• Rock of Gibraltar

    19 Mayıs, Cebelitarık ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C

Walked to the rock and jumped in with a guide who took us up to the top- sensational views of Gibraltar, Spain and Morocco. The 2 pillars - one in Morocco and one in Gibraltar- called the Pillars of Hercules, in ancient times were thought to be the end of the earth ( back when they thought the earth was square) and if you passed the pillars you fell off the earth!
Went to St Michaels Cave , which ancient Greeks believed was the temple to Hercules. You can see the form of an Angel which is spectacular!
We then went up to the top of the rock, which is now inhabited by monkeys. They are by no means tame and apparently 3 different tribes populate the island and have their own domains- often killing each other over territory- one picked up a brick while we were there and threw it at an elderly couple!
The highlight of our trip so far was the WW2 tunnels - very emotional and absolutely mind blowing- the sheer size of them dug into rock .It really emphasises the importance Gibraltar had as a stronghold in the war. A must do on any bucket list for sure.
