  • Nabawa Recreational Oval Grounds

    14–17 nov. 2024, Australië ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

Arrive at the Nabawa oval - obviously got an event about to happen here as there is a stage, marque tents and portable toilets getting set up (paid workers we'd assume). We park, then walk until we find where our volunteer co-ordinater Andrea McLoughlin (Rog rings her and I can follow where I hear the answering voice coming from) is. On chatting with her we also met the event co-ordinator Jo. Jo shows us where the crew camping is (other side from where we arrived) - so we get back to our ute and van and drive to this area. We choose our spot - we are the 2nd crew campers to arrive, so we select our spot near the 1st caravan (this turns out to be Amanda with her cute little male dog - Amanda already on volunteer duties). We like our spot, good view of event going's on - set up at this stage.
Once settled, we meet Amanda when she comes back to her camp for lunch and to check on her dog. She has been travelling for a couple of years - and is helping her friend Andrea, by volunteering. Rog and I go for a walk about the oval, checking out the layout, and end up going to the Nabawa Tavern for a drink as it's right beside the event area (on purpose of course!) Nice neat hotel, enjoy our beer and cider $18 for the round. On our return walk, we wander back to where Andrea, Jo and Amanda are working - offer if there's anything we could be doing? They're busy doing what they need to do - have nothing for us yet - but at least we offered and they know we're about. We head back to our camp to have lunch, sandwich for Roger, open toasties for me. Relax, reading and watching what's going on around us. During the afternoon, another crew member arrives, Toni, she comes over and introduces herself with a nice big hug. Asks us what the go is with crew camping - so we explain the areas as best we know. Toni decides to set up her camp (tenting) nearby over in the shade of a couple of trees. She sets off to do that - later comes back over to us, she's had abit of a disaster with her set up - with the gusty wind her gazebo (light weight frame) that she wasn't able to secure well because of the hard ground (wish we'd known Rog would have helped secure) has blown over and snapped and bent 'legs'. We go to her site to assess and help. The gazebo frame is a 'write off' and Toni was relying on it as her tent is one that attaches to a frame. Decision is made to put out her ute awning and see if we can rig up her tent onto it. With some improvisation, and all hands and feet on deck (because of wind) this is achieved. We go back to reading our books at our camp and Roger fires up our BBQ and gets a roast going - boned leg of lamb which we'll have with roast spuds, pumpkin, carrot and corn cobs. Andrea (our co-ordinator) calls Rog, to see if we'd be happy to help Toni put up the bar signage. Of course we are, so this we do. Basically Toni and I work out where we think the signs look best - and Rog gets them up. Looks good. By now, time to have our tea, which Roger has been able to keep ducking back to, to have cooked and ready. We enjoy this roast with boiled beans, peas and brocolli. Too full to worry about dessert. Tidy up, do our dishes. Rog has his shower in our van (self sufficient camping no power) and we relax until bedtime. One of our neighbouring crew ladies (either Amanda or Toni)- is a hobby musican as we hear guitar and singing as we settle in our van for the night.
15/11/24 Friday. Wake up around 6am, gusty wind still about - and our awning is handling it well. I lie in bed and read until 7am, Rog gets up and has his breakie. Once I'm up and had my porridge and cuppa, we wander about the event area - Roger goes and checks in with Andrea, sees Amanda who explains our parking duties and where we'll be working. Also told we can head to the Tavern to have lunch and dinner today - our shifts 12.30pm to 7.30pm. So we'll get organised for our shift and head over for lunch at 11.30am. Relax about camp until then. On schedule for our lunch at the Tavern - there is a menu for volunteers and the selection is great. Roger has fish and chips, served with salad, I have a chicken aussie parma with salad and chips - very good food. We walk to our shift area, Roger goes direct, while I detour to be official (turns out not required) and sign in and collect a hi vis vest. No one at the designated volunteer tent/office so I head off to join Roger. Doesn't happen initially as I have to pass another volunteer parking area P1 - and Toni who is rostered there 'snaffles me' to help her. I work here with Toni for a good hour or so, before another vollie, Ky, arrives and Andrea calls by to ask if I'm right to go to P2 where Rog is. Of course I am, so I finish off this shift working next with Roger and Lisa, then Roger and I working with Gerald and Leanne who take over from us once Fish (Andrea's husband) arrives around 6pm. So Rog and I get to finish this shift early. We head back to our caravan and drop our gear off, then go to the Tavern with Toni, and meet up with Amanda for our tea. We all have volunteer vouchers for meals that are ready to serve from the bain marie. I have chicken and beef noodles, Roger has butter chicken and rice. Roger buys us a drink, beer and a cider. After tea we head back to our caravan so we can shower. I shower first so I can go to Amanda's camp next door to catch up with her and Toni for a drink and to listen to Toni play her guitar and sing some songs. Toni's not bad singer - very easy listening and sings songs Amanda and I know. I don't stay too long as I know I've got an early start in the morning. Before going back to our van I go catch up with Jo (event co-ordinator) to get our event staff passes (on lanyards) and our volunteer T-shirts. Get back to our van, Roger has showered and gone to bed - bed time for me too.
16/11/24 Saturday. We're up around 6am, have muesli and cuppa for our breakfast, get organised and head off to be ready for our 7am shift start.
When we finish this shift we'll be right to attend Yellowfields Music Festival. Event finishes around 10pm - we're quickly back to our caravan (too cold to hang about and be social!). Roger has a shower, while I make myself a chai (milk) cuppa to warm up. Then happily to bed. Been a great day.
17/11/24 Sunday. Wake around 6.30am, Roger up for his breakfast, I lie in and read until 7am before getting up and making my porridge etc. I have a shower while Roger getting things packed away ready for us to leave. Once I'm dressed and helped with a few packing requirements - we're ready to move. We wander around and say our thanks and goodbyes to people we've met. Andrea - thanks us for our work. Job done. Leave around 9am.

