New Plymouth

We stopped in New Plymouth for a day to explore the city. We had a look at the Te Rewa Rewa Bridge (if you look closely you can see Mount Taranaki through the bridge) and the Wind Wand at the waterfront. We also walked through Pukekura Park and Brooklands Park which included a free zoo. The inner city of New Plymouth had lots of awesome street art and a cool looking museum 🤖En savoir plus

Dawson Falls and Wilkies Pools

After New Plymouth we drove into the Egmont National Park. As it was such a nice day we decided to go straight to the 18m high Dawson Falls. After spending the night close to the falls with a great view of Mount Taranaki (see next post) we went for a hike to see the Wilkies Pools.En savoir plus

Mount Taranaki

We camped overnight at the Dawson Falls Visitors Centre from where we had an amazing view of Mount Taranaki. Absolutely awe inspiring 🗻

Forgotten World Highway

We drove along the scenic Forgotten World Highway that goes from Stratford to Taumaranui. Located on this highway is Whangamomona, which declared itself an independent Republic in 1989. Other highlights of this route were the handcarved Moki Tunnel and Mount Damper Falls.En savoir plus

Waitomo Caves

We did a tour of Mangawhitikau Cave, one of the Waitomo Caves. The tour included abseiling, walking and tubing around the cave system, seeing glow worms, squeezing through tiny holes and climbing back out of the cave. We had lots of fun! 🐛💡En savoir plus

Kiwi House

Because it's so hard to see a Kiwi in the wild (they are nocturnal and very shy) we went to the Kiwi House and Native Bird Park in Otorohanga. They had two nocturnal houses and we actually managed to see three Kiwis which was pretty amazing.

Kawhia Beach

After finding our camping spot for the night we decided to head to the beach. We found this lovely beach in Kawhia and had a cup of tea while enjoying the view.

Bridal Veil Falls

We saw these amazing waterfalls on our way to Raglan. There were four different viewing decks from where you could see the 55m high falls.

Raglan

Raglan is a cute little coastal town known for it's surfing beaches. After a coffee from Raglan Roast we went to Ngarunui Beach and Manu Bay to watch the surfers and waves. Manu Bay has one of the longest left-hand breaks in the world 🌊En savoir plus

Te Toto Gorge

We stopped at Te Toto Gorge for this amazing view of the rugged west coast. From the viewpoint it's a sheer 100m drop to the bottom of the Gorge.

Hamilton Gardens

The Hamilton Gardens were amazing. They display all sorts of different garden styles. Pictures are from the Paradise Collection which included a Chinese, a Renaissance and a Maori Garden and from the Fanatasy collection which included a Picturesque and a Surrealist Garden.En savoir plus

Froggatt Edge

We finally went climbing! We bought ourselves a rope and went to Froggatt Edge in the Waikato Region. It's a beautiful rock with many good routes. We had lots of fun being back on the wall 🧗🏼🧗🏼‍♀️

Wairere Falls

After climbing we hiked to the Wairere Falls. They're 153m high and therefore the highest waterfalls in the North Island.

Mount Maunganui Beach

We went back to Mount Maunganui where we met our friends Lucy, Maïlys and Emma from our Hostel in Wellington. We had a chill beach day with our first swim of the season and Hokey Pokey ice cream 🍦☀️

Reunion in Tauranga

We went to stay with our friends Facu, Mo and Nico who we first met in our hostel in Wellington. We cooked dinner together. Jake and Isi made curry and Hannah and Lina from Cornwall, who were also staying with our friends, made pasties. Afterwards we had a couple of beers around the fire. Rotorua with Friends

Polynesian Spa

As the weather wasn't that great we treated ourselves to a spa day. The Polynesian Spa has geothermal hot pools with temperatures between 38 and 41.5°C. The water comes from two natural springs and contains many different minerals. The slightly acidic Priest Spring is said to relieve tired muscles, aches and pains while the alkaline waters of the Rachel Spring nourish skin.En savoir plus

Girls Day in Taupo

After Rotorua we went to Taupo to stay with our friends Steve and Rachel again.
As Jake had to take the car to get a new WOF (equivalent of TÜV/MOT) Isi spent the day in Taupo with Lucy, Maïlys and Emma. We went to see the Huka Falls, had lunch and walked around Taupo.
After the car passed WOF (yaaay) Jake picked Isi up and we saw the most amazing rainbow on our way back home 🌈En savoir plus

Orakei Korako

Orakei Korako also known as the Hidden Valley is a highly active geothermal area. It is NZ's largest geyser field and it's composed of naturally fault-stepped silica terraces. Some of the terraces are topped with black, green and yellow algae which grow in temperatures between 35 to 49°C. It also includes the thermal Ruatapu Cave which extends more than 35m down to a hot pool named Waiwhakaata (Pool of Mirrors). Kinloch K1

We found this crag in Kinloch just a 20 minute drive from Taupo. It's a small but beautiful riolite wall with just under 20 routes, directly next to Lake Taupo. The routes we climbed were really nice.

Kawakawa Bay

Kawakawa Bay is a well known climbing spot. The hike to the bay took us 1 hour and 45 minutes but it was worth it. We had beautiful weather and enjoyed some good climbing routes.

Napier II

Before heading off to see Isi's work friends we stopped in Napier to walk around the city again. We took a few pictures of some of the beautiful buildings this city has to offer. Napier was destroyed by an earthquake in 1931 and was rebuilt in the style of this era, Art Deco.En savoir plus

Haumoana Beach

After Napier we went to Hastings where we met Jana, Michael and Hanna, Isi's friends from work. We went to the Kiwi Version of Christmas Markets which don't really resemble European Christmas Markets. It was fun anyway as we got to catch up and have a drink together. Afterwards we all went camping at the Haumoana Beach where we had pizza, a fire, marshmallows and drinks.En savoir plus
