  • Lower Heyford

    September 21, 2017 in England ⋅ 🌙 8 °C

After nearly 40 hours on the road we arrived in Lower Heyford, the starting point for our canal boat trip. We stopped off in Singapore, then to London where we caught the bus to Oxford. We had a quick look around and then caught the train to Lower Heyford. We were absolutely exhausted but managed to keep awake until after dinner at the local pub The Bell. Glad we could finally lie down in a comfy bed! Just a few photos from a whirlwind tour around Oxford.Read more

    September 22, 2017 in England ⋅ ⛅ 12 °C

This morning Mark and I walked to Rousham House and Gardens before we met Mark, Debra and Laura for our canal boat trip. We were given a brief tutorial and then we were on our way! We moored at Aynho wharf and walked at least a mile to the Cartwright Hotel for dinner; a little scary walking back in the dark after dinner. The first and second photos are of Heyford House; we stayed here for the first night in Lower Heyford. The third and fourth photos are Rousham.Read more

  • Banbury

    September 23, 2017 in England ⋅ ⛅ 11 °C

We headed off this morning; Mark D steering and the rest of the crew mastering the locks and raising bridges. Beautiful countryside and moving at a very leisurely pace. We moored the boat and ventured into Banbury; remember the nursery rhyme? Anyway, we finally found a decent pub for lunch, the Old Reindeer Inn; Debra and I enjoying half pints. We bought pasties on the way home for dinner on the boat.Read more

    September 24, 2017 in England ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

A beautiful day to be on the canal. Making our way home, so moored at Upper Heyford and enjoyed our last night on the boat with dinner at the Barley Mow. (Just realised there aren't many photos if Mark D!)Read more

  • Oxford

    September 25, 2017 in England ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

Just a short trip on the boat from Upper to Lower Heyford; we were due back at the wharf by 9am. The weather was miserable, so we were glad we were no longer on the boat. We all left by train for Oxford. Mark and I enjoyed a tour of the Bodleian Library before catching the train to Paddington. (Apologies for the selfie!)Read more

  • London

    September 25, 2017 in England ⋅ 🌙 14 °C

We are staying in Chelsea for the first time and enjoying the shops, houses etc. Shopped at Waitrose including for dinner. Lovely to climb into a big bed after 3 nights on the boat!

  • London

    September 26, 2017 in England ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

Feeling refreshed after a good night's sleep, we walked to Kensington Palace. I went to the Diana exhibition and Mark had a wander around the gardens. No sign of the royals; however, I do believe we spotted Lupo! (The Cambridge's dog). Mark then treated us to afternoon tea at the Orangery; not quite up to The Goring. Home for a rest and then off to The Builders Arms for drinks and dinner with our nephew Antony. Apologies if the photos are skewed; we are still feeling as if we are on a boat.:(Read more

    September 27, 2017 in England ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

Today we headed off to The Oval for the ODI between England and the West Indies. The Brits sure know how to cater at sporting events. We once again enjoyed Pimms, fish and chips, ales and more! Weather was perfect until about 7.30pm when the heavens opened.Read more

    September 28, 2017 in Germany ⋅ ☀️ 18 °C

Once again we had lovely weather for our last day in London. We decided to take a walk around Chelsea and chanced upon the home of Thomas and Jane Carlyle. The house is set up as it was in the mid nineteenth century. We then spent a couple of hours at the Physic Garden; including a wonderful lunch, tour and then afternoon tea. Walking round Chelsea is certainly checking out how the other half live! In the evening, we headed into central London to watch The Toxic Avenger; great show.Read more

  • Buhl

    September 29, 2017 in Germany ⋅ 🌙 16 °C

Today we left London and it was wet and miserable. We flew Easy jet to Stuttgart, the plane was full of loud Poms wearing lederhosen; not a pretty sight. We had a long drive to Tubingen due to road works. Met Liz and John and all the English rellies for dinner. Looking forward to the wedding tomorrow. 🤗Read more

  • Tubingen

    September 30, 2017 in Germany ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

So today was the big day. We had beautiful weather to start with, but by late afternoon the rain started. The day started with a short but steep walk up to The Wurmlinger chapel for the wedding ceremony; Joanna looked lovely in Liz's old wedding dress. Following the ceremony, we made our way down the hill to enjoy cake and coffee. We also released many heart shaped balloons which had been the theme on the invitations. We then set off on our walk to Tubingen through the forest; stopping for champagne on the way. We then convened at the Museum Restaurant for the reception. A long, but very special day.Read more