  • Yellowfields Volunteering - Parking

    15–16 nov. 2024, Australië ⋅ ☁️ 29 °C

Roger and I - have 2 shifts working together at Yellowfields Music Festival. We are rostered on at P2 - Parking area 2 - which is allocated for caravans and larger RV's.
    Friday 15/11/ 24 12.30pm to 7.30pm
This shift we arrive earlier - abit after 12 noon, and we are 'relieved' earlier too - around 6pm.
On this shift we got to work with Toni, Lisa, Ky, Gerald and Leanne (at different times). Gerald, Leanne, and Fish were the ones to stay on after we finished.
    Saturday 16/11/24 Event Day 7am to 2pm.
This turns out to be a VERY quiet shift - we no longer have to use the portable scanner to scan campers tickets, all we have to do is sight their camp ticket, give them their green 'camping' wristband and park them in an orderly fashion in the paddock. We are surprised to find that there are only 3 more campers in here from when we finished at 6pm yesterday. It is just Rog and I to start off - and there's not really anything to do! Apart from try and help answer campers (already in the paddock) questions about the event. So it is total 'overload' to have Gerald and Leanne arrive at 9am to help us! The 4 of us just enjoy a sit down and a good chat, pretty much for the rest of the shift. Could count on one hand how many campers arrived in our section today (and most before 9am). Andrea and Jo - at different times - come and check how we're doing - they can see we're not up to much - so Jo makes the call, that we can all finish at 2pm - as Gerald and Leanne were rostered to 3.30pm. Happy days - we pack the check in area up just before 2pm, and Rog and I get a lift with Jerry and Leanne back to our caravan.

