  • Ciccetti and Canals

    April 7, 2024 in Italy ⋅ ☀️ 13 °C

Walked and walked Venice in the mist and in the baking sun 🌞
Wonderful sights around every corner... lots of dead ends, but that's what makes it fun.
Lovely venetian snacks (ciccetti) and so relaxing (out of the main drag)Read more

  • Boat to Burano

    April 8, 2024 in Italy ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

So we hung up our feet for a day on the water using a one day vaporetto pass. Bloody brilliant. Dropped in on Burano and Murano and popped up and down the grand canal.
We ended the day with a bit of culture in the form of a violin concerto in Vivaldi's church. 🎶🎻Read more

  • Culture and cicchette

    April 9, 2024 in Italy ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

Leasurley day today. We took in a little culture at the Accedemia gallery where there were many religious depictations of the life of Christ, etc. and other historical, mythical and and impressive paintings, including Picasso and Matiste.
We've eaten well and drunk our way through the day in some great, out of the way establishments.

  • Rail to Roma

    April 10, 2024 in Italy ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C

A very fast and efficient train journey to Rome.
What a contrast from the relaxed traffic free serenity of Venice's backwaters to the busy traffic and tourist laiden streets of Rome.
God knows what it's like in the middle of summer!!
Anyway, after planning our itinery and a late lunch in a quiet backstreet, we fought our way to a late entry to the colloseum. Thankfully, the crowds dispersed in time to stroll round more freely.

  • Romin round rocks

    April 11, 2024 in Italy ⋅ ⛅ 10 °C

Up early to beat the masses. Successfully navigated the Palatine virtually to ourselves (it was so peaceful up there among the gardens and trees) and the Roman Forum with ease.
After a leg vitalising coffee and Torta di Mela, we ventured underground to see some more old rocks... 🏛🪨
Local side street for lunch and more wondering along the river and back streets.

  • It's my birthday

    April 12, 2024 in Vatican City ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

Early to rise and off to The Vatican.
8.00am and a queue as long as your arm. Jumped ahead at our alloted time but still qued to clear security.
It's amazing how efficiently people disperse and the museum manages to stay calm and relaxed. The Sistine chapel is smaller than imagined. (Tone sneeked a photo) The art and artefacts from around the world are amazing.
Tony managed to sneek us into the front of the que for St. Peters Basillica. It is vast and highly elaborate inside, but i can't help wondering if all this oppulence is necessary in the pursuit of devotion to a religion?

  • Fountains and food

    April 12, 2024 in Italy ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

We came upon an Italian police expo. 🚓🚔 They have some mighty fine cars in their fleet! Lovely lunch of fried artichokes and carpaccio and amble in a quiet artsy side street neer the Spanish Steps, which, of course, was full of foreign folk. We beifly stopped at the Trevi fountain as it too was crazy busy.
It was quite hot today, so a few spritz were required. 🍷🍾🍹
