    Oamaru turned out to be quiet a nice town. We went to the Oamaru lookout where we had lunch and played our new game bananagrams 🍌
    We also wondered around town and saw some neoclassical buildings, the Victorian Precinct and a pretty cool playground.Read more

  • Steampunk HQ

    Oamaru claims to be the steampunk capital of the world. A good way to describe steampunk is that it's a vision of the future, as dreamed up by a person living in the 19th century. We visited the Steampunk HQ which has a collection of artwork and displays in the steampunk style.Read more

  • Elephant Rocks

    The elephant rocks are a collection of large weathered limestone rocks. They are even featured in the Narnia films. Because it's allowed to climb on them we grabed our climbing shoes and did a bit of bouldering.Read more

  • Mount Cook

    Mount Cook was beautiful. We walked the Hooker Valley Track and enjoyed every bit of it. We got to see the snow capped Mount Tasman and Mount Cook, the highest mountain in NZ. The track ended at the mostly frozen Hooker Lake.Read more

  • Peel Forest

    Quick stop in the Peel Forest. We went to see a really big tree (31m tall, circumference of 9m, over 1000 years old) and a rather unspectacular waterfall.

    Mount Sunday was the film site for Edoras in the Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers movie. So we obviously had to go there. This LOTR location is set in a super beautiful landscape in the middle of the country with nothing else (apart from a few cows 🐄) around.Read more

  • Hanmer Springs Thermal Pools

    With our south island trip nearly coming to an end, we decided to treat ourselves to a spa day. The Hanmer Springs Thermal Pools were the perfect place to do so. There were all sorts of different natural hot pools (34 - 42 °C) with different minerals like sulphur, calcium and sodium and also four really fun slides.Read more

  • Kaikoura

    Our plan was to go to Kaikoura to go whale watching. Unfortunately the tours weren't going out during alert level 2. Hopefully we'll be able to come back some time.
    Instead of whale watching we went to the Kaikoura lookout and Kean Point where we saw some seals and our friends Emile and Pauline.Read more

  • Ferry to the North Island

    This time we took the Interislander Ferry from Picton on the South Island to Wellington on the North Island. The ferry was a bit delayed but at least the sea wasn't as rough as the last time and we also had our friends Emile and Pauline with us to talk to and play games with.Read more

  • Wellington Zoo

    Until the end of June the entry for Wellington Zoo is for free so we, including our friends Emile and Pauline, decided now is the best time to go. We were really happy to finally see Kea's even though it wasn't in the wild and they were doing grown up things 😂 we did get to see their pretty colours though. We also saw an Emu in an open enclosure, Capybaras, running giraffes (sooo cool, they look like they're running in slow motion 😂) and otters.Read more

  • Belgian Friends

    After meeting Emile and Pauline in Auckland at the start of our travels we met up with them loads of times in the North and South Island and became good friends. We took the ferry back to Wellington together and then spent a couple of days there with them. On our last night together we did a pub quiz in the Green Man Pub and on their last day we went to the Wellington Chocolate Factory. Now they're off back to Auckland and then home.
    It was lovely meeting the two of you and we'll definitely be seeing you again, either in Belgium, Germany or somewhere else in the world ❤

  • Zealandia II

    We went to Zealandia for a second time, as like the zoo it's free until the end of June. We had a nice time walking around and spotting some of the rare birds. This time there is the cute North Island Robin and Kakas in the pictures.Read more

  • The Weta Cave

    Weta Workshop is a special effects and prop company based in Wellington. Producing props for TV and film alongside directors such as Peter Jackson, Weta went on to work on The Lord Of The Rings and The Hobbit films. Weta hand crafted just under 50,000 individual pieces for Lord Of The Rings alone. They also hired a self taught blacksmith who hand forged all of the swords for the films.     We went to two board game places, the Caffeinated Dragon and Counter Culture, with Hannah, Max, Stephen and Kayla. It was great fun drinking coffee/beer while trying out new board games 🐉

  • Hostel Dinners

    We had a couple of dinners at the hostel with a our hostel friends. One of them was a pot luck dinner where everyone cooks a different dish and brings it to the table for everyone and another one a pizza night. Manny also made a lovely strawberry cake for Max's farewell.Read more

  • Red Rocks

    We treated ourselves to fish and chips and took it to the Red Rocks. Lovely spot for a picnic. We also found googly eyes on a penguin sign 🐧

  • Mittens

    Mittens is a famous Wellington cat. He has an owner but during the day Mittens likes to wonder the streets of Te Aro. He loves to have people around him, goes into shops and flats, sometimes even takes elevators or jumps into cars. A couple of months ago Wellingtons mayor gave Mittens the key of the city. He is now officially called Mittens - His Royal Floofiness. The Wellington museum also put on a little exhibition on Mittens.Read more

  • Rugby

    We went to watch the rugby. We saw the Hurricanes (Wellington) play the Blues (Auckland) at the Sky Stadium in Wellington. The Hurricanes won. It was great fun watching the game with our friends 🏉

  • Mid-Year Christmas Dinner

    We had a mid-year christmas dinner with our hostel family. Everybody made some food and shared it with the others. Lucy and Isi, the Germans, made Käsespätzle and Jake made really good roast potatoes. We also had roast pork, stuffing, lots of roast vegetables, pumpkin mash, deviled eggs, salad, mulled wine and lots of great desserts.Read more
