We arrive in Georgetown (Janjanbureh), a small island in the Gambia river from where slaves from the deeper regions of Africa were shipped to the coast. This horrific piece of British history popps up again and again and is very much alive in the consciousness of local people. No country had slavery so thoroughly organised as the British.
