  • Seeing Manuel again

    March 18, 2020 in New Zealand ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

We met Manuel in Auckland. We were staying in the same hostel and had some good times together. When we saw on social media that we were both in the same region we immediately decided to meet up again. We went for fish and chips on the beach in Motueka 🐟🍟 and spent a great evening together.Read more

  • Minigolf Christchurch

    March 22, 2020 in New Zealand ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

The day after meeting Manuel we planned on driving to our next travel destination, the Nelson Lakes. Unfortunately the van broke down on our way. We had to be towed and were told that our van isn't worth repairing anymore 😣
We stayed in a hostel in Nelson for two nights and planned our next move. We decided to go to Christchurch and look for a new van. Joe took Isi in his car and Jake hitchhiked. The day after we got to Christchurch we went for a game of minigolf to cheer us up a bit ⛳🏌🏼‍♂️🏌🏼‍♂️🏌🏼‍♀️

  • Christchurch I

    March 22, 2020 in New Zealand ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

We spent the day roaming around Christchurch. We went to see the 185 empty chairs (an unofficial earthquake memorial), the cardboard church, looots of street art, the remembrance bridge, the official Canterbury Earthquake National Memorial, the Christchurch tram and we had an awesome burrito 🌯Read more

  • Kaikoura Beach

    March 23, 2020 in New Zealand ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

After having bought a new van in Christchurch we made our way back to Nelson. On the way we stopped in Kaikoura, and took a walk on the beach where we saw a whale breach (really far away 😂) and lots of seals.Read more

  • Faith In Humanity Restored

    March 24, 2020 in New Zealand ⋅ ⛅ 12 °C

When we were in Christchurch the Government announced that we had 48 hours until the whole country would be in alert level 4 (lockdown). We needed to return to Nelson as our old, broken van was stored in the garden of a nice guy who offered us space to store it. We managed to get to Nelson and we even sold our old van. Our next task was to find a place where we could stay for the lockdown period, which was going to be at least one month. We called a backpacker hostel in Motueka where we got told that we would be able to stay. Upon arrival, however, the owner sent us away again as she had redecided and didn't want us there after all. At this stage we were quite desperate to find a place for the night and the next four weeks. Isi tried to find help in a Nelson Facebook group. To our surprise we got an answer from a flippin awesome couple who took us in for two nights. Lynley and Josh, we'll see you again after lockdown 👋🏻❤Read more

  • The Restore Balance Retreat

    March 26, 2020 in New Zealand ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

During lockdown we wanted to be in the countryside. That's why Isi contacted many hosts on the wwoofing website. Nicky from the Restore Balance Retreat in the Motueka Valley got back to us and said that we could stay at her place for the whole lockdown period. It was really sad to say goodbye to Lynley and Josh but we figured it would be nice to be out of the city on a big property.

All in all we're 10 people here (plus Cora the dog). Nicky, the three of us, 4 Japanese guys (Tomomi, Atsuki, Tatsuki and Kay), Saïda from France and Philipp from Germany. Once a week every couple is cooking for everyone. It's quite fun to cook for everyone but also to eat what different people are cooking.
Four times a week we're getting yoga lessons from Nicky and opposite of the house there's a pretty river where we can relax and go swimming when it's sunny. We're also working a bit on the property to keep us busy during these times.

  • Wwoofing

    March 30, 2020 in New Zealand ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

Until now the work on the property included looking after the 5 chooks and making the chicken coop prettier, weeding in the vegetable garden, picking fruits and vegetables, pruning the tomato plants, chopping firewood, organising the wood shed and making a path in the forest. Saïda and Isi did a lot of baking and preserving fruits and Jake and Joe built a pizza oven 🍕Read more

  • Ross' Hill

    April 2, 2020 in New Zealand ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

For a change of scenery we hiked up a hill right next to Nicky's place. Up top we got a really good view over the Motueka Valley 🌳

  • Motueka River

    April 13, 2020 in New Zealand ⋅ ⛅ 12 °C

We're really lucky to be living directly next to a beatiful river during these times. It's perfect to go for a walk and relax by the river after work.

  • Pizza Party

    April 28, 2020 in New Zealand ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C

It was Nicky's 3 year-anniversary of living on the yoga retreat so we had to have a party. It was the perfect opportunity to finally use the pizza oven Jake and Joe had built. We had a great time eating loads of pizza, talking, drinking and just enyoing ourselves 🍕🥂🍷Read more

  • Mount Arthur

    May 9, 2020 in New Zealand ⋅ ☀️ 11 °C

Together with our bubble we went for a hike in the Kahurangi National Park. We didn't go all the way to the summit of Mount Arthur but got a pretty good view over the National Park anyway.

  • Goodbye Bubble

    May 14, 2020 in New Zealand ⋅ ☀️ 16 °C

Last couple of pictures of our Woodstock Bubble. During the last couple of days Jake and Philipp finished their Trail (T-19) in the forest and Jake helped Isi build a bench in her outside chill area.
It was announced that NZ will go down to alert level 2 on Wednesday the 12th of May at 11.59 pm and that travel around the country will be allowed again. So we decided to leave the Restore Balance Retreat and our bubble.
We had a goodbye party on Wednesday night with a pot luck dinner and cocktails 🍹
Thanks to Nicky, Cora 🐶, Saïda, Philipp, Tomomi, Atsuki, Tatsuki, Kay, Hadrien and Adrien lockdown wasn't all too back. We'll definitely miss those guys. But we're also looking foward to travel again 🚙

  • Lake Rotoiti

    May 16, 2020 in New Zealand ⋅ ☀️ 15 °C

After leaving Woodstock we went to see our friends Lynley and Josh in Nelson because we promised them a curry and games night for helping us out before the lockdown. We stayed two nights. On our second night we had our first takeaway in two months 🐟🍟😍

Afterwards we went to the Nelson Lakes National Park and stopped at Lake Rotoiti where we met our friends Barbara and Marius again. We first met them in Whangarai back in December. It was great to catch up. At the lake we saw ducks, black swans and lots of eels 🦆

    May 17, 2020 in New Zealand ⋅ ☀️ 12 °C

  • Hokitika

  • Hokitika Gorge

    May 18, 2020 in New Zealand ⋅ ☀️ 12 °C

Before walking through the gorge we got chatting to a nice lady. Our original plan was to drive through Arthur's Pass to the east coast but after talking to her we decided to change our plans and travel down the west coast instead.

The Hokitika River is glacier water melt that is mixed with granite sand/dust causing it to have a milky appearance.

  • Franz Josef Glacier

    May 19, 2020 in New Zealand ⋅ ☀️ 8 °C

The ice of Franz Josef Glacier once reached from the mountains right to the sea. Following a gradual retreat the glacier is now only accessible by helicopter. As we didn't want to do a heli-hike (global warming and money reasons) we decided to just walk to the viewpoint. It's still pretty impressive to walk trough a rainforest with waterfalls to see a glacier.Read more

  • Lake Matheson

    May 19, 2020 in New Zealand ⋅ ☀️ 14 °C

Lake Matheson is also called The Mirror Lake and I guess you can see why. We were really lucky to have seen the lake on a clear and windstill day. The two snowy mountains in the pictures are Mount Cook on the right and Mount Tasman on the left.Read more

  • Fox Glacier

    May 19, 2020 in New Zealand ⋅ ☀️ 11 °C

Quick walk to see the Fox Glacier. Couldn't see much of the glacier as it's receded so much (thanks to global warming) and because it's also smaller than the Franz Josef Glacier.
Jake did find a new umbrella though ☂️Read more