  • Yellowfields 2024 Nabawa WA

    16 november 2024, Australië ⋅ 🌬 29 °C

After we get back from our volunteer shift we walk over to the Tavern to have some lunch. $20 voucher supplied for volunteering, and there's cooked food ready (bain marie) to serve. Roger has a plate of chicken and beef noodles with some chips, I have butter chicken with rice and 2 curry puffs. Then back to our caravan to freshen up and get changed. Roger goes into the event before me to find a position to set up our chairs. I get phone calls, 1st from Robert re to find clean sheets for bed in Dunkeld, then from Jordan Plunkett to let us know Dani has delivered their son, Jackson George John Plunkett, 6 to 7 weeks premature. All doing well, Jackson has been transferred (flown) to Melbourne for best care and Jordan and Dani will follow to join him tomorrow. 🤞🥰 I go and join Rog at the event - he's got us a beaut position with our camp chairs up near the stage and close to the 'dancing' standing area. It's come up very windy and as the day progresses it gets cold. Glad Roger and I can just walk across the oval (be less than 300m?) to our caravan to rug up etc as needed. Bit cheeky, but I sneak back to have a couple of drinks too! The event bar prices are expensive. Roger does buy a drink. Roger also helps Toni pack away her tent and awning at her camp as the wind has wrecked her set up. She'll be camping in Amanda's gazebo (out front of Amanda's caravan which is a wind block) tonight. The event goes off well, there seems to be a good size crowd (we think they came close to their expected 3000) and the set up is great with food vendors etc. We enjoyed the performances of Beccy Cole, Dylan Wright and I was happily in the 'mosh pit' for Adam Brand and Shannen Noll. Performances finished just after 10pm - and it was amazing how quickly the crowd just left! Think the cold weather helped with that!
Great event - hope it continues annually like the organisers hope (Nabawa Tavern proprietors being the main payers). Shall watch with interest 🤞 Think they've got a fair bit right - just needs some tweeks - which is understable for 1st big event held here.

  • Nabawa Valley Tavern

    17 november 2024, Australië ⋅ 🌬 25 °C

We drive here with the caravan before leaving Nabawa. We decide to fill in some time and have a cuppa here. Gives us the chance to see the set up they have organised with their offer of 'buffet breakfast' for event campers (any anyone else around). Think they did it Saturday morning as well, from 8am Buffet Breakfast for $15 per head. OMG! Wish we had come over for breakfast.....their spread of food looks amazing and delicious.
Roger has a large cappuccino and I have a hot chocolate. We realise we've got time to fill in before arriving at our lunch destination (it doesn't open until 11am and it's only a short drive away) - so Roger does some 'googling' to find there's a small township on the way that has a museum we can check out. Off we go.

What a wonderful community here! This little township has got a wonderful museum that we're so glad we got the chance to check out. While we are here we enjoy a phone call (WhatsApp) from Tegan. Her main news that she's looking to include Lev in her dog walking business. Full of plans - we wish them well. Also let's us know Canada has a 'specials event' for air flights coming up on a Tuesday in early December - could be handy for Robert and Stacy, as well as for Rog. Must remember to follow up on that!
Enjoy our time in Nanson in their Chapman Valley Historical Society Museum - incredible array of nostalgic items, well set out and looked after. Lots of work has been put in to make it so good. Credit to all involved.

This restaurant Burnt Barrel is today's choice for our lunch stop - we thought we'd come here before heading on to Kalbarri.
Neil McIntosh and his partner Amanda. recommended this place worth checking out while we're in its vincinity. Thank you.
Glad we did - lovely spot and food is delicious. American style smokehouse and cooking. Would not be healthy to eat this way too often I'm sure! For us, as something different, it's a treat. Roger has Bird & Piggy burger and I have Meat Combo plate. Do not leave hungry and bank balance lower.

