we've had these, we drive to Edward River Gardens Aged Care facility. Head in and the staff on duty, find and deliver my raffle prize to me. Looks good - a sturdy pull along cart. We'll have to see if we can find uses for it! Say my thank you, and off we drive - now heading for Barham, going to find a nearby spot to camp beside the river.Read more

Sovereign Bend Camp Koondrook VIC

As we're driving along - I've been researching on Wiki Camps and found this camping spot we'll give a try.
We arrive back into Victoria, coming into a town called Koondrook. On quick drive through - looks a nice, neat town. We continue to follow our GPS to find this camp - which is only 4km from Koondrook. We have to go over quite a narrow wooden bridge to get here. Once we get here - we like the camp area - very nice beside the river. The roads here would be no good to get out on if there is rain - but the forecast says rain's a day or so away (if it's correct!) - so we're happy stay. Go for a walk about to check we've got a good spot - we have, so we get our van in a position we like and settle in. We're leaving the ute hitched as we'll only stay tonight. Now lunchtime, so I make us some open toasties and a cuppa. After this - we sit outside and enjoy our peaceful spot (across the river in NSW there's activity we can't see, but can hear wood cutting and machinery). All good - just such a lovely setting and the weather is great - mild and no wind. Roger has lit our campfire, so we are enjoying the ambience and warmth. Get a call from Tegan, which Robert joins in too - so beaut to have a catch up chat. Now relax before tea. Tea tonight, Roger cooks up pork steaks in a pan on the campfire, and has boiled vegetables happening on the stove top in the caravan. I get inspired by the campfire - and decide to have a go at making some flatbread - simple recipe, Greek yoghurt and SR flour. I half the recipe to make 2. 1st one a mess, Rog ate most of that one - 2nd one much better, I enjoyed it. Next time I'll make them before our meal. We continue to sit out at the fire - it's a beauty (Roger found and put a big log on it) - and the night is so clear and calm. We eventually decide to pack up our chairs and head inside to tidy up etc. Roger has his shower while I wash the dishes. We tidy up, now relaxing before bed.
25/05/25 Sunday Another nice sleep in, I get up before Roger at 8am and go for a run. I get back before 9.30am. I have my breakfast, then a shower. Roger has done the dishes and tidied up, so we both make sure all is ready to move on out. Leave this lovely camping spot just after 10am.Read more

We drive about these towns for a look before we move on. We park a couple of times so we can walk about to look at things. The Silo art is in Barham - the rest of my photos are taken in Koondrook. Roger gets a cuppa and a slice of Biscoff cheesecake (he did share this with me) for takeaway smoko before we left. Now heading for Echuca.Read more

