    Kearny state recreation area.

    June 26, 2016 in the United States ⋅ 🌙 23 °C

Today we saw or first beaver. It was so cool to share this with Alyson. So many of our trips have been us showing her our favorite places. This time we experienced it as a family.
Otherwise this was a pretty terrible day. We left two days late thanks to the truck being repaired (broken valve spring). We got the truck yesterday, but it was to late to leave. We woke at 4 am, left at 5:20 and then drove for 16 hours for almost 900 miles. We cannot get the fridge to run on gas, but we will carry on. After that day, it was wonderful to stop here to swarms of fireflies and then to see a beaver was crazy.Read more

  • Second day's drive

    June 27, 2016 in the United States ⋅ 🌙 17 °C

We woke a little late, but did do on purpose. We had pancakes for breakfast. We wanted to feel like we were camping.
We drove through Nebraska. When we left the Platte valley, the scenery changed. I finally felt like I was on vacation. The hills were really neat looking. The drive felt long today, I guess we were still tired of being in the truck. As we neared Badlands, the road became really rough. We arrived at Custer state park around dinner and decided not to go anywhere else.Read more

  • Crazy roads, crazy trail.

    June 28, 2016 in the United States ⋅ 🌧 19 °C

Today had a forecast for thunderstorms. We started the day on Iron Mountain Road. It was built so that the one lane tunnels aim at views of Mount Rushmore. After that, we saw the deadheads and Alyson earned her Jr ranger badge.
As we left, thunderstorms were moving in. We drove west towards Needles Highway. It was so narrow that we could reach out of the truck to touch trees. We stopped at Sylvan Lake. We hiked around the lake and did the first bit of Sunday Gulch trail. We may return tomorrow if weather permits. We had to return to the campground to move the camper to the next spot.

  • Sunday Gulch

    June 29, 2016 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

This trail is nuts. Marcella and Alyson both fell on the slippery rocks. It sprinkled right after we started walking, making the rocks really bad. After we reached the bottom, it poured on us going up. The lightening strikes were uncomfortably close. All or legs are exhausted, but the trail was only 2.8 miles.Read more

  • After the hike

    June 29, 2016 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

We were tiered and beat up after the hike. We went to Custer to eat pizza and shop.
We found a great pizza place. The pizza was called "ranch" and was almost like a salad on bread. It was amazing.
We then walked and shopped for the rest of the day. We bought a little piece of art fur the camper that says "have fun."Read more

  • drive day

    June 30, 2016 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

Today is a day to do the bulk of the drive to Glacier National Park.
We didn't really want a boring day, so we decided to add Devil's Tower to the day. We expected it to add 2 hours, but it really added more like 3. Alyson wanted to do the Jr Ranger program. It was cool, but made us late for the drive. After the tower, we drive like crazy. The road was not easy, even though it was interstate. We arrived at the campground after dark. The campground was in the national forest, miles up a windy road. After we arrived, the signs were poor. I made a wrong turn. When I realized the issue, I walked to find the real campground road, just a bit further down the hill. In the process of trying to around, he campground host told us how to get turned around, but it was down a deeply potholed road. I should not try to park that late at night again.Read more

  • waterfall, then another drive

    July 1, 2016 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

We woke to a beautiful day, high in the Absaroka Mountains (thanks to yesterday's nighttime escapades). I walked around the campground. It was much easier to understand in the light, but the signs were still bad.
I found the trailhead to pine creek falls. We are breakfast and did that hike. After the hike we had a 6 hour drive. It was miserable. It was full of continuous hills, curves, and crazy drivers. We arrived in Coram, Montana totally spent. We set up the camper in a really right spot at Sundance Campground. I think I like the place, but it is different than other places we have gone. It is a small place. The sites are close together, but the people are great. It is certainly not a parking lot. They don't have sewer, but they will empty your tanks for 10 bucks.

  • 1st day in Glacier

    July 2, 2016 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

We woke and drove to the park,
    Crowded.
That's what we saw. I suppose it was no worse than RMNP on the weekend before the 4th of July, but we know where to go to avoid crowds in Rocky. We saw beautiful scenery, but parking was nearly impossible. We drove the length of Going To The Sun Road. We then drove Many Glacier. Parking was nearly impossible at all locations. We won't try again tomorrow. Perhaps after the weekend we will go back up to see if it is better.Read more

  • avoid people

    July 3, 2016 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

Today we woke with the intention of avoiding the crowds. As we entered the park, the line of cars stretched beyond the signage about the entrance station. The rangers were not really checking the passes. Ours could have been out of date, they would not have noticed. We turned toward the North Fork area and drove to Polebridge. We saw few cars. We stopped to pick huckleberries, them went to the bakery. The food was crazy good, but I got a headache immediately. I have felt it trying to cone for two days. We drove back to camp. Marcella gave me meds, massaged the place in my neck, I went to sleep. I woke up feeling much better, with Alyson and Marcella doing laundry.Read more

  • try again

    July 4, 2016 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

We decided to go back to the park, but follow our camp host's advice. We drove in VERY early. We were in the parking lot for avalanche lake at about 7:30. Parking was easy. The hike was listed at 4 miles, but was actually more like 5. The lake was crazy pretty. After the hike, we went to Sprague Creek picnic area and meet some Native People's doing a church picnic. We saw a grandmother beading a traditional outfit for a powwow. After that we hiked the Johns Lake/ McDonald Falls trail at 3 miles. Tires from all the walking, we ate at Eddie's. The food was amazing!Read more

  • rest day?

    July 5, 2016 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

Today we planned to rest from all the walking yesterday. We saw putt putt in town, Adobe other games, and a ropes course.
We went to the ropes place first and spent 4 hours there. We all played, but Alyson and Bret spent the most time on the ropes. We were exhausted when we left.Read more

  • Highline/Loop Trail

    July 7, 2016 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

I am so beat up after this day. This was the main trail I wanted to do here.It just opened for the season yesterday. We are still tired, but going for it. 11.8 miles of high elevation hiking with amazing views. On the way in the park, we saw a black bear. On the trail, we saw Bighorn, mountain goat, ground squirrels, and marmot. The views were not too good in the morning, but opened up later when the sun came up.Read more

  • Grand Teton

    July 9, 2016 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

We did a one day stop so Alyson could get her junior ranger badge for the Tetons. It was a glorious day. Often the Tetons are hiding in clouds. Today was not one of those days. We got her badge, learned a little, had a picnic, the got groceries and came back to camp.Read more
