• Beautiful campsite on Rio Pangue, a tributary of the Bio Bio River. Perfect weather too 😃
To head south, we caught a train to Chillán. A good service🚆Themed Mexican restaurant: El Chavo del Ocho. We were not as happy as this photo suggests 🤣Weird but very strong church built after Chillán was flattened by an earthquake in 1939Chillán plaza; typical for a South American townThis church didn't fall down in the earthquakeFabulous scenery while drivingFinally camping!View from campWalked up the road along the river - picturesque 😊 and we saw no-one!Gorge -like; viewed on our walk up-riverNice spot for a quick dip - it's freezing 🥶; snowmelt from volcano upstreamPlenty of time to lie around at camp 😀Campsite swim spot; had it all to ourselvesCabin in the woods (due to forecast rain); near CuracautínBeautiful forest - mostly Coigue/beech (Nothofagus dombeyi)Doggy Igor. On the road, camping 🏕️

    20.–23. jan., Chile ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

Mark searched Maps for a campsite surrounded by forest and within about 3 hours' drive of Concepcion. That's how we ended up at a beautiful place right on a rushing, glacial river.

To get there, we went by train to the end of the line at Chillán, and the next day by bus to Concepcion to pick up our rental car and hit the road to pick up supplies (horrible shopping in Los Angeles town) and on to remoter parts.

It was so great to laze around the campsite and enjoy the river! See pics.

Leaving there, we restocked in Mulchén (much easier shopping in this small town) and headed south for our next destination, stopping the night in a little cabin. The cabin is located on a 70-year old lava/pyroclastic flow from Volcán Llaima, and surrounded by young trees (largely Podocarpus/ beech), though by the river there were still some older trees that survived the 1957 eruption.

From there: Conguillo National Park - next post 🤩