Discovery Parks Echuca VIC

Drive through Echuca to come here and get ourselves settled in. This is a G'day Park that we have a membership for - there's a good deal on, so we get a really good sized site No. 137 for 4 nights for $90. No complaints from us - lovely tidy park with nice new amenities. The camp kitchen near us has 2 large ovens - so hope I get the chance to make some more biscuits. We get set up on our site - unhitched, awning and mat out, privacy screen up and chairs out. We're hungry so we decide to drive back into Echuca to get some lunch and find the Visitor Centre.
We return around 5pm, after we've done a small grocery shop from Coles. Unpack groceries, then open a bottle of bubbles to have while we sit outside our van relaxing and taking in our setting. Tea tonight, Roger is airfrying a couple of chicken snitzels which we serve up with a packaged salad. Very nice! After tea, Roger goes and has his shower, I work on updating my budget books - decide there's not too many dishes, so I'll leave them to do with the breakfast dishes tomorrow. Writing this up, then I'll get to bed too.
26/05/25 Monday Roger gets up first just after 7am, I lie in bed and read a book until 7.30am. I get up and go for a shower, as we want to do our washing - this way I can include my towels and PJ's. Roger waiting for me as we'll have a cooked breakfast while our washing on. I get back from my shower - Roger has finished stripping our bed so we can get our 2 loads of washing going - which we do, $5 per load. Roger cooks our bacon and egg specialty at the nearby camp kitchen BBQ - so I prepare our toast, garlic sauce, avocado, tomato and goats cheese etc there as well. Good timing, by the time we've had breakfast (yum) our washing is ready to hang out. We do that, then go and do our breakfast and last night's tea dishes in our caravan. Now going to wait around for our washing to dry - the weather is windy, but threatening to rain (turns out it doesn't). Good chance for me to bake some yoyo biscuits while Roger goes for a walk about this caravan park. This leads into lunch time - we have toasted crumpets, Roger has butter and golden syrup on his 4, I have marinated goats cheese on my 2. Have apples as well with our cuppas. Once we've got our washing in and packed away, we get organised to go for a drive into Echuca - we'll look for a toaster and a safety latch - both of these things need replacing in our caravan. Then we'll check out the wharf area. So off we go - we return here around 4.30pm. It's cold and windy so Roger packs more stuff away from outside ( he had already put the awning in before we left). We have a cuppa in the caravan and listen to an episode of a podcast 'Jake' that we're following. For tea tonight Roger is doing an Aldi roast chicken (marinated and deboned) with roast vegetables and some boiled vegetables - he prepares these and goes and cooks them in the camp kitchen- using the oven and stove there. I take some port over for us to have - along with instant gravy I'll make up to have with our meal. Roger is chatting with a lovely couple (older - married for 50 years), Mitch (retired plumber) and Mary Anne (retired Aged Care) they live near Coffs Harbour. We all end up eating our dinners together (theirs BBQ T-bone steak and vegetables done on the BBQ too and instant gravy as well). Very enjoyable meal together - we tried their seasoning salt on our roast vegetables - Chooki's - their grandson's 'side hustle' which is taking off. Must look it up Trychookis.com.au - very good seasoning! After our meal - the menfolk do the dishes while we all keep chatting, then we all agree we're ready to head back to our vans - so we say our goodnights. Roger goes and has his shower, we're now relaxing before bed. Roger reading, and I'm writing this up.
27/05/25 Tuesday Wake to the sound of gentle rain on the caravan - good excuse to have a lie in. Roger still gets up around 7.30am but I stay in bed reading until 8.30am. I'm planning to go for a 'at least' 20km walk today, just to feel how untrained I am for Serra Terror. If I don't injure myself today - I'd like to 'back it up' with another 20km walk tomorrow.....we'll see! Have a leisurely breakfast and then get my backpack sorted for my 'training' walk. Roger's going to drive me to my walk start point (about 7km away) - I'm using All trails App and am combining a couple of loop walks around Echuca. Roger drops me off at Lions Park just before 10.30am.
He collects me just before 3pm at the Aquatic Reserve - I'm tired but fine (no blisters) - happy with my walk - but well aware it was all 'flat' - not a rise or mountain in sight! We came straight back here to our campsite as Roger stayed in Echuca the whole time I was doing my walk. He said he went for a walk about the streets and found a bite to eat, then sat in the ute listening to True Crime podcasts until I arrived back. Roger starts working on changing the caravan's towing plug, while I go and have a shower to freshen up. Relax until tea - Roger does roast vegetables in the airfryer and some boiled vegetables too that we have with reheated roast chicken and fresh gravy. Roger goes and has his shower, I wash our dishes. Time to relax before bed - I might see what I can find to watch on Prime or iView? No....doesn't have good enough reception.
28/05/25 Wednesday Not raining this morning so happy to get up 7.30am. We have our breakfasts, then I get ready to go on my 'back to back' walk for my last minute ditch to get some kms in my legs to try and get me over the line for my Serra Terror Hike coming up. Not this weekend but the following! Roger's going to drop me off at the same spot as yesterday. We leave around 8.30am.
We return after I finish my walk, get back here before 1.30pm. Roger unpacks the groceries he's bought and has a sandwich (meat and salad) while I go and have a shower. After I get back we decide to do 1 load of washing. Roger takes care of all that - I'm resting in the caravan. I look to see what movies are showing today in Echuca's cinema - at least 3 that I wouldn't mind seeing...run it by Roger -he's happy to go to whatever I choose. I decide on the earliest one at 4.45pm, so I cook up tea, Creamy tomato and salami pasta in the Thermomix, so it can be ready to heat up and eat when we get back. We head off and make it just in time for the movie. We return just after 7pm. Reheat our pasta and eat, Roger also has dessert of yoghurt and banana. I've been 'snacking' on white chocolate coated freeze dried strawberries today - so I don't need anything else to eat now. Roger goes and has his shower, I wash the dishes. Relaxing (Rog reading, I'm writing this) before bed.
29/05/25 Thursday We get up around 7.30am and have leisurely breakfasts. We start our tidy up and organising to move out this morning. I decide to go and have a shower to relax my stiff muscles, while Roger gets our washing off the clothesline and continues getting us ready to leave. Once I'm ready, we leave this nice caravan park just before 10am.Read more

The Great Aussie Beer Shed Echuca

After having our lunch at a Sushi Cafe near the Port of Echuca, and some shopping at the Chocolate store, we head to the nearby tourist information. Here, a lovely lady recommends we come to this place - it's only open on weekends and closes at 5pm. So we do the drive (5km?) to come here. Certainly worthwhile to do! Greeted by Brian (not the owner), very welcoming and he explains the set up before letting us loose to explore ourselves. Lots to look at here - and well presented and displayed. Incredible collections of all sorts - not just beer! Though of course we did purchase drinks as we're allowed to wander about looking while having them!Read more