  • Tasman Holiday Park Kalbarri

    17–22 nov. 2024, Australië ⋅ 🌬 29 °C

This caravan park very central in Kalbarri and we are quite happy with the stay 3 nights get 4th night free offer - this gets it at $36 per night powered. We are allocated a drive through site No. 86, so go and comfortably settle on it. Once we're set up. it's quite warm and we've realised that on a Sunday the Tourist info won't be open (not at this time in their season) - we just relax reading for the afternoon. Roger studies up what we can do while here, then goes for a walk. I go for a walk later, then we met up out the front of the caravan park to watch the sunset. Very beautiful. Time for tea - we don't need much, still recovering from our large lunch - so Roger chops us up some nice salad, he has some leftover cold meat with his. Shower time for Roger, I get myself writing this to be up to date - taking me a while! Time for reading my book in bed. Goodnight.
18/11/24 Monday. Today's our 29th Wedding Anniversary! When we wake up - we thank each other and wish each other a happy wedding anniversary. We haven't worried about cards and presents - we're content to enjoy our day together. On getting up and looking at my phone - dear friends are congratulating us and wishing us the best too. Make porridge for both of us, then get ready to walk across the road for the 8.45am pelican feeding. This is great - the volunteer doing the 'show' is good fun and shares her knowledge on our Australian pelican species. Next we go to the Kalbarri Visitor centre - this is full of lovely touristy gifts and helpful staff. I purchase a cute card for Jordan & Dani re Jackson's arrival and a Kalbarri hat pin. We decide to try and hire some ebikes for the morning/day - staff wish us luck as the operator is difficult to catch up with now it's not peak season. This is the case - we phone, then call at the business shop (sign is out advertising bike hire) - to be told they're not about - try again later! We decide we'll change our plans and go for a drive and check out the south side of Kalbarri. Drive to the Natural Bridge (checking out places of interest along the coastline). There is a walk from here - Bigurda Trial - that I'd like to do, as it's one way, Roger is agreeable that I do it and he'll drive and meet me at the end. It means he'll have some time to wait/fill in - but he kindly doesn't mind. I start the walk at 10.40am and finish it around 1pm. Roger has already checked out the places I walked through. So once he picks me up (at Eagle Gorge) we drive to the next coastline point of interest Pot Alley - and both do the walk to the beach here - another stunning spot. We're more than ready to have some lunch now so we drive back to our caravan. I make myself a couple of open toasties, and Roger makes up a couple of meat with salad sandwiches. We follow this with a cuppa, then drive back to where we were up to and do another walk together called the Nature Trail from Mushroom Rock including Rainbow Valley. We're warm and tired after this - so drive back, quick drive by a couple more spots on our way back, to have showers and I decide to get a couple of loads of laundry going as well. We're having pizzas for tea tonight so Roger prepares our toppings - we're using bought pizza bases. He cooks them (2) one at a time in our BBQ. Very nice! We have 'cheers' to our anniversary - it's been a beaut day. A lovely young lady, Jazz, a camping neighbour, calls by to let us know there's a couple of tawny frog mouth owls sleeping in a nearby tree. Happily get some photos. Now tidy up and relaxing before bed.
19/11/24 Tuesday. Oh dear for all our washing still out on the park's clothesline - during the night we were woken up by loud thunder - with a decent storm started...so when we get up it's wet and miserable. That's the end of our original plans for today - we both agree too wet to go walking about gorges. Mutual decision to just have a relax about camp day - which we do. Food - breakie, usual - lunch, usual and tea, very nice pork steaks (Roger cooks on our BBQ) and boiled vegetables. We did have an outing late morning as Rog wanted to get some grocery items. We went for a drive, poking around Kalbarri township, then 4km out the road to checkout Meanarra Hill Lookout (recommended). As it's still drizzling and wet was a quick look (didn't do the walk or take photos) and back to grocery shop, then camp.
After tea, tidy up, Roger goes and showers and then to bed to read. I stay up way too late sorting my emails, budget books etc.
