A Walk to the End of the World

    14. oktober 2019, Spanien ⋅ 🌧 14 °C

Today is Day 1 on an additional walk to Finisterre (60 miles) and Muxia. (17.5 miles). Both border the Atlantic Ocean. As long as my body holds up, I'm going for it. My flight back to Paris is on Nov 4 and back to Phoenix on Nov 5. Today I walked 13.6 miles to Negreira through eucalyptus forests, picturesque hamlets and over a legendary 13th century bridge across the Rio Tambre. It's a different Camino. People are tired and quieter and trying to process having walked 500 miles and the lessons that were learned. I'm tired but rested and ready to spend some time at the ocean. It rained most of the day with patches of sun here and there. It was refreshing and I managed to stay dry and warm.Læs mere

  • #2 Day Santa Marina

    15. oktober 2019, Spanien ⋅ 🌧 13 °C

Today walked 13 miles west toward the coast in the rain. It rained off and on. Stayed warm and slightly damp. It was fun walking the back roads and counting the horreos. I counted 48 today. One day on the Camino Frances I counted 80. They intrigue me. They are a protected building and cannot be torn down. So I'm in a 10 bed albergue tonight. I managed to snag a couple of blankets so I will be warm tonight. Everyone is trying to dry out their things. It looks like a refugee camp around here. More rain tomorrow. As long as I can stay warm and dry I'm okay with it. It should be cleared up by Friday when I get to the coast. Dinner in an hour: Steak and french fries! Ice cream for dessert. I'll have to change my ways when I get back!Læs mere

  • Day #3 Hospital on the way to the Coast

    16. oktober 2019, Kroatien ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

Today was an amazing day! I walked 13 miles in the rain. It was very adventurous and wild beautiful country through back road villages and farm land. There was lots of rain running down the roads and found myself walking through puddles of water. Managed to get my feet soaked and clothes damp fully loaded with rain gear. I loved it walking through the hills and enjoying God's creation. Saw very few hikers on the trail. I managed to take a few pictures and even saw foxglove and beautiful mushrooms on the roadside. I felt very grateful to have seen this part of Spain. The wild raging rivers and hills reminded me of Oregon and the green farmlands bring me back to my childhood in Michigan. I feel full of gratitude today. I haven't seen a glimpse of the ocean yet. It's pretty foggy and overcast. Maybe tomorrow.Læs mere

  • Day #4 Walk to Corcubion

    17. oktober 2019, Spanien ⋅ ⛅ 13 °C

Started out about 8:15 am. Stopped for coffee, yogurt and banana. My usual breakfast. The stars are out and it has stopped raining. Put the rain gear on as some light rain is expected. Today is a 10 mile hike to Corcubion, a city on the Atlantic Ocean. The weather is in mid 60's and very little wind today. So I reached the ocean around 12:30 and stopped for some lentil soup before pressing on to my hotel on the Atlantic Ocean. The first time to see this ocean. I'm staying by the beach tonight and enjoying the sound of the waves breaking the shoreline. Hope to find some good fish for dinner. I have two more hiking days and I will hang that up for this trip. There was a light rain off and on as I hiked to the ocean. Think I will head down to the beach while the sun is shining and look for a good seafood restaurant. There's always another church and another cross along the way.Læs mere

  • Day 5 Finisterre

    18. oktober 2019, Spanien ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

A Walk to the end of the Earth: Camino 0.0 kg. An overcast day for walking. The rain held off today while I finished Camino Santiago to Finisterre. It was a less crowded trail, breathtaking ocean views, shaded forests and the lighthouse at the end of the world. I really enjoyed this part of the Camino. I'm staying in Finisterre in a nice modern hostel. It's very clean. As I'm waiting for dinner my laundry is being done by the management. I will stay tonight and Saturday night with my eye on the weather. I have one trek to complete: Finisterre to Muxia 17.4 miles in two days. So my time is winding down in Europe. I have enjoyed myself very much.Læs mere

  • More of Finisterre

    20. oktober 2019, Spanien ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

Today is another wonderful day for me. Raining off and on. Sun shining off and on as well. Managed to find some more beach treasures. Now which ones do I take and which ones do I leave. Tough choice for me. Had a picnic lunch high on a bluff overlooking the town. A nice restful day. Tomorrow heading north to Muxia. Went to a noon mass and was blessed by local children singing and taking part in the service. It was nice to see a vibrant alive church teaching the next generation about God's ways. Time to get some dinner and head off to bed.Læs mere

Had a nice 10 mile hike this am. Had a nice sunrise and headed north. Took the beach trail so I had several views of the ocean. A light mist now and then. The views are beautifull. It's a sunny comfortable day. Staying in an albergue at my half way point to Muxia. Dinner at 7. Took a shower and washed out a few clothes for tomorrow. Hanging out at the Albergue until dinner. • Muxia

    25. oktober 2019, Spanien ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

Today was an awesome day. Packed a lunch and went exploring. Found a new secluded beach and enjoyed my lunch there. Discovered an area next to the beach that is of historical value. The little houses are mill houses. The people used to bring their grain here to be milled into floor. The beach is called Area Maior (Big Sand). The River is called Black River. I found it as I was looking for another trail that I would like to hike another time. 140 mile coastal trail connecting 5 different light houses, walking through small fishing villages.Læs mere

Enjoying the last day in Muxia, a beautiful sunny warm day. Taking the bus in about 3 hours going to another little fishing villsge: A Coruna. Checking out a new Camino for next year.🤗🤗

  • A Coruna

    28. oktober 2019, Spanien ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

Well I had a very interesting day being a tourist. I spent some time on the beach. I also walked about town today. I climbed an old Roman Tower of Hercules and discovered a welcoming mermaid to her city. The Hercules tower is part of the heritage of this city. It is a a military fortress as well as the world's oldest lighthouse dating back to the first century built by the Romans. It is an archaeological site as well as a world heritage site. Picasso spent part of his childhood in this city drawing and painting the Tower on several occassions. Picture of me from the top of the tower.Læs mere

  • A Coruna

    29. oktober 2019, Spanien ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

A Coruna turns out to be a city of 245,000 people. I didn't have it right on that one. Spent my time at the waterfront today going through museums and churches and just walking about town. I still want to go to the Picasso museum tonight. I've been walking a lot around town the last couple of days. Went through "The Castle of San Anton", a history museum of a military fortress built in 1588. Another Camino begins here and ends in Santiago. Old churches and a monastery of Santa Barbara.Læs mere

  • Back in Muxia

    31. oktober 2019, Spanien ⋅ 🌧 17 °C

Rained off and on today. Went exploring again and found a new trail connecting one side of the peninsula with the other side. Found another beautiful beach and more beach glass. How am I going to get all of it home?? Went to an evening mass being that this is all old saints day here in Spain. 5 people at mass. Came back and had my hair shampooed and styled. For $17 I couldn't resist! Booked my taxi from Paris airport to and from my motel on Monday and Tuesday. Everything is in place. Just have to sign in for my flights and I will be on my way. Yea! Pictures of new beach I found and of the poles that are still used to dry fish as of old days gone by. This area still holds on to this tradition.Læs mere