    October 1, 2017 in Germany ⋅ ⛅ 12 °C

A quiet day today following the celebrations of yesterday. The UK and Australian contingent met at 12pm in the central square of Tubingen before making their way to a bier garten fir a late lunch. Mark and I returned to our accommodation in Buhl for a late afternoon rest. We have been spending way too much time eating and drinking!Read more

  • Friederichshafen

    October 2, 2017 in Germany ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

Today we left Tubingen/Buhl and headed towards Lake Constance. We were once again reacquainted with the maniacal European drivers! We spent the afternoon at the Zeppelin museum before heading to our bed and breakfast called die Villa. You can see the Zeppelin flying near the church spire. Mark and I walked to the top of the tower which was rather wobbly up the top. Dinner was a take away salad from the supermarket eaten in our room. Weather not looking good for tomorrow so not sure if we will end up on the lake. The first photo is of our hostess in Buhl and her beautiful dog Lassie; we were very well looked after for three nights, 😍Read more

    October 3, 2017 in Germany ⋅ 🌧 10 °C

The weather this morning was pretty awful; however, it cleared up by midday. We set off for Meersburg in the car and then took the ferry to Mainau Island; beautiful gardens. (It made Floriade look very amateurish). Mark and I are now officially oldies as we have visited a number of gardens on this trip. We then came back to Meersburg and drove to Lindau the last German town before Austria. This was a very pretty town on the lake when we enjoyed our al fresco dinner.Read more

  • Kelheim

    October 4, 2017 in Germany ⋅ ⛅ 10 °C

We left Friederichshafen today for Kelheim. The first two photos are of die Villa and the winderful breakfast. Mark and I are not enjoying the driving/navigating in Germany. The roads are just not built for the number of cars/trucks etc. that are using the roads. We will both be glad to get back to the UK and public transport! Anyway, we made it to Kelheim late this afteroom and walked up a steep hill to a monument commemorating something or other; I will fill in the details later. We then adjourned for dinner at a Vietnamese/Sushi restaurant; no more noodles for me. Oh, we also stopped off at the Audi museum in Ingolstadt; how could I forget.Read more

  • Bayreuth

    October 5, 2017 in Germany ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

We left Kelheim yesterday morning, but not before we took a short boat ride to the Weltenberg Kloster about 6 kms upstream. We were joined by busloads of tourists from the Avalon company; lots of Americans. We then headed to Bayreuth where Mark's half sister lives. However, we had to make a stop at HMB-Guzzi on the way. 🤔
We spent an interesting evening with Irene and Alfred; they don't speak English and we don't speak German! They took us to a lovely restaurant for dinner. Mark forgot his camera so will add photos of Irene and Alfred later.

This morning we had breakfast with Alfred and Irene before heading back to Stuttgart airport. The weather was extremely wet and windy; we were glad to be heading home. We were delayed getting away from Stuttgart and then had to fly above Heathrow for an extra 20 minutes or so. Thankfully, we were staying at an airport hotel so didn't have to travel far. Heading to Bristol tomorrow to catch up with Nicholas. (Alfred and Irene are the couple on the left in the second photo). We stayed in a lovely place called Villa Friedrich.Read more

    October 7, 2017 in England ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

This morning we had a and dash from our hotel to the Heathrow bus station; we only had 3 minutes to spare! We are staying in a very nice basement flat in Bristol. The owner lives above and has made the place very comfortable. Nicholas picked us up around lunchtime and we went to watch the rugby; I even got the boots on! We have just returned from a fantastic Italian restaurant; great food and vibe.Read more

Nicholas had training today so we kept ourselves amused. We walked down to the harbour and had a good look around the SS Great Britain; well worth a visit if you head to Bristol. We then went on a short boat trip before heading to a lovely little pub called the Pump House; the crew on the boat recommended it. We then came home for a well earned rest before heading over to see Nicholas and Efia for pizza. We felt very sad saying goodbye to them both.Read more

    October 10, 2017 in England ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

So our last day of our trip; we have thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Just wish we could have stayed in Bristol longer. We spent our last few hours checking out the Museum, art gallery, climbing a tower and enjoying lunch in a little cafe in Clifton. Our host Vanessa has been lovely; I have included a picture of her with their cat Delphinium Guy Fawkes or Guido for short. On the bus for Heathrow at 3pm for the flight home. 😢Read more