After finding Harvey Norman, Betta Electrical then Bunnings - we had no luck in finding either the kettle or the safety latch we're after - we'll have to try ordering online. I did buy a card, and Roger 'cashed' his winnings from a gift lotto ticket - $10 (almost balanced each other out!).
We drive to the Port of Echuca - we're we can park for free (4 hours at a time). This gives us the chance to look about here - we end up in a lovely St Anne's Winery shop - cellar door style with gift shop. Have tastings and purchase 2 bottles of bubbles and a 5 litre of tawny port - we pay and leave them to collect before we head back to camp.

Wharf, Paddlesteamers and Museum Echuca

This is a great free activity to check out. Lots to look at, and interesting history to read about. Such fun to wander about too - great how the wharf is being utilised now instead of being left to 'wrack and ruin'.
After we leave here, we go and collect our St Anne's purchases, which Roger takes to our ute, so we can continue looking about the shops. I end up in a Confectionery store, so yes, lollies were bought. Walk for a while - window shopping, lots of good shops - before deciding to call it a day on sightseeing and returning to our ute. Surprised that near where our ute is parked, there are a lot of noisy guinea fowl - not expecting that in the centre of a busy town! A lady walking by, noticed my surprise and came over to chat with me about them. Explaining that the family that live in the house beside where our ute is parked, have bred guinea fowl for years - there used to be hundreds of them, until someone complained and the family were forced to cull them. Well I never, the things you see and learn. Back to our caravan we go.Read more

AllTrails walks about Echuca

Well - my attempt at getting myself ready for this year's Dunkeld's Serra Terror Hike! Figure if I can manage 20km today, and 20km tomorrow without injury - that will be about as good as I'll get for 'training' this year! Not enough for sure - especially as it's flat walking - but enough of a base for me to have a crack! The day, now (rain stopped earlier), is overcast and cold - so I've got my waterproof light coat, Beanie and gloves on - that's keeping me comfy. I'm so glad I'm using the Alltrails App - I would literally be lost without it! It has saved me from going off track at least twice today. Even though I know I should be going up and down hills - I enjoy this walk today - does feel strange to be in my hiking gear in a city! I'm not pushing myself - so the walk takes longer than I expect, and with my phone going flat just at the end of my walk, I'm not exactly sure how far I've walked - would be over my 20kms that I wanted though. AllTrails walk in Echuca

Roger drops me off, again at Lions Park. I've decided to do the same 1st walk I did yesterday, then instead of walking from it to another AllTrails walk, I'll stay with it and just do some 'laps' in the Scenic riverwalk section to get my kms up. Then I can finish up where I've started. So that's what I do. Lovely surprise in the early stage of this walk - Roger rides up to me on an ebike that he's hired. Tells me $45 for 2 hours and off he peddles to enjoy that time! When he picks me up, once I've finished, he tells me he stayed in town (didn't go back to our van) and did some grocery shopping at Aldi. Roger checks if I've eaten lunch - which I have, I packed a peanutbutter sandwich and some snacks to enjoy on my walk. So we're set to go back to our camp. On checking the Alltrails App it tells me I walked 23kms. My little toes are very sore (pressure on top of them - thought this only happened when I do plenty of steep descents - certainly not the case today) and I'm generally tired and achy. Oh dear, I'm looking like I'm in for a very tough Serra Terror event this year!Read more

Get here right on time to watch my chosen movie. $22 each. I chose it thinking it would be a 'feel good' one. Arrr not quite what I was expecting - I had tears streaming at the end of the movie - the sad and happy kind! Glad we saw it - Roger thought it was good too. Head straight back to our 'home' afterwards for tea.Read more

We drive here with the caravan on, so Roger drops me off in the shopping area while he goes and finds a suitable parking spot. One of the first shops I walk towards is a hairdressing salon - it has a sign out saying 'walk ins welcome'. I can see a young lass inside cleaning - not a client in sight, so I try my luck. $70 later I walk out after a 'dry haircut' - feeling much neater (with my hair a fair bit shorter at the back - it needed the dry ends gone!). I had messaged Roger what I was up to - so he's now waiting to go shopping with me. I go get some wine, port and chocolates as gifts - got Gabe and Mary's birthdays coming up, and thank you gifts for Robert and Stacy - for looking after our mail and keeping tabs on Dunkeld house. Roger and I couldn't resist getting some chocolate for our morning smoko. Roger goes and gets a takeaway cappuccino to have as well. Now we're set to take off - have enjoyed our time in Echuca. Now to find a free camp on the way to Bendigo.Read more