20/11/24 Wednesday. Still too gloomy and overcast to do the early morning sunrise loop walk we're planning to do - so have a lie in and get up around 7am and have our usual breakfasts. Washing is still on the line, fingers crossed we'll get it dried today - looks like the morning clearing and wind meant to be about later. Decide we'll go for a drive in Kalbarri National Park and see what we manage to check out (the walk we're wanting to do requires people to start before 7am - it's a 9km loop, so we can't do it today). We drive out of camp just after 8am.
Return from our days outing around 1pm to have lunch. We get our washing off the line 1st as yippee it's finally dry (just as well we got it off when we did - as a light shower of rain came along later in the day). We've realised that to do the walk we want to do - we need to book another night here, so we do, this extra night costs $45. Lunch is sandwiches for Roger, open toasties for me. Relaxing afternoon - we find out we've been successful in getting volunteering positions (we don't know what yet - rosters still to be sorted) for The Man From Snowy River Bush Festival 2025 held in April at Corrong VIC. The 'down side' to this lovely news is that they're 'sold out' on camping spaces so at this time we've got nowhere to camp with our caravan. We've let them know we'll need something - see what eventuates...? Tea tonight - we go over to the camp kitchen and prepare and cook tacos (savoury mince, soft tortillas and chopped salad). While here we get chatting with another Victorian couple who are on holiday this way, to catch up with their son - he's FIFO (mining) from Perth and holidaying here with them ❤️ After tea we go have showers, then tidy up dishes. Roger having an early night for our planned 🤞early start tomorrow. I'll just get this up to date and then join him.
21/11/24 Thursday. Early start today - Roger's alarm goes off at 4.15am. Up we get and get ourselves organised - we're heading out into Kalbarri NP to go see the sunrise and do the loop walk from Nature's Window. Leave by 4.45am. Get to the parking area after 5am and start our walk around 5.30am. Back to our ute around 8am. Now time to drive the short distance to Skywalk so we can have breakfast at the Skywalk Cafe (opens 8am). A little disappointed with menu - only banana bread or toasted sandwiches on offer this morning. We had toasted sandwiches and a cuppa. Back to Kalbarri to our van. Relax and do very little. Lunch we make pancakes (Thermomix). Afternoon Roger does maintenance stuff and I catch up with Barb, then Leigh by phone. Barb just back from a fantastic Vietnam holiday - Leigh just sorting himself from his dog Splinter dying last Monday (kidney disease), today he's just picked up a greyhound from a greyhound rehoming organisation. Krispee Kreme is this female dogs name. Roger calls Robert for a chat. After our phone calls we go for a walk to check out a local brewery. Once we get back - I decide to do some cheese and biccies before tea Shortly after this is when we catch up on the news that Tarsh and Will have welcomed Josie Joy to their family (early but all good). I ring Raels for update - such happy news. Roger and I decide we're really not in need of tea tonight we've had enough to eat. Roger has his shower, now we'll be happy for an early night to bed.
22/11/24 Friday. Wake up before 6am so decide I'll go for a run, back at 7.15am. So enjoyed this - along the foreshore then followed the path called the Melaleuca Trail and get to Jakes Bay before returning. I have a shower, then Roger has prepared breakfast- he cooks up the bacon, eggs and mushrooms, while I do the toast and put on the relish, sliced tomato and marinated goats cheese. After tidy up and making sure the vans right to go, we've got time to go and watch the daily pelican feeding again. We do - different volunteer today, so learn some other aspects about pelicans. After a recent incident (31 Oct) of a pelican trying to eat a live seagull and a video going 'viral' - we have our own 'reinactment' today - luckily the seagull eventually escaped itself! Do wonder if this 30 year tradition will be allowed to continue......
Ready to roll, so off we go....leaving Kalbarri via the Ajana- Kalbarri Road (we arrived coming in Horrocks Rd/ White Cliffs Rd/George Grey Dr).

    18 november 2024, Australië ⋅ ☁️ 26 °C

This is beside the foreshore - opposite our caravan park. It's held everyday 8.45am to 9.15am. Ran now by volunteers, who request a gold coin donation to help cover food costs (for feeding). It has been happening for almost 50 years now - started by a fisherman living nearby. It's for wild pelicans - so totally at their discretion as to whether they come or not. Can be days where none show up. We're in luck, at least 7 come along today.
Rog and I were happy just to learn about and watch today. People are welcome to feed the fish supplied to them - we just didn't come prepared to get 'fishy smell' on us lol!
